Mrs. Valerie L. Hardina. BROOKLYN EAGLE, THURSDAY, AUG. 12, 1943 MUSIC OF THE DAY 4 SOCIETY Hewlett Garden Scene Yesterday Of Low-Murray Bridal; Other News Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Final Stadium Concert of Season Boasts Three Soloists, All of the Philharmonic Something of a family party for members of the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra rounded out the 26th season of Summer concerts at Lewisohn Stadium last night.

First of all, there was Weldon Wilbur, first horn player, who was 5 Hewlett, Aug. 12 A marriage of particular interest to Long Island socialites yesterday a captain in the Nassau County uiapter or tne American Red Cross, and Lt. Francis Hine Low, U. S. N.

The cere 5 0 "'jfcmmi soloist in nis own arrangement of Handel's "Concerto Piccolo." Then John Corigliano, the concert master, and Zoltan Kurthy, first violist, teamed up for Mozart's Concertante for Violin and Viola. It was all very pleasant for a fair sized audience, but lt hardly added up to a grand finale even though Beethoven's Fifth Symphony was the final number. Mr. Wilbur left no uncertainty concerning his merits as a horn player. He was excellent.

The Handel gave him every opportunity to display a facile technique, especially in rapid passages, and a mastery of playing softly. He got the applause of the evening. Mr. Corigliano and Mr. Kurthy played well, but the tone of their Instruments was unfortunately distorted by the amplification, thus robbing them of the effects of their musicianship.

It was a particular pleasure to hear Mr. Corigliano phrase his music so tastefully and convey a degree of vitality that is always refreshing. He promises to be most interesting when the regular Carnegie Hall concerts are re sumed in the Fall. Alexander Smallens conducted his VI Weds U. ttooeri nyna i Mr.

Miles Kaitenditck 25th performance for the season with that competence expected of him. His program began with Cherubinl's Overture to "Anacreon" and included what was noted as a first performance of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's "American Rhapsody." Perhaps lt was a first hearing for this score, but it all sounded so familiar and so ordinary that its brevity was its chief asset. The audience was markedly unimpressed. It is reported that over 300,000 persons attended the Stadium Concerts during the season. They came in large groups or in startlmgly small numbers, suggesting that a restudy of the whole Stadium policy may be in order for another year.

Eleven conductors were too many, and the special nights bore too much the stamp of repetition. It was opera that caught the fancy this Summer. Perhaps this popularity should be cultivated. Only four concerts of the eight-week season were postponed because of rain, so it wasn't the weather that was responsible for the poor attendance on nights when the programs were strictly orchestral. That development is one of the most interesting sidelights of the season.
