R. Gibson Continued from Page 5 test public reactions by building four model homes and ottering them for sale.

That the pre-con-cieved notion of public resistance was a fallacy was soon proved. Three of the four models were sold before completion, and construction immediately started on another group. Since then, 54 homes, known as the Nantucket models, have been built by the Oibson Corporation; and of these, 48 have been sold to date. "The cellar-less house as developed by Mr. Oibson provides an excavation 'vlth a head room of 1 feet 4 Inches, sufficient to allow for adequate ventilation.

It is provided with an entrance from the outside, so that heating and plumbing lines underneath the first floor may be easily accessible for inspection and checking. Built with a poured concrete foundation, the floor of the excavation is also finished with cement and thus provides the normal storage facilities that any family- might need. The automatic heating plant, equipped with oil burner and laundry tubs, are now installed in a wing of the house, slightly below the level of the first floor. Located usually to the rear of the kitchen, the exterior roof line of this wing adds depth to the appearance of the house and Improves the architectural design. In this connection, It is interesting to note that one of these Nantucket models received the 1940 architectural award for excellence of design and soundness of construction from the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects." 2-3-31: -Jr.
