Pratt Succumbs at 62 Was Managing Partner In Banking House-Father Founded Institute Here Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Glen Cove, May 22-Harold Irving Pratt, 62, managing partner of the banking house of Charles Pratt 26 Broadway, Manhattan, and son of Charles Pratt, a founder of the original Standard Oil Company and of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, died of pneumonia yesterday 'at Welwyn, his Summer home on the Pratt estate here. With Mr. Pratt when he died after an illness of less than a week was his wife, Mrs.

Harriet Barnes Pratt, who is president of Hortus, organization that had charge of the floral planting and landscaping at the World's Fair. Also at Welwyn were his son, H. Irving Pratt Jr. and Mrs. Pratt; his daughters, Mrs.

James Ramsey Hunt Jr. of Glen Cove and Mrs. David R. Wilmerding of Berwyn, husbands; brothers, Herbert Lee Pratt and Frederic ails B. Pratt, and his sister-in-law, Mrs.

Ruth Baker Pratt, former Represen- tative in Congress from Manhattan. PRATT INSTITUTE TREASURER Born in Brooklyn on Feb. 1, 1877, Mr. Pratt had many interests in the borough. He was treasurer and a trustee of Pratt Institute, and a trustee of the Brooklyn Trust Company and the Brooklyn Savings as well as a director of the American Express Company, the New York, New Haven Hartford and the New York, Ontario Western Railroads; treasurer and director of the Morris Building Company; chairman of the board of the North American Reassurance Company and president and director of the Self Winding Clock Company.

Mr. Pratt and his wife widely known for their civic activities and as horticulturists, and for their many philanthropies. Mr. Pratt was president of the North Country Community Hospital here and a trustee a and former president of Brooklyn Hospital, and was a substantial benefactor of both institution tions. During the World War Mr.

Pratt aided the work of the Young Men's Christian Association, the American Red Cross, the Brooklyn branch of the Belgian Relief Fund and other charities. Mr. Pratt's city home was at 58 E. 68th Manhattan. When he gave up his Brooklyn residence in 1918 the occasion was marked by a gift of $20,000 to the Brooklyn Bureau of Charities, which was termed by the Eagle at the "the first considerable gift of the kind by a Brooklynite on his departure from the borough." His benefactions to Glen Cove were numerous.

They included many acres of land on which the City Hall, the Post Office and other public buildings were erected, and the 12-acre tract occupied by Harriet Barnes Pratt Park, named after his wife. The gardens of the Pratt estate, which has a wide frontage on Long Island Sound and has been occupied by four generations, have been ranked has the Garden Club of America among the finest in the world. Mr. Pratt was a vestryman of the Episcopal Church of St. John's of Lattingtown at Locust Valley and a member of the New York Yacht Club, the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, the Century, Racquet and Tennis, Rock, Nassau Country, Links, Brook and Piping, Greek clubs and the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. in St. John's of Lattingtown Church. Burial will be in the family mausoleum on the Pratt estate. The surviving relatives include a sister, Mrs.

K. Rhinelander, Of Colonial Family Served as Secretary In Realty Organization Founded by Relatives Funeral services are being arranged today for Philip Kip Rhinelander, 42, a member of the noted Colonial New York family, who was found dead at 4 p.m. yesterday in his bed in a room he rented two months ago at 137 E. 71st Manhattan. The cause of his death was ascribed to a cardiac condition.

Mr. Rhinelander was living at the E. 71st St. house since his wife, the Miss Helen G. Alexander, formers two daughters, the Misses Phyllis M.

and Helen M. Rhinelander, went to Bermuda for a vacatwo months ago. He formerly lived at 1220 Park Manhattan. Mr. Rhinelander, who was secretary of the Rhinelander Real Estate Company of Manhattan, was a descendant of a Huguenot family which came here from Oberwesel on the Rhine after the Edict of Nantes and settled in New Rochelle in 1686.

His grandfather, who owned much real estate in New York, was William Rhinelander, and his grandmother was the former Miss Matilda Cruger Oakley, daughter of Thomas Jackson Oakley, a noted New York jurist. His father was Col. Philip Rhinelander, and his mother was the former Miss Adelaide Kip, daughter of the late Isaac Leonard Kip. After his graduation from Harvard in 1918, Mr. Rhinelander enlisted in the 107th Infantry of the New York National Guard and saw service at Spartanburg, S.

and in France. Since the war he had been connected with the Rhinelander Real Estate Company. Mr. Rhinelander was the brother of the late Leonard Kip Rhinelander. His sister, Mrs.

Adelaide Thomas, lives at 995 5th Manhattan. Owen A. Gaffney, County Employe Owen A. Gaffney, Supervisor of Records of of Kings and a county employe for about 32 years, died last night at his home, 43 Howard Place, after an illness of about two weeks. Born in St.

Mary Star of the Sea parish in downtown Brooklyn, Mr. Gatiney, there. attended He served the in the parochial Register's County Clerk's offices here before going to the Commissioner of Records' office more than 20 years ago. Geismar A. H. Geismar Former Justice Prominent Jewish Philanthropist Only Five Months Continued from Page 1 Dies, Retired Ago before he came to Brooklyn in 1892 to become rabbi of Temple Israel, the predecessor of Union Temple. During the six years he served in that capacity he studied at Columpia University and the New York Law Schooi and was admitted to the bar in 1898. He was appointed a City Magistrate in 1906 and remained on the bench until 1922, when he resigned to become First Assistant District Attorney.

In 1926 he was elected on the Democratic tickel to the iCty Court bench and was re-elected 10 years later with bi- partisan support. Y. M. H. A.

DIRECTOR Justice Geismar formerly was a director the Brooklyn Y. M. H. A. and in 1912 was elected to the presidency of that organization.

He also served for number of years as a director of the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities and in 1916 organized the Young Men's and Young Women's Social Service Auxiliary of the Federation, serving also as its first president. In 1917 he was appointed an officer in the Home Defense League of the City of New York with the rank of major. He also was the local vice chairman of the Red Cross and Liberty Loan campaigns. He served as chairman of the campaign to raise $500,000 for the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities in 1918 and the following two years was chairman of the campaign for combined war relief of the organization. ACTIVITIES CURTAILED Due to the heart condition from which he suffered, Justice Geismar had given up many of his charitable activities devoting his time to his work as an official referee.

Surviving are his widow, Pearl; two daughters, Mrs. A. N. Rosen and Mrs. Irving Levitt, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Union Temple, 17 Eastern Parkway, by the Dr. Sidney Tedesche. The death of Justice Geismar was mourned today in City Court, where a memorial service was held in Special Term, Part 1, after which each of the court's five justices conducted brief ceremonies in his own courtroom. At the general service the speakers included Justice Joseph V.

Gallagher, former City Court Justice Charles E. Russell, the only surviving official referee of the court, and Assistant Corporation Counsel Joseph Hirt. All of the justices attended. In addition to Justice Gallagher they were Justices Jacob H. Livingston, Louis Goldstein, ter Sabbatino and Murray Hearn.

Supreme Court Justice Francis G. Hooley, a next-door neighbor of the Doyles, was among the persons called in. YOUNGEST IN CLASS OF 1902 Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Doyle was a son of the late Daniel Doyle, for many years treasurer of Brooklyn Lodge 22, B. P.

O. E. He was graduated from Manhattan College, having the class been of the 1902 and youngest a classmate of Democratic Leader John Thorp of Nassau County. For a time Mr. Doyle practiced jaw with the late John J.

Kean of Brooklyn, becoming affiliated with the lighting company upon the death of Mr. Kean. He was a life member of the Crescent Athletic Club of Brooklyn and was chairman of the board of directors when the club purchased its property in Huntington. Surviving, in addition to his widow and daughter, are his mother, Mrs. Anne J.

Ryan, a customs official for 41 years, who died Saturday night in the Yonkers General Hospital after a short illness. He was 67 and lived at 34-20 74th Jackson Heights. Mr. Ryan entered the customs service as an inspector in 1898 and served under 12 consecutive Collectors of the Port of New York. During that period he was inspector, station inspector, and, at his death, a deputy surveyor under Harry T.

Foley, surveyor of customs. He was in charge of the examination of incoming passengers' baggage. Survivors are his widow. Mrs. Margaret Ryan; a son, Martin C.

Payne, Noted Psychologist Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Andover, N. May 22-Dr. Arthur Frank Payne, 62, well-known psychologist and radio lecturer, who died Saturday at his home here after an illness of several weeks, will be buried tomorrow at Wallingford, Conn. Dr. Payne was personnel director of the College of the City of New York from 1929 to 1937, and had previously taught at Harvard, Columbia, Chicago and California universities.

He also had served as consulting psychologist of the United States Veterans Bureau and during the World War was a director of surveys for the War Department and executive secretary of the Military Training Commission of New York. Edward Bena Services for Edward Bena. a forcontractor, of 233 23d who died Friday after a long illness, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday with a solemn requiem mass in the R. C.

Church of Our Lady of Czenstochova, 24th St. and 4th Ave. Mr. Bena was born in Poland and lived in this country for the last 50 years. He was a member of the Polish Democratic Club and was active in social circles.
