EAGLE MAGAZINE OF FEATURES Some Quaint Notions A Why the Discovery of Vitamins and ISle Knowledge of Nutrition 'Brings a ISew Conception of Health bout let By Dr. William Brady THERE ARE TIMES when a fellow sighs for the good old days of leg shows I mean Congress boots with elastic in the sides and he-man razors that kept an edge through score of shaves and unadulterated 'buckwheat pancakes yeast-lightened and your choice of suspenders or necktie free with every suit. But I get awfully tired of telling people it doesn't make any difference whether the meat is white or dark. Still I wouldn't mind that so much if it were not for the endless stream of inquiries about foods that cause acidosis. It is of little avail to tell 'em there are no foods that cause acidosis, for they come right back to ask what foods prevent acidosis then.

That nettles me, and I have to take a minute out and roll a half dozen somersaults to keep any blood pressure down. Then I brush aide the whole danged argument and inform the wiseacres there is no such state a acidosis, except as a consequence of certain grave illnesses. Then there are the folk who have been biting on the food specialists' bait I believe their number is decreasing as enlightenment slowly permeate the popular mind and who seek assurance that the protein lri their bread or beans will not react disastrously with the starch thereof to produce some horrible poison in the stomach. It seems the food faddists have discovered that the Creator was a little careless when He ordained that these incompatible food materials should grow combined so intimately in the staff of life. and prolonging life.

It is no longer enough that an individual should be able to carry on without crutch, tonic, sedative, doctor, brace, stimulant, regulator or treatment. He should feel "fit as a fiddle." have a superabundance of vitality or "pep," the resiliency of youthful vigor, in short, the happiness which is health plus. Not make-believe vivacity, but genuine joie de vivre. An optimal ration of vitamins appears to be the key to this better-than-average health. To that end, no matter what your present state of health may be, it can do you no harm and may do you a world of good to see to it that your daily diet includes rather more than the amounts of the different vitamins which are essential to prevent definite deficiency diseases.

For the intelligent layman who wishes to learn more about vitamins and nutrition there are a few books which I can recommend: "The Foundations of Nutrition," by Prof. Mary Swartz Rose, revised edition. 1933, MacMillan Company, New York. "Food, Nutrition and Health," by Mc-Collum and Simmonds, published by the authors. Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene, Baltimore.

Others think of health as a state of comparative freedom from or alleviation of the symptoms of minor ailments to which they have long been subject.

Even amongst the minority who are well how rare to find one whose health is perfect or who can get better than 90 percent rating on a health test. When you inquire politely about health your well friend usually replies "fair" or "pretty good for me" or "I'm not complaining." Should he claim to enjoy better than average health, you set him down at once as a crank on the subject, unless your own education is better than average too I believe the discovery of vitamins and the growth of our knowledge of nutrition as a result of the discovery, has contributed much toward a new conception of health, in both the medical and the lay mind. Perhaps this paragraph from Sherman's Chemistry of Food and Nutrition" iMac-Millam, 4th edition, 1933. P. 400, relating to vitamin G.

will illustrate what I mean: "A nutritional condition as manifested in a reduction of death-rates, better growth and develop ment, an extension of the prime of life in both directions, and a material improvement of the life expectation of the adult, with a higher average level of positive health throughout the life cycle has been shown to result from an increase in the proportion of milk in an already adequate diet. In chemical terms, the diet was here enriched in several factors; calcium and vitamins A and to a notable extent; and to a lesser extent some of the nutritionally essential amino acids. (Even the increased proportion of luctose may conceivably have played a part in influencing favorably intestinal hygiene. i The continuation of the investigation to determine, if passible, to what extent each of these Chemical factors participated fn the improvement, is still in progress; but results already obtained seem to indicate that calcium and vitamin are among the chief factors which thus functioned in bettering an already normal condition of nutrition." (F COURSE we can't think of calcium (lime) in metabolism or nutrition without thinking of Vitamin ultraviolet energy from sunlight and the action of the hormones or internal secretions, particularly parathyroid. But I wish to emphasize the last line in the paragraph quoted "bettering an already normal condition of nutrition." That expresses the new conception of health.

Neither our newer knowledge of nutrition nor ur changing conception of health implies that the older ideas, methods of practices were wrong.
