St. OPEN SUNDAYS. Air Con. AL. 4-1414 ington." It had its premiere last night, sponsored by the National Press Club here -where some of its scenes were shot, but even more Important than this, is the fact that Capra 's film has capt ured the hustle-bustle atmosphere of ihis town and recreated the tension of politics-at-work that one can feel Immediately he sets foot on Pennsylvania Ave.

It Is a tension that is Washington's own and one that Is not easily imagined by those who haven't personally experienced it. And most of the New York reviewers, strangely enough, had not. Columbia lost no time in supplying a remedy, providing novel hour in the Senate (although, taxpayers note, only a dosen Senators were operating), a reception where politics (not movies, for change) was the main topic of discussion among reviewers and a dinner with Senators and Representatives, rather than producers and directors, as the guests of honor to supply shop talk of Capitol Hill rather than a San Fernando Valley and Hollywood Boulevard. It set up a real-life background with which to compare the setting that Capra has recorded on celluloid. That he has succeeded in reproducing an authentic Washington is probably no surprise to those who appreciated the Capra realism in "It Happened One Night," "Broadway Bill" and "You Can't Take It With You." How much more he has woven into "Mr.

Smith Goes to Washington" must await the Music Hall opening tomorrow. While his film was still in the formative stages before a set had been built or a camera turned Capra set forth succinctly his objective for his newest film: "I can only hope," he said, "that 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington' may intensify and confirm a prideful consciousness of what being an Amer vOn Your Toes" Due This Week jean Arthur Cast in New Screen Comedy Zorina, dancing star of "I Married an Angel," recent Broadway musical hit, heads the cast of the New York Strand Theater's coming attraction, "On Your Toes," which will open there next Friday. Comedy is the main theme of the production, with even the twinkling toes of the lis some Zorina directed to that end. Supporting her is a large cast of comedians, headed by Eddie Albert and including Frank McHugh, Alan Hale, James Gleason, Leonid Kin- skey, Gloria Dickson, Queenie Smith and Erik Rhodes.

George Balan- chine directed the dance sequences and Ray Enright directed the rest of the picture. The "in person" show at the Strand will feature Hal Kemp and his Time to Shine Radio Revue, featuring The Smoothies, Nan Wynn and Bob Allen. Jean Arthur, Fred MacMurray and Melvyn Douglas will play starring roles in a gay comedy romance, based on the Somerset Maugham stage success entitled "Too Many Husbands," which will shortly be placed in production by Columbia, The picture will be directed by Wes ley Ruggles and will be this director's first picture under his new contract with the company. Claude Binyon is preparing the screen play. Miss Arthur recently completed the starring role in Columbia's Frank Capra production, "Mr.

Smith Goes to Washington," which is scheduled to open at the Radio City Music Hall this week. That is Mr. Smith. When Mr. Smith arrived in Columbia's "Washington," he found all of the details of the town the buildings, the Senate chamber, the authentic tone that Mr. Capra himself assembled in his usual painstaking manner, on his research tour of the nation's capital.

He found sets that were built from photographs the producer had shot, and he found an exact duplicate of the Senate Chamber peopled with 96 feature players and extras chosen to conform physically to tne composite picture of a model United States Senator 52 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weight, 174 pounds, according to Columbia's statistics. Ordinarily we would award little extra credit for such accuracy in motion picture reproduction. More often than not, it is destroyed by haphazard story construction that never really Justifies th -trouble it involves. With Capra the case is different: the precision of his Wash ington sets mirrors the deu Derate care he has taken in recreating the idealism of Mr. Smith, the selfishness of conniving politicians and the earnestness of those who are Strugs gling to make democracy function properly.

Just as he has fashioned a duplicate of the Senate, Mr. Capra has created a strine of authentic personalities who can be recognized for what they are. xney are tne result of Capra's penchant for detail. They live and breathe and they are real and significant. You can find their prototypes scattered around town; arid you can applaud, for once, the hours that Hollywood spends on research.
