This base, one of the finest naval training schools In the country, gives the raw recruit Instruction in every type of modern sea warfare. At the inshore base, the tratnlng Is staggered with actual actve duty. When not engaged in essential duty at the base or at sea, the men are at school. In a regular schedule of classes, officers learn the latest in gunnery, communications, executive administration and operations. In training off the coast, both officers and men make practicable application of the lessons learned ashore.

Among the training vessels Is a yacht, once the pleasure craft of a multi-millionaire manufacturer. At sea, on crisp orders from the bridge, men and officers spring into action In a rapid series of drills. Dragging fire hose forward, heaving collision mats over the side, getting the boats over the side, and manning the ship armament are a few of the drills that make up the day's business. Officers take squints at the sun with the sextant, con the ship's course and progress from the bridge and get the experience of a ship afloat which prepares them for the command which one- day will be theirs. On the shore gun crews slam shells into dummy guns.
