BROOKLYN IA6LI, WEDNESDAY, MAY.2I, 1941 13 John Geoghan, Retired Clerk, Dr. Wells Named LOLA RIDGE, NOTED POET, DIES IN BORO HOME AT 57 16 Years in Register's office Draft Dental Head Cleric to Be Ordained In Boyhood Church Leading Congregational Pastors Will Take Part In Rites for Arthur Wells in Tompkins Church In the church of his boyhood, Arthur Wells, the son of Mr. and Mi. Prank Wells of 1033 Dean will be ordained a minister of the Congregational Church tomorrow night. The ordination services will take place at 8 o'clock in John Geoghan, retired clerk of the Kings County Register's office, died Sunday at the New York Hospital after an illness of two weeks.

He was 78 and lived in Greenpoint for more than 60 years, or since coming to this country from Ireland, where he was born, For the past two years he has made his home at 64-79 83d Rego Part For many years Mr. Oeoghan was a stationary and hoisting engineer and was much in demand throughout Greenpoint because of his 4111 in repairing engine; He obtained his position in the Register's office during the administration of Register James A. McQuade on. Jan. 1, 1922 and retired Dec.

31, 1938. Geoghan was a member of the People's Regular Democratic Organization of the 15th A. D. and was formerly a member of the James A. McQuade Organization.

He was also a member of Lexington Council, Knights of Columbus, and was a regular attendant at St. Anthony of Padua R. C. Church on Manhattan Ave. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs.

Margaret Hughes. Mrs. Delia McGroarty, Mrs. Elizabeth Woodruff and Mmjlice Kubtac; a son, Michael, "a patrolman attached ta the Bedford Ave. precinct; a brother, Patrick, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will take place Friday morning with a requiem mass at. X0 at the Church of St. Anthony" of Padua. Burial will be In Calvary Cemetery, Wot Loaned by Navy To Selective Service Dr, C. Thien formerly was head of the composing room of' the Rural New Yorker, and for 35 years was a printer with th Brooklyn Citizen. He retired in 1929. He was a member of the typographical union for 65 years and a few months" ago received a medal from the union In recognition of his long membership. Surviving are two, sons, Harry J. and Arthur Thlen, and four daughters.

At her death Miss Ridge had written sections of a long philosophical poem that promised to enlist her most mature powers. In recent years she expressed her philosophy thusly: "I feel we are living In a dynasty of fire. Unlike the stars whlcn-move In perfect harmony in the great design, we rush to Impact on our courses. But man is no mere puppet of destiny and he alone can extricate himself from We may come forth, for a period, Into the time of light." Funeral services will be private.

Miss Ridge was born In Dublin In 188S her early age In Australia and New Zealand. She cam to the United States In 1907 and for three years wrote fiction for popular magazines. In 1935 when she published her last volume of poetryshe received a Guggenheim fellowship.

Critics like Stephen Vincent Benet, author of "John Brown's Body," stated that Miss Ridge's works "bore the unmistakable sign Of genius. "I know of nothing like in American letters," he said, when speaking of "Firehead." Active for Briti Louise Hellmuth, Rfefired Teacher Miss Louise Hellmuth of 1037 Sterling Place, a retired teacher, died today at her home of a heart attack. Miss Hellmuth was born In Manhattan and had been active as a teacher In the public in Manhattan for more than 40 years.

Srie was educated at Hunter Col-leee and was first assigned to Public School 34. She retired In 1926 while a member of the faculty of Public School 12. Miss Hellmuth had resided In Brooklyn for about 35 years and was the last of hpr Immediate family. The funeral services will be held at 3 Friday at the Fair-child Chapel, 86 Lefferts Place. Interment -wlll be In Evergreen Cemetery.

'Leaned' hj Navy A native of Philadelphia, he graduated from the Dental College of Northwestern University in 1918 and immediately enlisted in the Navy's Dental Corps. He served until 192S and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant, senior rank. For the past ten years he has been a naval reserve officer. He was "loaned" by the Navy to the selective service. He was a president of the Northwestern Alumni Association, chairman for many years of the American Dental Society's legislation committee and conducted several clinics at the recent convention of the State Dental Society.

He Is 45 and resides at 184-60 Aberdeen Road. Jamaica Estates, with his wife, Clara, and two children. Catherine, 14, is a freshman at the Mary Louise Academy in Jamaica Estates, and Stacey, 15, attends Carson Long Military Institute, New Bloomfleld, Pa. tional Church. Taking prominent part in the ceremonies will be not only the Rev.

Dr. Alfred Grant Walton, pastor of the church, of which Mr. Wells a member, but the Rev. Dr. George Mahlon Miller of the Ocean Avenue Congregational Church, whom the young man has been serving as student assistant for the past year.

Mr. Wells was born in Brooklyn, and educated in its public schools, Brooklyn College, and the Union Theological Seminary. He has already accepted a call to the First Congregational Church of Fair-haven, and will start his work there early in June. Mr. Wells received his degree of Bachelor of Divinity from the seminary on Tuesday night.

In April of this year, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer David Pratt of 128 McDon-ough St. announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Marion Spencer Pratt, to Mr. Wells.

The service tomorrow night will be under the auspices of the New York City Congregational Church Association which approved his ordination in their Spring meeting at the First Congregational Church of Rockvllle Centre on May 8. Dr. Walton, as moderator, will deliver the prayer of ordination, while the charge to the candidate will be made by Dr. Miller. The Rev.

Walter A. R. McPherson, of the Lewis Avenue Congregational Church, will deliver the invocation. The Rev. Dr.

Julius August Brewer of Union Theological Seminary will preach the sermon. The Rev. Egbert Chamber Macklin of the Victoria Congregational Church, Jamaica, will read the scripture lesson, and the Rev. John A. Har-rer of the Park Slope Congregational Church will extend "the right hand of fellowship." Mr.

Wells will pronounce the benediction. A reception will follow in the church parlors. Gustav Meihofer, Ex-Restaurateur Had Grill for 30 Years At 335 Prospect Ave. Gustav Meihofer, retired restaurateur, who formerly operated Mel-hofer's Grill at 335 Prospect Ave. for 30 years, died last night at ynlty Hospital.

He was 70 and lived at 339 Prospect Ave. Mr. Meihofer was born in Germany and had lived in Brooklyn for half a century. He was a member of Werder Lodge, I. O.

O. and Branch 735 of the Workmen's STk and Death Benefit FYind. He sold his' business recently. Surviving are his widow, Bertha M. Meihofer; a daughter, Mrs.

Margaret Messerschmidt; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Simokat and Mrs. Emma Ennulat, and a Albert. Services will be held at the William A. Ringe Parlors, 361 7th Ave.
