DR. WALTER R. PROUTY DIES; OPTOMETRIST, LAY PREACHER Dr. Walter R. Prouty, 64, Brooklyn optometrist, with offices in the Albee building, died Saturday afternoon at his home, 107-34 Richmond Hill, after a brief illness.

Dr. Prouty, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Lewis Prouty, was born and educated in the old Eastern District, now Williamsburg. June 25, 1877.

A member of St. John's Methodist Episcopal Church and Sunday School, he became interested in church work. In 1915 he became a member of Goodsell Memorial Methodis Church, city line, which he served during the years As Sunday school teacher and superintendent, trustee, steward and lay leader. For over 20 years he was a local preacher of the Methodist Church, preaching in many Brooklyn and Long Island churches and serving his own church as acting pastor during the Summer months each year. He was a vice president of the Local Preachers Association of W.

Stafford. a member of the staff of P. S. 104 for the last 30 years, and husband of Nora O'D. Stafford, principal of P.

S. 192, died today at his home, 6919 Ridge Boulevard, following a long illness. He was 64. Mr. Stafford taught in the Brooklyn public schools for 43 years and prior to that had been engaged in newspaper work, writing Catholic news for the Brooklyn Eagle and the old Standard Union, Active in Civic Affairs He took an active interest in legislative a and civic affairs affecting teachers and was the founder of the 9th A.

D. Teachers Club. He was president of the club since it was founded ten years ago and also was a member of the Bay Ridge Chamber of Commerce and a charter member and first treasurer of Loretto Council, K. of C. He formerly was a member of the old Bay Ridge Civic Council.

Mr. Stafford born in Manhathat and was educated at St. Peter's College, Jersey City, and St. Francis College here. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Joan and Regina; a son, Leo, and a brother, William F.

Stafford. The funeral will be held Wednesday with a solemn requiem mass at 10 a.m. in the R. C. Church of Our Lady of Angels, 4th Ave.

Fettes well known Bay Ridge physician and surgeon who was secretary of the medical board of the Madison Park Hospital, died yesterday after a bref illness. He lived at 1595 E. 13th St. and had practiced in Brooklyn for the last 35 years. Dr.

Fettes was born in Montrose, Scotland, and received his medical training at the Long Island College Hospital from which he was graduated in 1907. He was assistant surgeon at Cumberland Hospital and during the first World War served as a major in the United States Army. Services Tonight For Thos. S. Rice Funeral services for Thomas S.

Rice, 63, criminologist and formerly a member of the sports staff of the Brooklyn Eagle, will be held at 7:30 o'clock tonight at the New York and Brooklyn Funeral Home, 187 S. Oxford St. Burial will be private. Mr. Rice died Saturday at his home, 138 Montague St.

He was a member of the Eagle staff from 1911 until 1929, writing of crime and legal topics, as well as about baseball. Dr. Prouty organized many young people's orchestras in Brooklyn churches, and played himself in the Shriner's band. He was a past master of Tyrian Lodge, 618, F. A. a past patron of Tyrian de Chapter, O.

E. and a member of Orient Chapter, R. A. M. A former secretary of the New York State Optometrist Society, he gave much time to the interests of that group.

In 1923 Dr. Prouty married Mrs. Nellie May Wahlen, who survives him. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. James Lewis Prouty, now in her 97th year, and sister, Mrs.

Carrie Prouty Sweet, both of Larchmont, and a brother, Almond Prouty of Hempstead. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Goodsell Memoral Methodist Church, McKinley and Sheridan by the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Ralph Welles Keeler.

The body will repose until 3 p.m. at the Cornell Funeral Chapel, 1210 Liberty Ave. ory School District from the time of its formation in 1912 until his retirement last August. He served for 40 years in the Nassau County -system, and the new high school Bellmore, Mepham High School, was named in his honor. A native of Ontario, N.

Mr. Mepham was educated at the Geneseo State Normal School. Before he was elected to superintendent, he had been principal of the Smithville School. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Harriet M.

Mepham; a daughter, Mrs. F. Wilbert Edgar, also of this place; a brother, Walter J. Mepham, and a sister, Mrs. William Moyle.

With the War Production Board restricting the use of tin as the protective coating on the inner side of metal food containers, research was set going to produce a substitute. As a result, it was learned, equipment is being installed in many can manufacturing plants to process the thin steel plates of which "tin cans" are made so that a film of lacquer applied to "frozen serfaces" will replace the coating of tin. Berry, former mayor of the old City of Williamsburg. She also was a direct descendant of Capt. John Berry, Deputy Governor of New Jersey in 1672. Surviving are a brother, George Berry; a sister, Mrs. Eugene E.

Merwin D. Maier, Ace Bridge Player Merwin D. Maier. a member of the famous bridge team, the Four Aces, and regarded as one of the most brilliant tournament contract bridge players in the country, died yesterday after an illness of two months at his home, 61 W. 9th Manhattan.

He was 33. Mr. Maier was a member of the team which won the Vanderbilt Cup tournament last year in which the Four Aces compiled the largest score of the season. He also was successful as an individual player. In 1940 he was placed as third in Shepard Barclay's ranking of the ten best bridge players of the year.

She returned to this city eight months ago. She was the daughter of the late Col. Charles C. Suydam, who served with the Union forces in the Civil War, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving, in addition to Admiral Halsey and Mrs.

Bigley, whose husband is executive director of the Brooklyn Chapter, American Red Cross, are three other sisters. Mrs: Edward A. Weeks and Miss Emily Suydam. both of Elizabeth, and Mrs. Raymond Stone, wife of Commander Stone, U.

S. of Annapolis. William R. Rust, 60, Jamaica Attorney William R. Rust of 148-27 87th Jamaica, an attorney and real estate law specialist, died suddenly on Saturday.

He was 60. A native of Brooklyn, he was the son of Charles and Joseph Rust and was graduated from New York Law School in 1906. He was a member of the firm of Earle. Rust Reilly of 15 William Manhattan. Mr.

Rust was long active in phil-. anthropic and religious work in Brooklyn and Queens. He was an elder and treasurer of Christ Evangelical Reformed Church on St. and president of the Ottilie. Orphan Asylum Society.

He formerly was president of the Evan-. gelical Home for the Aged. He vas a founder and a member of the board of directors of the Citizens Bank of Brooklyn and be: longed to the Brooklyn Bar Association. Surviving are his widow, Alice, F. Rust, and five daughters, Alice, Madeline Normile, Edna, Margaret and Helen.
