BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE, NEW YORK, SUNDAY, MAY 23, 1937 Organizations Plan Their Annual Celebrations News of Greek Letter Clubs News of Women's Clubs Athena Club Mrs. Andrew Bates Carrington, recently taking office as president of the Athena Club, announced her committee and department heads at 14th annual luncheon of the club this past week at the Lido Country Club. Her appointments are Mrs. John W. Dodd, literature; Mrs.

R. I. Deniston, music; Mrs. C. Oliver Moore, art; Mrs.

Gilbert Flint, drama; Mrs. Newton H. Emmons, civic; Mrs. Frederick Jansen, motion picture: Mrs. Roy Gockley, chairman of the newly created American home department; Mrs.

Edwin D. Philbrick, garden; Mrs. Henry Pemberton, bulletin; Mrs. Cornelius Van Rees, membership; Mrs. Amelie S.

Hannam, hospitality; Mrs. David Sutherland, hostesses; Mrs. George V. Fleckenstein, press, and Mrs. Elizabeth Baylis, historian.

The newly acting slate of officers includes also Mrs. Dodd and Mrs. Homer L. Bartlett, vice presidents; Mrs. Edward Licence, recording secretary; Mrs.

Robert Fillmore, corresponding secretary, and Mrs. Robert B. Paterson, treasurer. Mrs. Low is entertaining the members of her past two years executive board at a garden party at her home June 21.

Tomorrow the garden department. under the retiring chairman, Mrs. William A. Becker, has arranged its annual garden pilgrimage too view the gardens of Mrs. Roger Donodo at East Hampton.

On Thursday the drama deunder the direction of partment, will present "Pink and Patches" at the annual drama contest of the State Federation of Club in the Great Neck Women's Clubhouse in that town. Freeport Clubs A tea, and cake sale has been arranged by the Women's Church Improvement Society, Mrs. Frederick Jansen president, at the church house on June 15, with Mrs. Theodore Vought as general chairman. On June 23 the society will have a Summer luncheon.

Mrs. Raymond Austin will be hostess at "her home Thursday afternoon at a lawn party for the benefit of the Seaman Ave. School P. T. A.

The association will hold its annual meeting Tuesday in the school. A garden party June 11 at the home of the rector, the Rev. Reginald Scott and Mrs. Scott, has been arranged by the Ladies Guild of the P. E.

Church of the Transfiguration. The Business Women of Freeport will hold a luncheon meeting at Canary Cottage Thursday. Mrs. George Braithwaite, president, will conduct the session. A card party will be held in connection with a meeting of the January-February-March group of the Ladies Aid Society of Christ Lutheran Church June 8 at the home of Mrs.

Harold Dunlap. A meeting of the Freeport Unit of the Home Bureau is set for Tuesday afternoon in the Columbus Ave. School. Election of officers will take place. The nominating committee 1s headed by Mrs.

Frances Cleary. Mrs. Morris Leibowitz has been re-elected as president of the Sisterhood of Temple B'nai Israel. Other officers chosen to serve are Mrs. Benjamin Goldman, vice president; Mrs.

Jerome Asch, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Arthur Coan, recording secretary, and Mrs. Hyman Schloss, treasurer. Mrs. Robert Dennett has been elected president of the Chopin Club, succeeding Mrs.

Carl Tewksbury. Mrs. Norman Rangel has been chosen secretary treasurer. The club will hold a picnic on June The monthly meeting of the Freeport Auxiliary to the South Nassau Communities Hospital will be held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Cornelius Van Rees.

Mrs. Henry Sutter, president of the unit, will conduct the business session. Tea will be served under the chairmanship of Mrs. Arthur Ray. The group has announced a fashion show and tea at the South Shore Yacht Club Wednesday afternoon, June 3.

Junior League The Gertrude Glassberg Junior League of Brooklyn Bikur Cholim has elected as new officers: President, Sidney Schneider; vice president, Lester Levine; secretaries, Joseph Sherman and Miss Shirley Glassberg, and treasurer, Elsie S. Gertzman. Miss Gertzman. also of the entertainment committee, is in charge of arrangements for the club's last social event before the Summer vacation, a boat ride up the Hudson River on June 20. (Herbert photo.) Garden City Clubs The annual meeting of the Woman's Club of Garden City was held on Monday afternoon in the Garden City Casino. Following the business session and "the election and installation of officers, Elise West Quaife reviewed "The Nile" by Emil Ludwig. At the tea hour Mrs.

Charles Dura Thomas was chairman of hospitality. The new officers are Mrs. Walter T. Loebmann, president; Mrs. Luer L.

Wiltbank, first vice president; Mrs. James H. Wilson, second vice president; William R. Snyder, recording secretary; Mrs. Walter T.

Fitzgerald, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Lester F. Corwith, treasurer; Mrs. historian; Mrs. Albert, M.

Hopper, auditor; Edward M. "Biggs, director. Other directors are Mrs. William F. Englis and Mrs.

Andrew H. Boardman. On Friday afternoon the club's Morning Choral, Mrs. V. H.

Cairns chairman, sponsored a musicale and tea at the home of Mrs. Royal Toner of Oxford Boulevard. William Aubin, baritone, was the guest artist. Mrs. John H.

Mearrs is the vice chairman and Mrs. Louis H. Dutton the conductor. The five gardens of Community Club were thrown open on Tuesday under the direction of the club's garden department, for club members and guests. The gardens were those of Mrs.

William C. Meissner, Mrs. Charles M. DeLand, Mrs. John B.

Wolff, Miss Hicks and Mrs. Henry F. Herrmann. Tea was served at the home of Mrs. Hermann with Mrs.

Frank Barnes and her hospitality committee in charge. Organization of the new committees to conduct affairs of the Community Club for the coming year is yprogressing rapidly. Mrs. Lynde will head the music department, called a meeting at her Locust St. home en Monday.

J. L. Hubley were among the local delegates attending the Long Island Federation of Women's Clubs' annual meeting at the Hotel Pennsylvania on Friday. Mrs. George Hubbell, Mrs.

Arthur G. Decatur and Mrs. Robert H. Wyld left Thursday to attend the Needlework Guild convention in Philadelphia. They be house guests of Mrs.

Hubbell's daughter, Mrs. Philip Lord, in Chestnut Hill. The women's committee of Garden City Beach Club met at the home of Mrs. Martin H. Schrenkeisen of 3d St.

on Monday The Cathedral Guild met at the home of Mrs. Charles M. DeLand of 3d St. on Wednesday to install the new officers for the coming year. They are Mrs.

Alexander Alexander, treasurer; Mrs. Arthur G. Decatur, secretary. The Garden City Branch of the Church Charity Foundation held its meeting and luncheon at the home of Mrs. Lillian S.

Kay of Roxbury Road on Thursday. Mrs. Divine F. Burtis is Ladies' Day at the Cherry Valley Club this week was "open day" with 100 members and guests participating in the golf events 150 attending the luncheon and bridge. The golf winners were, in Class Mrs.

Edward C. Richmond and her guest, Mrs. Wandly; in Class David Ferguson and her guest, Mrs. Peck. The high score at bridge was that of Mrs.

Edward M. Cameron Jr. Miss Beatrice Bogert was hostess of the day at the Tuesday gathering of the Woman's Golf Club of the Garden City Country Club. Mrs. Valentine Gottschling was the winner at bridge and Mrs.

Wilton Courtney Donn was awarded the hostess' prize. Mrs. Harry Wykes Whitehill of Wellington Road was a luncheon hostess to the Tuesday Music Club of Brooklyn this wee About 25 guests were at the luncheon and later there were additional guests for the program. The Junior Auxiliary of the Garden City League for Mercy Hospital held its last work meeting of the season at the home of Mrs. Walter Oxford Boulevard, on Tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon at the Garden City Casino, the auxillary will give a tea at which time there will be tryouts for models to take part in the league's fashion show on June 7. Women's Civic League The Women's Civic League of Brooklyn, Helen M. Fowler president will hold its final meeting tomorrow night at the Towers Hotel. In accordance with the program of being informed on work of Brooklyn departments of the City of New York, the league will have as guest speaker Dr. William E.

Best of the Department of Health. The junior auxiliary, composed of students of Girls Commercial, held its final meeting Thursday. Miss Belle Cohn is president. The girls will be conducted trough Ellis Island Friday, June 18. North Shore Clubs At the annual meeting of the Manhasset School Community Association held this week the following were elected to office: President, Mrs.

Grenville Anderson; vice president, Mrs. Arligh Van' Nostrand; recording secretary, Mrs. Helen Collard; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Herbert Fleer, and treasurer, Mrs. Charles Weigold.

At the re recent annual election of the Parent-Teacher Council of the Great Neck High School the following were elected to he hold office for the coming year: President, Dugal Campbell; vice president, Mrs. Heman Crystal; treasurer, Mrs. Barrett Herrick, and secretary, Mrs. Hubert Phillips. The P.T.A.

of the Roslyn School met this week, at which time the installation of officers was held. Those installed for the coming year were: President, Mrs. Sarah Marshall; vice president. Mrs. G.

B. Paull; recording secretary, Mrs. Halstead Rushmore; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Albert Monestal, and treasurer. Mrs.

Fred Rothwell. An address on "The Home and the World" was given by Dr. William Doughty. Dr. Henry Kleinschmidt of Munsey Park and director of public health training for the New York City Department of Health.

George Rapp was chairman of the committee for the food sale held today sponsored by the Rectors Guild of Christ Church of Manhasset. The last meeting of the season of the North Riding Chapter of the D. A. R. was held this week, at which time annual reports were presented and officers were elected for the coming season.

Those elected were: Regent, Mrs. Willis Dodge, first vice regent, Mrs. Burt Van Siclen; second vice regent, Mrs. Charles Laflin: corresponding secretary, Mrs. David Byrne: recording secretary.

Mrs. Fred Neuman, and treasurer, Mrs. Robert Cummings. The Smith College Club of Long Island held its annual luncheon and meeting at the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club this week. Mrs.

O. V. Hawkins of Flower Hill was hostess at the meeting this week of the literary group of the Plandome Women's Club. Dr. Charles Ronayne was guest speaker.

The Plandome Women's Club held its annual president day's luncheon at the North Hempstead Country Club, Port Washington. Mrs. John Mange of Plandome Road will hold office for the coming season. Speakers Club The Speakers Club of Brooklyn held its annual meeting Tuesday at Standish Arms Hotel. All officers were unanimously re-elected.

The election was preceded by dinner. Officers present were Miss Elizabeth Reilly, president; Dr. Anna de la Motte, first vice president; Miss Mary D. Connor, second vice president; Mrs. Amelia C.

Lewis, treasBechtold, corresponding secretary; Miss Alice M. Lapidge, recording secretary. Other were Mrs. Lawrence Mrs. Sammembers, attending, uel H.

Liddle, Miss Regina Wright, Mrs. Lucy Refter and Miss Ann M. Hull. Mrs. George C.

Wigle was a guest. Miss Regina Wright acted as chairman of program. The general topic for the evening was "Some Interesting Experience." The next regular meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 19. The Women's Auxiliary of Boys of the Y.

M. C. A. Bedford Branch had a luncheon at the closing meeting at the Little Cottage last week. Miss Dorothy M.

Doyle, daughter of Mrs. Charles J. Doyle of 301 Sterling will be married Francis G. Murray of 68 Rutland Rd. on July 3.

Floral Park-Bellerose Clubs The Floral Park-Bellerose P. T. A. Choral will present its Spring concert tomorrow night at the school under the direction of Francis Reyman. Miss Eudora Miller, music chairman, is in charge.

Court Our Lady of Victory, C. D. of Stewart Manor will hold a social and card party tomorrow night at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Mrs. Catherine O'Flaherty is regent.

The Sisterhood of the Floral Park Jewish Center will hold a strawberry festival Tuesday night. Mrs. C. Innis Brown is chairman for the dinner for graduates to be sponsored by the Floral Park-Bellerose School P. T.

A. Thursday night. Ruth Becker was elected president of the little women's department of the Bellerose Women's Club this week. Others elected were Miss Janet Bushen, first vice president; Miss Margaret Fletcher, second vice president; Miss Eleanor Williams, secretary, and Miss Marianne Wickel, treasurer. The sub-deb department elected Miss Dorothy Cronin as its president.

Serving with her during the coming year will be Miss Ruth Wessmann, vice president; Miss Constance Williams, recording secretary; Miss Lynn Wilbur corresponding secretary, and Miss Virginia Brewster, treasurer. Baldwin Clubs The Baldwin Auxiliary to the South Nassau Communities Hospital, Mrs. Alexander G. Welsh president, has set June 23 as the date for its annual garden party and bridge on the lawn of the home of Mrs. Uriah Boch.

An outdoor meeting at Belmont Lake State Park has been arranged for the next meeting on June 11. A slate of officers headed by Mrs. C. Merton Wilson, wife of the pastor, as president has been placed in nomination the Mothers Club of All Saints E. Church.

Election pay will be held at the next meeting on June 7 when Mrs. William Celler will entertain the members at a picnic at her Summer Home at Fort Salonga. The nominated slate includes also Mrs. Walter R. Moyse, vice president; Mrs.

A. Tuesday evening at the Lindner Place School. Plans will be made for the dinner which the association will give the Malverne High School seniors on June 5. Mrs. Howard Flaherty is chairman.

A card party will be given Tuesday evening by the Altar Society of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in the church hall. H. Guerin, of Lynbrook. The ceremony will be performed the chapel of the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush by the Rev. Dr. J.

Frederic Berg, pastor of the church, and will be followed by a reception at the Hotel Bossert. Miss Norma Biddle will be Miss Johnson's only attendant. Rollin Tenney, will be best man, William Weeks and Robert Shoelle will be ushers. Miss Johnson is a graduate of Packer Collegiate Institute and Mount Holyoke College. Mr.

Guerin attended Cornell University and 1s member. of Beta Theta Pi fraa ternity. The couple will make their home in Brooklyn. DIRECTORS MEET Mrs. Josephine Alexander was hostess to the board of directors of the Women's Division the Brooklyn Jewish Home for Convalescents, Mrs.

William W. Chamow, president, at the Capitol Club on Monday. A luncheon and bridge, as the closing event of the season, at Villepigues, on Wednesday, June 16, is planned. The annual Fall bazar will be on Nov. 15 and 16 at the Plaza Caterers.

CLASS MEETING Miss Rita Smith of 442 82d St. recently held a meeting of the class of '35 at the Academy of St. Francis Xavier at her home. Plans for the first annual bridge to be held at Chaplin's Restaurant on Friday evening, June 4, were discussed. Miss Smith will be chairman.

Joseph's L. 1. City. (Loeser Greek Letter Clubs CHI PHI TAU At the regular meeting of Chi Phi Sorority of Long Island University Miss M. Ethel Grady of Brooklyn was elected president and Miss Marjorie L.

Bedell of May Shore was elected secretary-treasurer. Plans for the year were discussed. OMEGA SIGMA CHI Omega Sigma Chi met at the home of the Misses Natalie and Laura Borokhovich, 1391 E. 29th last Sunday. Plans for the moonlight sail to be held on June 12 were discussed.

ALPHA KAPPA TAU A meeting of the Alpha Kappa Tau Sorority was held recently at the home of the president, Miss Frances Carroll, 157 Willoughby Ave. Plans were discussed for a boat ride to be held in June. The next meeting will be held at the home of the Misses Catherine and Dorothy Bertrand of 170 E. 19th St. PI DELTA PHI Alpha Gamma Chapter of Pi Delta Phi sorority gave a mothers and daughters luncheon at" the Towers Hotel recently.

The president, Miss Aston, announced as officers: Miss Margery Schmidt, president; Mrs. Herbert Cordes, vice president; Mrs. Thomas Kelly secretary; Mrs. William Martin, treasurer, and Miss Elizabeth Schaefer, historian. THETA RHO CHI Alpha chapter of Theta Rho Chi Sorority met at the home of Miss Belle Moore and planned a dinner and theater party on June 12.

ALPHA TAU PHI A meeting of Gamma chapter of Alpha Tau Phi Sorority was held last week at the home of Miss Jane Kurtan, 817 21st St. sorority will divide two chapters. One group will meet tomorrow at Miss Kay Grogan's, 23 Hubbard Place, to elect officers. A joint meeting will be held at Miss Grace Hubbard's. Roosevelt Clubs A meeting of the Ladies Aid Society of the M.

E. Church will be held in the church hall Tuesday, June 1. Mrs. Freda Braune succeeds Mrs. June Bernsley as president of the Mothers Club of St.

Paul's P. E. Mission. Others elected are Mrs. J.

Arthur Canley, vice-president; Mrs. Royal Richensteen, treasurer, and Mrs. Amos Denton, secretary. Mrs. George Robert Lewis, wife of the rector, is director of the club.

A bingo party at the parish house on Thursday afternoon, June 3, has been arranged. Peace and Freedom League Mrs. Bertram Whitman was reelected to the praesidium of the Far Rockaway Chapter of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and Mrs. Alexander Tendier and Mrs. Jack Sipa at the annual meeting at the Far Rockaway Public Library, Mrs.

Friedman and Mrs. Keshin were named honorary officers. Others chosen were Mrs. Armand Brunswick, Mrs. Cecil B.

Ruskay and Mrs. Maxwell Brown, vice presidents; Mrs. Arthur Brenner, social secretary and publicity chairman; Mrs. Helen Vogel, recording secretary, and Mrs. Harry Konikoff, treasurer.

Yesterday the league sponsored its annual May peace party. Mrs. Jacob Friedman was chairman. The organization's annual garden party will be held on Wednesday, June 17, on the grounds of the home of Dr. and Mrs.

Vlachos of Woodside. ALPHA DELTA CHI Alpha Delta Chi sorority of St. John's University will hold their formal initiation on Tuesday, at the home Miss Sonya Munter, 416 Ocean at a cocktail party. The sorority will welcome the new menbers as guests at the annual dinner to be given later in the evening at Little's Restaurant. SIGMA LAMBDA NU Gamma chapter of Sigma Lambda Nu national fraternity met recently at the home of Arthur Barone, 160 77th St.

On June 19 they will have a sport hop with Rho Sigma Phi Sorority at thine Beekman Tower, Manhattan. grand chapter banquet and dance will be May 29 at the Hotel St. George. The semiannual meeting will be held at the St. George May 30.

The next meeting will be held Tuesday at Victor Viken's, 469 64th St. Bar Ass'n Luncheon Members of the Brooklyn Women's Bar Association gave a luncheon in honor of Miss Minnie R. Schwartz, retiring president of the association, yesterday afternoon in the Tower Room of the Hotel St. George.

Miss Schwartz, who has been president of the Brooklyn association for the past four years, will be succeeded by Miss Ruth Warters, Assistant Attorney General of New York State. DETTMER-WELCH Miss Grace Virginia Dettmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Henry Dettmer of 715 E. 22d will be married on Sunday, June 13, to Frederick Earl Welch, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Robert Joseph Welch, also of Madison Place. The ceremony will take place at the Kings Highway Congregational Church and will be performed by the Rev. Irving D. Wildey.

Miss Constance Joy Reimer will act as maid of honor. The bridesmaids will include Miss Helen Cory, Miss Anita Levy, Miss Matilda Sabatini and Miss Anne Marx. After the wedding the couple will motor through the New England States and upon their return will make their home in Flatbush.
