The happiness of their home was the subject of a story in The Eagle on May 12, 1935, after one of Mrs. Devlin's sons wrote to The Eagle and suggested her as an inspiration for "Mother's Day." Dr. Frank -vid Torrey, for many years pastor of Methodist Episcopal churches in Brooklyn, N. and Hempstead, L. died here yesterday in the Deaconess Hospital following a long Illness. He was in his 69th year.

Dr. Torrey, a former member of ths board of trustees and the board of stewards of the New York East Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, held the pastorate of the old Summerfield Church In Brooklyn is! ri Funeral services for Howland Wood (above), curator of the museum of the American Numismatic Society, who died yesterday of pneumonia in his home, 137-17 Franklin Flushing, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in St. George's P. Church, Flushing. Mr. Wood was an authority on Oriental and Mohammedan coinage. He had served as editor of the American Journal of Numismatics and of Numismatic Notes and Monographs. Mrs.

E. Andrews, Hospital Worker Mrs. Edythe Walden Andrews, long active In the work of the Flushing Hospital, died of heart disease yesterday in her home, 44-35 Kls-sena Boulevard, Flushing. She was 76. Mrs.

Andrews was the wife of Charles Lee Andrews, special representative of the stock brokerage firm of De Coppett Doremus in Manhattan. He was vice president of the board of trustees of the Flushing Hospital for many years. Born In Brooklyn, Mrs. Andrews was the daughter of Daniel Tread-well Walden, a well-known Brooklyn attorney, and Caroline Amelia Williams Walden. She had resided in Flushing 41 years.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Richard Snowden Andrews of Manhasset and Lt. Com. Charles Lee Andrews U. S. now stationed on the Pacific Coast; a daughter, Mrs.

Caroline Thurber, wife of Lt. Com. Raymond Thurber, U. S. four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for the family only will be held at thq home Friday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Hubert S. Wood of St. George's P.

E. Church, Flushing, will officiate. Burial will be in Flushing Cemetery. James B. Harrison plumber, died yesterday at his home, 91-38 114th Richmond Hill, after an illness of three months.

He was a member of St. Andrew's M. E. Church of Brooklyn. Surviving are his widow, Mrs.

Margaret E. Harrison; a son, William James Harrison; two daughters, Mrs. Madelon Sheldon and Mrs. Wesley Obcrt; a brother, Joseph, and five grandchildren. Services will be held tonight at 8 o'clock at the home.

Former Fascist Retired Barber Followed Mussolini in Blackslrirt Army March on Rome Carmine Tirone, who was a mem ber of the army of blackshirts who followed Benito Mussolini, in the fascist leader's famous march to Rome, died yesterday in Kings Coun ty Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Tirone, who was 71, lived at 39 Orient with his son, Philip Tirone, Republican leader of the Italian forces in the eastern district and clerk of the central Jury of the Municipal Court. He was a retired barber. Mr.

Tirone was born In Avelllno, Italy, and came to this country in 1888, settling in Greenpoint. He returned to his native land during the World War and saw service in the intelligence bureau of the Italian army. Knew Mussolini After the war Mr. Tirone became active in the formation of the Fascist party and knew Mussolini inti mately. After Mussolini's rise to power he returned to the United States.

He was an American citizen. He was active in political and social circles. He is survived by two sons, Philip Tirone and Joseph Tirone, who lives in Columbus, Ohio. The funeral will be held from the Ballas Funeral Parlors, 660 Grand with a requiem mass at 10 a.m Saturday at St. Francis of Paola R.

Van Alst, Republican co-leader of the 1st A. D. in Queens and formerly county co-leader with Joseph H. De Bragga, died of a heart attack last night at her home, 30-05 31st Astoria. She was 58.

Mrs. Van Alst, who was active in Republican affairs for many years in Queens, had been for the last 18 years an auditor in the Manhattan office of the State Motor Vehicle Bureau. During the World War she was a leader in relief work, serving as manager of the World War Camp Community, which had headquarters in Long Island City and which housed several thousand transient soldiers over an extended period. Mrs. Van Alst was the widow of Peter G.

Van Alst. She was born in Brooklyn and was a member of the 1st A. D. Republican Club and Li-land "City Chapter, O. E.

Wittmer. Martha DeMott Oceansidc, Jan. 5 Miss Martha DeMott, a daughter of the late Simuel DeMott, prominent South Shore attorney, died yesterday after an illness of several months. She resided with her sister, Mrs. Seabury, at 15 Waverly here.

Miss DeMott was born in Rockville Centre. Her mother was the late Drusilla Cornell DeMott. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Sea-bury and Mrs. Susan Carmen, of Modesto, Cal.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Pettit Brothers Chapel, in Rockville Centre, with the Rev. Carl V. Moore Interment will be in Greenfield Cemetery. John J.

Maloney John J. Maloney of 121 Quincy St. died yesterday at his home after a long illness. He was born in Dutchess County. N.

67 years ago and had lived in Brooklyn for the last 17 years. He formerly lived in the 4th Ward in Manhattan and was retired from active business. He was the husband of the late Mary Hagerty Maloney and Is survived by a daughter. Mrs. Catherine Lyons; a sister, Mrs.

Elizabeth Walsh, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be held Friday, with a requiem mass at 9:30 a.m. at the R. C. Church of the Nativity.

Kane of 556 61st superintendent of delivery for the American News Company for 32 years, who died Sunday. Mr. Kane was a member of the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers' Union and is survived by his widow, Irene Carsten Kane; a daughter, Irene; a sister, Mrs. Mary Moffett, and a brother, Peter Kane. Scheer Services Set for Tonight Funeral services will be held tonight at 8 o'clock for Joseph Scheer, night Borough Superintendent in Queens for the Department of Sani tation, who died Sunday of heart disease while driving his automobile.

He was 53. The services will be conducted at the Scheer home, 62-86 Forest Ridgewood. Burial will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Evergreens Cemetery. Born In Brooklyn, Mr.

Scheer had been a resident of Queens for 30 years. He Joined the Department of Sanitation 27 years ago as a sweeper, and advanced by promotion to the post he held at his death. Active in Civil Service Mr. Scheer was treasurer of the Queens County Civil Service Employes Benevolent Society, and a member of Ethan Allen Council 6, Jr. O.

U. A. the Anawanda Democratic Club and the Classified Employes Association of his department. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lena Scheer; three daughters, Mrs.

Anna Seyfried, Mrs. Amelia Zimmer and Mrs. Martin Meinert; three sons, Charles, Joseph Jr. and Andrew Scheer; four brothers and two sisters. One brother, Anton Scheer, Is a district superintendent in Brooklyn for the Department of Sanitation; another, William O.

Scheer, is a re tired policeman and two others, Charles and Otto Scheer, are clerks in the Brooklyn Post Office. Two of the sons, Charles and Jo seph also are employed in the postal service. The sisters are Mrs. Louise Hauser and Mrs. Emma Zimmer.

J. Dexter Crowell Funeral services for J. Dexter Crowell, admiralty lawyer and former resident of Brooklyn, were to be held tills afternoon in the Fair-child Chapel, 86 Lefferts Place. He died Monday at the age of 53 in the Hotel Brittany, Manhattan. A native of Brooklyn, he received his education at Amherst College and New York Law School.

He be gan his law career with the former firm of Wheeler, Cortis and Haight, of which he became a partner, and in 1919 organized the firm of Crow ell Rouse at 111 Broadway, Man hattan. He maintained homes in Nut ley, N. and Bellport. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Helen Paddock Crowell; a daughter, Miss Helen Dexter Crowell; his mother, Mrs.

Edward P. Crowell, and two sisters, the Misses Florence and Ethel Crowell. Mrs. J. Gillespie Mrs.

Jane McGonigle Gillespie, 76, who formerly lived and was well known In the Sheepsliead Bay section, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Stubenbord, at 704 E. 22d where she had resided for the past 15 years. Mrs. Gillespie's former home was at Emmons and Bedford Aves.

Surviving, in addition to Mrs. Stubenbord, are a son, Lester Gillespie; two Mrs. Charles B. Hagerty and Mrs. James Conahan; a brother.

he completed his public school course at Public School 11 In Brooklyn in 1882. He worked for a time in a New York broker's office and then entered Syracuse University, being graduated in 1891. Preached in Then he entered the Northern New York Conference and preached four years at the Dreyer Memorial Church, Utlca. He studied in Boston and Drew Theological Seminaries, receiving his d'vlnity degree from the latter institution in 1897. He also received an M.A.

degree from New York University. Obtaining a fellowship from Drew Theological Seminary, he studied at the Universities of Leipsic and Berlin in 1597 and 1898. While a student at Drew he preached for a time at Elm-hurst, N. Y. After filling pastorates at Fulton and Little Falls, N.

he was transferred to the New York East Conference in 1904 to fill a vacancy caused by the death of the pastor at New Milford, Conn. In 1906 he went to Norwalk, and after six years was called to the Brooklyn church. Invited Here Unanimously Dr. Torrey went to the Summer-field Church with the unanimous in-vltaion of the congregation, succeeding the Rev. Lynn Harold Hough, transferred to the Mount Vernon Church of Baltimore.

He received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Syracuse in 1913. He was a member of the trustees and stewards boards of the New York East Conference up to his resignation in 1929. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. May Brown Torrey; a daughter, Mrs. Hervey B.

Elkins, and a sister, Miss S. E.
