Daled: May 27th. 1913. MARTIN GREEN. Referee. m27-8t Thg Wanfod AutomobiUe Stock Market Continues Rise Leadership Improves In Expanded Volume Stocks were strong and penetrated new high ground for the past three years In quite active trading today.

The market was honeycombed with many new highs and leadership was of substantially better quality than some recently seen. Lower priced issues were relegated to the rear. Chemicals and other blue chips were at new highs, and steels and non-ferrous metals surged to the fore. Railroads and utilities were around their best recent levels. Gains in steels ranged from fractions to over a point In Youngs- town.

Rail equipments gained as much as two points. A long list of rail shares rose, although gains were largely fractional in the group. New highs were set in both Dow Chemical and duPont on gains of a point to two points or so, while Coco Sola jumped over three points. International Nickel, Allied Chemical, Sears and Pepsi-Cola rose a point or more. Oils firmed slightly.

Rubbers were mixed, although gains predominated. Motors lagged behind the general market and were irregular. Some utility preferreds registered quite wide gains. Bond Market Irregular Trading In the corporate bond market was along moderate lines only today and there was some Irregularity of price in railroad obligations. Price changes were not very great in the majority of these Issues.

St. Paul 5s were fairly active among defaulted lines issues and were virtually unchanged. Minor losses and gains developed elsewhere. Second grade rail liens continued firm to fractionally higher. Southern Pacific 4'ns sold at about a point rise.

Among local tractions Third Ave. adjustment 4s of 1965 sold up a point. Triborough Bridge Authority were slightly higher. Philadelphia and Reading Coal liens reflected quickened demand and were at a new high, while Hudson Coal 5s rose fractionally among industrials. TJ.

S. Government bonds were strong with gains through the list for both taxable and exempt Issues. Latin American bonds firmed in an otherwise dull foreign list. Anaconda Copper To Disburse 50c. National Dairy Products Corpora- tion declared a dividend of 20 cents, payable July 1 to record June 7. Triborough Bridge Plans Adjustment Triborough Bridge Authority will shortly seek bondholders' assents to a plan for freeing certain cash assets and for a readjustment of its sinking fund and bond maturity schedules. These steps will be taken so as to avoid any possible interruption in the continuity of Interest payments.

The proposed plan, as now drawn ud. contemDlates transfer to the in terest account of nearly $1,000,000 formerly set aside as a fund for I widening of roadways and installa- tion of stiffening trusses on the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. Work on these improvements was halted some time ago because of inability to obtain materials. Triborough has no payments on account of principal maturing this year, but on June 15, 1944. an initial $800,000 sinking fund installment on Its $50,000,000 of 3 Us, 1980, will fall due.

Triborough's indicated earnings since tne start or ihu nave iain-n snort 01 covering iuu interest, requirements after allowing for op erating expenses. Its traffic has been hit harder by gasoline ration-1 ing than that of some other port ant toll revenue project, groups because of heavier dependence on private automobile travel. I Short-wave enthusiasu from all over the United States and Canada have informed Mrs. Catherine McDonnell of 101 Berkeley Place that her son, Staff Sgt. Thomas P.

McDonnell la a prisoner of war in Germany. Sergeant McDonnell is included in the list of American soldiers missing in action released by the War Department today. On May 11, however, the letters from radio "hams" say, a German news broadcast asked that a message be relayed to the McDonnells. "Tell Mother and Dad and all the folks that I am well and not to worry, I am being held prisoner in Germany," Drpt. Confirmation Confirmation of this came in the form of a War Department message last Thursday.

Since then the family has been awaiting instructions from Washington about contacting Sergeant McDonnell through the Red Cross. Sergeant McDonnell, an aerial gunner, has been in the army since November, 1041. He went overseas In September, 1942, and served with 1 bomber crew operating out or England. Letters home to his family told of his participation in five bombing missions over continental Europe. In March, he was cited for his work during a raid over Wilhelmshaven.

He was first reported missing in action on April 24. Vatican Message Reports Boro Man Captive in Italy Word has reached the family of Pvt. Harry Galler, 26, of 934 45th that he is being held prisoner in Italy. The War Department lists him as missing In action, but, as in Sergeant McDonnell's case, Independent messages have been received. On May 10 a message transmitted through the offices of the Vatican informed Mrs.

Benjamin Galler, the soldier's mother, that he was In a transit camp in Italy and that she could contact him as soon as he was transferred to a permanent one. Private Galler has been in the army since June 10, 1942. He was with the first contingent of American troops in Africa and was reported missing about Easter. He is a graduate of Brooklyn College. 'Making History' Writes Boy Reported as Missing "The boys are making history over here, Mom." Sgt.

John V. Lyons, 20, wrote home to Mrs. John Lyons of 1605 10th Ave. "There's a lot of activity going on and the 'Lady Luck' (his plane) is greatly battered but we're carrying on." Sergeant Lyons has been listed as missing in action in the North African area since May 3. His parents received a letter from him two days later, mostly about the things he imagined going on back in Brooklyn at that hour of the day.

He enlisted in the army in Mav. 1D42, and went overseas about Christmas. Sergeant Lyons was an aerial gunner and received the DistinguisheJ Flying Medal for participating in a bombing mission. He attended St. John's Prep, where he excelled in football.

Missing Sergeant Starin Wanted to Fight Japs Sgt. Charles H. Starin, 23, missing in action in North Africa, was disappointed when he was sent there because "he wanted to fight the Japs," his grandfather. Charles Gross, of 8 Virginia Port Washington, said today. He wanted to fight them so badly that he tried to enlist three times before he was finally accepted.

He was rejected the first two times because of his teeth, so he promptly went to a dentist and did something about it. Sergeant Starin, an aerial gunner, had two years of flying experience before he entered the army in May. 1942. He went oversas the middle of January. Sergeant Mulcare, Missing, Trained as Commando In his last letter home, dated March 22.

Arthur V. Mulcare I I 'Y I wot i. itU I The American Iron and fiteel Institute convened today at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhat tan for it 53d general meeting, Attendance was the smallest in many years because of war conditions. While most of the high executives of the Industry were present, a large number of operat lng officials were absent. Walter S.

Tower, president, on calling the meeting to order, spoke of the industry's splended record, He said that since May, 1942, more than 87,000,000 net tons of steel had been produced and currently the output is at the rate of 000 net tons per annum. Asserting that there was a chance of this latter high figure being exceeded by one or two million tons in the total 1943 production, he added that such a goal cannot be reached "unless a courageous national policy puts war above politics and prevents labor stoppages In your mines and mills like those now occurring in other industries." "Price ceilings cannot be preserved Indefinitely against constantly rising costs," he continued. "A crisis cannot be far off. Some one, somewhere must soon say 'no' to further demands that add to costs. Otherwise we have little chance to escape the ruinous effects of runaway price inflation." Other speakers were Vice Admiral S.

M. Robinson, Office of Procurement and Materials, Navy Department, and MaJ. Gen. L. H.

Campbell chief of ordnance, War Department. 161 Million Slice Seen in Rail Kef Railroad net income this year stands to be nicked about by the recent freight rate cut and the non-operating worker wage increase proposed yesterday by an emergency board. This cut in net earnings Is far less than normally might be expected from the large reduction in railroad gross revenues which will lesult from the combination squeeze on railroad income. The difference is absorbed by taxes. Recommended wage increases of fi cents an hour for non-operating railroad employes will add about $204,000,000 to the railroad wage bill.

At current tax levels, however, some 60 percent or more will come out of Federal taxes, and railroads will have a net bill of around $80,000,000. For the 12 months ended Feb. 28, railroads paid 59.5 percent of their income in Federal taxes. That included 10 months of 1942 during which the majority of railroads had substantial tax credit carryovers to cut down the overall rate. This wear's tax rate undoubtedly will be higher and will cut the net also lost by wage increases.

World Currency Plan Condemned The recently proposed British plan for international stabilization of currencies would tend to promote the interest of debtor countries, particularly Great Britain, at the expense of the United States, the Guaranty Trust Company of New York charged today and labelled both the British and American plans as "dangerous." The plans would involve the exchange of American currency for other nations' currency on terms beyond this country's direct control, and would enable nations to buy merchandise without being able to pay for It, the bank said in its publication, the Guaranty Survey. "The United States, in particular, as the chief creditor nation, would have to be prepared to confront a combination of debtor nations advocating a course that would favor themselves at the expense of the creditor," the bank said. "It is inconceivable that this country could under any circumstances become a party to any such agreement. The nature of both the British and American plans, moreover, is such as to involve some risk of loss to a nation with a credit balance on international account.
