Pat O'Brien is equal to all that is asked of him and more. He is asked to seem stupid about the girl and his brother. But Pat O'Brien is a good actor, capable of an admirable realism.

John Payne does well enough as his brother, while the two girls. Gale Page and Ann Sheridan, have a hard time achieving anything like consistency. Frank McHugh helps on the comic side. Julie Stevens, Pasadena Playhouse I actress who recently signed a contract with Warner will make her screen debut ln a featured role in "20.000 Years in Sing Sing." John Garfield. Ann Sheridan and Burgess i Meredith head the cast of the pic-1 ture, which is now ln production under the direction of Anatole Litvak. Leon G. Turrou, former "ace G-man who was Instrumental ln the expose of a Nasi spy ring in this country last year, is sailing for New York today from Europe, according to a cable received yesterday. The star Investigator went abroad early in June to attend the London and Paris premieres of "Confessions of a Nazi Spy," the Warner Bros, screen drama starring Edward G.

Robinson. The Billy Conn-Melio Bettina championship fight pictures have been added to the current programs at RKO Greater New York, Westchester and New Jersey theaters. The production of "Swanee River" has taken on added importance at the 20th Century-Fox studios with the announcement by Producer Darryl Zanuck that the picture will be filmed in Technicolor. The picture will combine the histories of E. P.

Christie, the minstrel troubadour, and Stephen Foster, and will contain many of Foster's Immortal melodies. Don Ameche will have the role of Foster, Al Jolson will play Christie and Nancy Kelly has been assigned the leading feminine role. The picture will be directed by Sidney Lanfield. Marc Connelly, Pulitzer prize winning playwright, has reported to Paramount to begin work on a screen version of Joseph Conrad's story, "Victory." "Victory" has as Its locale the romantic islands of the Java sea. Connelly won the Pulitzer prize for his dramatization of "Creen Pastures," which he later adapted for the screen.

Tom Neal and Virginia Grey have been added to the cast of "Another Thin Man," the new William Powell-Myrna Loy co-starring vehicle which will soon go Into production at the M-G-M studios under direction of W. S. Van Dyke 2d. Hunt Stromberg is producer, and the cast Includes C. Aubrey Smith, Ruth Hussey, Horace MacMahon, Patrick Knowles and Harry Bellaver.

M.G.M. has purchased "A Call On The President," a short story by Damon Runyon. June Preisser and Mary Beth Hughes have been added to the cast of "Dancing Co-Ed" at the M. G. M.

studios. Ihe Aldrich family is to be perpetuated on the screen. Deeply im pressed with audience reaction at sneak previews of the Jackie Cooper-Betty Field co-starring picture, "What A Life," Paramount officials have placed on the studio production schedule two additional films which will deal with further adventures of the Aldrlchs. Clifford Goldsmith, author of the original stage play "What A Life," which Is ln its second year on Broadway, has been signed by Paramount to write the first of the two new Aldrich screen stories. The two films, as yet untitled, probably will star young Cooper and Miss Field and are to be directed by Theodore Reed who made "What A Life."
