a distance of some 454 miles without having once on the route driven over even a stretch of highway that Is not prime class. Pleasure drivers who have time to enjoy New England's scenic wonders and who feel the urge to explore will want to try New England's network of second-grade roads, either paved or gravel-covered. They are well marked and well tended. Romantic byways, threading together village and meadow and woodland in a scenic garland, have their own distinctive charm. The riches of the back country are revealed for quiet enjoyment.

The most ardent explorer will discover a real corduroy road, a covered bridge or a tiny brook ford. While it Is possible to see all the many phases of New England in a tour of comparatively few hundred miles, many motorists like to specialize and devote all their vacation time to seeing thoroughly certain sections of the region. There are mountain tours, seashore jaunts, historical and literary pilgrimages, lake trips. Fine roads may be followed for all of these types. Since these attractions are, for the most part, common to the six New England States, the Summer vacationist who takes any one of the trips will become familiar with a good slice of the area.

Through the New England Council's Boston office the visitor may obtain information about any type of trip. MAINE )mjrif roam per June 1) Ay.ply your own TRW KL or tto Uiinuper, (. (itornt. He mania. sW.
