McQUADE DIES; EX-HEAD OF LUMBER FIRM Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Freeport, Feb. 7-George T. McQuade, former president of the Coastwise Lumber Company and a Resident of Brooklyn for many years, died here today home of Raymond Malone, 309 St. He pine' was 63 and had been ill for some time. Mr.

McQuade, who was born in Brooklyn, had lived here for a number of years and was active in local civic affairs. He built one of the first large apartment houses, known As Freeport Hall. He also was largely responsible for having the name of Holy Redeemer Council, K. of changed to Bishop Molloy Council, and had served on the library board of Freeport. Mr.

McQuade headed the Coastwise Lumber Company until several years ago. He was the husband of the late Emma T. McQuade, who 1938. She was active Catholic circles in Brooklyn. viving are three brothers, Fergus.

Michael and John McQuade. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed. Joseph Mandigo, Raconteur, to Bear Mountain Hikers Joseph Mandigo of Bear tain Park, known to hundreds of hikers for his tales of the Hudson Valley, where his family lived since pre- Revolutionary days, died on Wednesday at the home of Henry Murk, 74 12th whom he was visiting. Death was due to a heart ailment. Mr.

Mandigo was born in Highland Falls and was a descendant of Peter Mandigo, an engineer sent here by Italian Government in the 18th century to investigate mining possibilities in the Hudson Valley. For many years Mr. Mandigo lived in a cottage in the Queensboro section of Bear Mountain Park, and it was a favored stop of hikers who rested and listened to his stories of the region based on family traditions. His grandfather fought in the Battle of Fort Clinton in the Revolution. Dihlman, Active Lutheran Headed Wartburg Home For Aged Here 20 Years Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Baldwin, Feb. 7-Funeral services for Andreas Dihlmann, 78, prominent Lutheran church worker, who died yesterday at his home, 118 Harrison will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church here.

Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery on Monday. Mr. Dihlmann was for 20 years president of the Wartburg Home for the Aged and Infirm, at 2598 Fulton Brooklyn, and at the time of his death was vice president of the Bethlehem Orphan and Half Orphan Asylum, on Staten Island. He was a trustee of the Lutheran Church of Hicksville. A native of Wurmberg, Wittenberg, Germany, Mr.

Dihlmann came to the United States when he was 22 years old. He owned a delicatessen shop in Manhattan for eight years and then moved to Brooklyn as owner of another store in Greenpoint. He retired from business 35 years ago. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Rolff of Baldwin, and a sister, Mrs.

Christene Weyhrauch, of Brooklyn. will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn. Mr. Kissling was born in Brooklyn and lived in Elmhurst from 1916 until 1936, when he retired and came to this village. A member of the Queensboro Lodge of Elks, he leaves a widow, Mrs.

C. Church. Interment St. John's Cemetery, MAX ANNENBERG, 66, NEWSIE, ROSE TO RICHES Phoenix, Feb. 7 -Max Annenberg, 66, who fought his way up from newsboy to wealthy newspaper executive, died at his home here today.

He was injured in an auto a accident in New York several months ago. His wife, Etta, and his sister, Mrs. L. H. Rose of Chicago, were at the bedside.

Annenberg, rormer director of circulation for the New York Daily News, was a brother of Moses L. Annenberg, publisher, sent to prison for income tax evasion. He leaves three children: Mrs. Mendell Gross, New York; Mrs. Sylva Lightner, New York, and Lt.

Ivan Annenberg, now with the Army at Baltimore. He will be buried in New York. His family planned to leave for New York by train tonight. Annenberg began selling newspapers on the Chicago streets at the age of 9, as soon as he arrived there with his family from their native Germany. At that time he knew so little English he could not pronounce the names of the papers he sold.

He remained in Chicago 35 years, until 1919. Along with his brother, M. L. Annenberg, former publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer now serving a three-year prison term for Federal income tax violation, Max Annenberg rose to prominence through the rough and tumble era of journalism, when newspaper wars were fought through circulation departments hooliganism, forerunner to modern, organized racketeering, was rampant in Chicago. Shortly after the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, Annenberg went to work for the Chicago Tribune, gathering subscriptions.

In 1910 he returned to the Chicago Tribune. When that newspaper started the Daily in New York, he directed circulation of it as well as Tribune. the In 1924 the Tribune organization founded Liberty Magazine in New York, he directed its circulation. He moved to New York in 1926 and remained there until his retirement except for a brief period in 1931 when he managed the Detroit Mirror, a Tribune and News enterprise. Annenberg's son, Ivan, succeeded him as director of circulation of the New York Daily News.

J. M. Patterson, publisher of the Daily News, in a "memo to Max Annenberg" on the editorial page of late editions today said: "Good-by. I am going to miss you a lot. For many years you have been my best friend.

Penn, 65; Song Composer Descendant of Settler Wrote 'Smilin' Through' Special to the Brooktyn Eagle New London, Feb. 7- Arthur A. Penn, composer of the song "Smilin' Through," which he wrote on the back of an envelope while riding on a Long Island Railroad train, died at his home here yesterday.

He was 65. Mr. Penn was born in London and was a direct descendant of William Penn. "Smilin' Through" became one of the nation's great song hits and its title was used for two motion pictures and for a play starring Jane Cowl. Mr.

Penn said he got his inspiration for the song from an advertising card in the train which showed a country cottage, winding roads and fields. He was the author of more than 30 operettas in addition to other compositions. His widow survives. Mrs. Crafts Rites Will Be Private Funeral services and burial for Mrs.

Annie F. Hogg Crafts, 75, daughter of the late Charles Bremmer Hogg, one of the founders of the Standard Oil Company, who was killed early yesterday when she fell from her sixth-floor apartment at 160 Henry will be strictly private. According to a spokesman for the family, Mrs. Crafts had been ill for some time and was under the care of a physician for several years. They believe that she went to the open window and became dizzy while attempting to get some fresh air.

Her body was found on the sidewalk by another tenant, Mrs. Anna Young, who called police. Surviving are Mrs. Crafts' husband. Thomas Young Crafts, a rettired newspaperman, and two daughters, Mrs.

Feb. 7 (P)- A soldier identified as Sgt. Robert Zittrer, 23, of Brooklyn. attached to a medical regiment at Fort Dix, was killed last night and John Tarantino, 19, of Jersey City, also a soldier, was injured when their automobile collided with a truck on Route 25. Motor Vehicle Inspector Nelson Snedecor said the truck had been stopped to fix a flat tire.

first executive secretary of the United States Golf Association, an office he held for 12 years, died today of a heart attack at his home, 155 98th Street. Mr. McMahon was known to nearly all of the noted professiona. and amateur golf stars in this country and to many of other countries. He began his career as an official scorer of the Metropolitan and United States Golf Associations and in 1922 was appointed the first executive secretary of the latter group.

He retired in 1934. Mr. McMahon had aided in conducting many championship matches throughout the country. He was a native of Brooklyn and was the husband of the late Katherine F. McMahon.

He is survived by A daughter, Mrs. W. R. Parpart; a brother, James, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Ganter.
