Patrick's Cathedral today as a solemn high requiem mass was celebrated for Col. Jacob Ruppert, multi aire brewer of the world champion New York Yankees. Colonel Ruppert died Friday at his home, 1120 5th Manhattan, at the age of 71 after a long illness. Traffic Is Diverted The funeral was one of the largest ever held in St. Patrick's.

The cathedral was filled to its capacity of 4,200 persons and 10,000 more were massed in the surrounding streets. Traffic was diverted from 5th Ave. and from 50th and 51st between 5th and Madison Aves. The Ruppert brewery and all i its branches were closed today, and flags flew at half-staff on all breweries throughout the country in memory of the colonel. Burial was private in the family mausoleum in Kensico Cemetery. Paul V.O'Halloran, English Professor Paul Vincent O'Halloran, formerly an instructor of English at St. John's University, suddenly last night at his home, Stuyvesant died, of a heart attack. He was 31.

Mr. O'Halloran had been professor of English at Seton Hall College in South Orange, N. since 1937. He previously had been at St. John's University for about a year.

He was educated at St. John's Academy, St. John's Prep and St. John's University, where he received his A. B.

degree in 1931. He received an M.A. degree from New York University in 1933 and was to have received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in June. Mr.

O' Halloran is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary O'Halloran. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed. Vreeland, 57, of Prospect Park West, secretary of the National Sugar Refining Company of New Jersey and an officer and director of a number of other corporations, died today in Polyclinic Hospital, Manhattan. Mr. Vreeland was a protege of the late James H. Post, former president of the sugar company and noted Brooklyn, personal philanthropist. attorney He and was had been an intimate friend of the financier for 40 years.

Mr. Vreeland started his career as an office boy in the old Brooklyn firm of B. H. Howell, Son where he met Mr. Post, who started his career with the same firm.

Mr. Post advised him to become a lawyer and he was admitted to the bar about 1907. He went with the National Sugar Refining Company as the firm's counsel. Mr. Vreeland was a witness to the will of Mr.

Post. Held. Other Vreeland Executive also was Posts secretary of the Chapara Light Power Company, the Chaparra Railroad Company, the Colonial Sugars Company, the Cuban-American Sngar Company and the New Niquero Sugar Company and was president of the eD Mau Realty Company, the Landsmith Realty Company, the South Eleventh Street Warehouse Corporation and the Vreeland Ord Realty Company. He was a native of Brooklyn and is survived by his widow, Fannie Sutherland Vreeland; two children, Walter J. Vreeland Jr.

Childs Dies; Son of Senator Succeeded His Father, Founder of Floral Park, As Executive of Firm Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Floral Park, Jan. 16-Vernon Goldsmith Childs, eldest son of the late State Senator John Lewis Childs, eminent horticulturist and founder of Floral Park, and Mrs. Caroline Goldsmith Childs. died suddenly here last night his home, 91 Tulip Ave.

Born in the old Childs Homestead here, Mr. Childs had lived here all of his life. He was educated in the Floral Park schools, St. Paul's School in Garden City, and Pennsylvania State College. Later he was associated with his father, and upon the latter's death in March, 1921, became vice president of John Lewis Childs, here.

When his mother died in July, 1937, he became president of the concern. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Clarice Hunt Childs: a son, John Lewis Childs 2d; a sister, Mrs. Norma Childs Schwieters, who is the wife of John Francis Schwieters, prominent Manhattan attorney, and a brother, J. Lionel Childs.
