4 DrE. M.Hudson, Fingerprint Expert Developed New Detecting Process Used by Police Washington. Sept. 18 Dr. Erastus Mead Hudson, former New torlc physician credited with a fingerprint detecting development, in use by New Yorn City notice for several years, died here.

Dr. Hudson, who was 55. was a specialist in body chemistry and bacteriology. A discovery by Dr. Hudson that fingerprints on cloth and wood were discernible following the application of a chemical led the police to abandon the powder dusting proce.s& which was not effective except on smooth surfaces.

Dr. Hud-on's development was based on the power of silver nitrate to change the salt in a fingerprint to silver chloride. In the trial of Bruno Richard Hauotmann for the kiduap-murcler of diaries A. Lindbergh Dr. Hudson testified that he had found 503 fingerprints on the kidnapers ladder through the use of silver nitrate, althouah New Jersey police had failed to fiid any.
