There's dialogue trouble as well, and the acting in general is only so-so. The best moments in "Ladies Must Live" are supplied by Cliff Saum as an Indian butler. He merely grunts. On the second half of the Strand's bill is "South to Karanga" which sends Charles Bickford, as an American consul, on an exciting trip into the South African hinterlands. Muriel Angelus is handy and she suddenly becomes Mrs. McGinty. Unfortunately for "Boss" Tamiroff. McGinty falls in love with his wile. The didn't plan it that way at all.

Nor did he plan for McGinty to get a pang of conscience, after he was established in the State capital, and turn straight. That climactic fight, and the i sight of native Manoa boys being 1 lured by McLaglen gin to risk rickets and exploded eardrums by-diving in deep water, might repay some folks for patiently awaiting them. But many others might be i a little tinedged by the tattered story of white men bamboozling the islanders for their gems, and a Shanghai honky-tonk girl (Frances Farmer) falling in love with the native, Mr. Hail, whom she h.id set out to trap in MciJa'glen's greedy interests. Nick Carter, detective, holds up the second half of the Met's bill with his second modern-day appearance in an engaging mystery adventure called "Phantom Raiders."
