BROOKLYN EAGLE, WEDNESDAY, DEC. 30, 1942 'Springtime in the Rockies1 New Holiday Film at Albee SERVICE MEN OF BROOKLYN HAVE STYLE ALL THEIR OWN York men, but they stick pretty much to a uniform routine. Now, Chlcajo Is Different "You can tell a Chicago and Midwest Jitterbug after the first eight bars of music. He goes into the hop routine, and there's nothing you can do about it. "Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and the old South seem to have retained their characteristic conservatism even in Jitterbugging.

Theirs is a smooth, easy Jitter, and it comes as a welcome relief at times. Virginians combine their Boalwright Makes Town Hall Debut By MILES KASTENDIECK In Howard Boatwright will be found a young American violinist with decided talent and musical resourcefulness. His debut recital In Town Hall last night revealed him to be well versed In matters of style, well equipped in technique, Christy-Vicky Lane Broadway show, featuring Carmen Miranda leading a hot chorus of Brazilian swing-sters. The co-feature at the Albee, "Cat People," is a story based on an ancient Serbian tradition, according to which the women of a certain town turn into cats either when they kiss a man or become enraged. Simone Simon, as the Inheritor of this tradition, not only turns Into a cat, but a panther when she is crossed! Kent Smith is starred with her, and Tom Conway and Jane Randolph are also featured.

J. C. By ERNES!" FOSTER i Hollywood, Dec. 30 (UP Brooklyn nd New York service men are the most original jitterbugs. And Holly- wood's Jive experts In the army and navy rank at the bottom or the list, That's according to Eleanor Counts, Hollywood actress and youthful rug cutter, who does a featured Jitter'ouc dance with Glenn i Ford in Columbia's "Destroyer." Eleanor should know.

She de- votes three of her evenings each 1 week to the Hollywood Canteen and has danced with thousands of marines, sailors and soldiers from every section of the country. The hep cats of the Eastern sea- board lead the field, Eleanor says, with Brooklyn ahead in the Jitter I i Pj lit. I 1 'I I bug technique. Here's the way she rates the country's fighting: 1. Brooklyn, New York and the East.

2. Texas. 3. Chicago alio the midwest. 4.

The old South. 5. California and the Pacific Northwest. "Those Brooklyn and New York boys come up with more new and tricky steps," Miss Counts said. "They feature the Lindy with their own individual trick interpolations.

Sometimes it's pretty hard to follow them. "Texas ooys are partial to the 1-2-1-2-3 step and are nearly on a par with the Brooklyn and New EO. Jitterbug with a college step. "The Jitterbug originated in the I East, so it is natural that the Far West should be the last to take up the craze and be the least proficient. California and the Northwest have their own ideas about what a Jive should be, and It crops out as a combination of them all.

Much as I hate to, I've got to put Clifornians at the bottom of the Jitterbug heap." Ninety-five percent of the service boys Miss Counts has danced with do some sort of a Jitter. She rarely runs Into a smooth dancer at the canteen. "But when I do it's a welcome experience," she added. "After all, It's pretty nice to have a strong shoulder to lean on." Stork Fools Sergeant Santa Ana, Cal. He played with assurance, refinement and comprthension, making a distinctly favorable impression.

It was to his credit also that the program was out of the ordinary': There was nothing hackneyed; Instead the lineup of Handel's Sonata No. 4 in Ptzzettl's Sonata in Prokofieff's Concerto No. 2 in Minor offered some fresh interest. A final group consisted of Bloch's Nigum, Debussy's Valse, La plus que lente, and Paganinl's La Clochette. While all was nicely worked out and carefully set forth, there was wanting at times a more definitive accent, a preclseness to point up good phrasing, and more emmo-tional expressiveness.

Mr. Boat- wright's tone is well-rounded and the first in Massachusetts to adopt parking meters and has installed 150 on a six-month trial basis. Together, the two attractions make the Albee definitely a place to work up a Joyous New Year mood. "Springtime in the Rockies," a 20th Century -Fox picture, in Technicolor, has the irrepressible blond Betty Grable starred with John Payne and Cesar Romero, Carmen Miranda, Edward Everett Horton, Charlotte Greenwood, in addition to a large supporting cast, and Harry James and his Music Makers.

Jive addicts will be delighted to hear that Mr. James gets the screen all to himself for a spell, with the thrilling results that might be expected. This picture is the one which gave a delighted world "Run, Little Raindrop, Run," "I Had the Craziest Dream" and other hit tunes. Betty Grab'- and John Payne do a rainy day in the pirk number, with "Run, Little Raindrop, Run." The story of "Springtime In the Rockies" concerns Vicky Lane and Dan Christy, otherwise Betty Grable and John Payne, as a dance team, engaged to each other, but always scrapping. Dan is inclined to pay too much attention to other girls to suit Vicky, and she finally breaks up the partnership and ftoes off on a dancing tour with Victor, or Cesar Romero.

They are booked at Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. The Canadian Rockies, in Technicolor, provide a charming setting for the rest of this stormy love story, which develops into a highly complicated affair, with Carmen Miranda in the role of little Miss Fixit, adding hugely to the complications.
