Samuel McAlister, 60, U. S. A. (retired), veteran of the World War, died yesterday in Nassau Hospital from the effects of an overdose of medicine taken to induce sleep. Captain McAlister was taken to the hospital Thursday.

Captain McAlister, a brother of a former 'Governor of Tennessee, lived at 11 Beech and had been a resident of this village for many years. He served throughout the war overseas, about serious loss health, including loss of hearing from heavy artillery fire. He was retired shortly after the war for disability and was on a pension. Garden City police records show that, on two previous occasions. Captain McAlister had attempted to end his life.

On May 14, 1924. he shot himself in the left side of the chest with a .38 calibre service revolver, and he was under treatment for that wound for five months before he was discharged from the hospital. Ten years later, in 1934. Captain McAlister again attempted to end his life, slashing his wrists with a razor. His condition was discovered in time to get him to a hospital.

Edison Co. Aide Drowns in Lake Otto E. Gercken Suffers Heart Attack While He Swims at N. J. Resort Special to The Eagle Bloomingdale, N.

Aug. 2-Otto E. Gercken, assistant cashier of the Brooklyn Edison Company, was drowned here yesterday while swimming in Glen Wild Lake. Mr. Gerecken, who was 39.

was seized with heart attack while in the water. His body was recovered shortly afterward in 15 feet of water. Mr. Gercken, who lived at 00 Ridgewood Brooklyn, was here on vacation with his family, Funeral services will be held in the home tomorrow night with interment on Wednesday in Evergreens Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Miss Elizabeth Gercken, three sons, a brother, John, and his mother.

Mrs. Julia Gercken. Mr. Gercken entered the employ of the Brooklyn Edison Company, Dec. 22, 1919, as a clerk.

He was assigned to the treasurer's department and worked his way up to the position as assistant cashier about five years ago. He was a member of the Brooklyn Edison Club. 11,000 Will Enter Playground Tilts Great Neck, Aug. 2-Nearly 1,000 children from 22 playgrounds are expected to take part in the Nassau County playground championships on Memorial Field here Aug. 18.

The competitions in running, jumping, paddle tennis, horseshoe pitching and marbles will open at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. The competitors have been divided into four groups: midgets, cubs, juniors and seniors. Prizes will be gold. silver and bronze medals.

Lawrence University. Canton, N. Y. died yesterday. The body was sent to Canton for funeral services and burial.

Lagarenne, commanding the 11th Detective District, died yesterday in the Methodist Episcopal Hospital after an illness of nearly a week.

Patrolman Healy born in Brooklyn on Aug. 5, 1889. He was a chauffeur before joining the force. April 6, 1917. He served overseas in the World War.

As chauffeur to Inspector Lagarenne he had gone daily with him to the Robins shipyard strike until to enter the hospital last Tuesday night. According to his commanding officer Patrolman Healy was still suffering from shock over the loss of his wife seven months ago. He was a member of Sheridan Post. American Legion, and lived at 511 6th St. A requiem mass will be celebrated Thursday in St.

Xavier's R. C. Church and interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. He is survived by three children, Edward.

Minnie Anderson, 20, Negress, is to be arraigned in City Court today, charged with the murder of her husband. James, 30, whose body was found yesterday in a field beside a tavern at 20 New St. A vegetable knife had been plunged through his heart, and doctors saidhe died instantly. Mrs. Anderson was arrested at her home by Glen Cove police and detectives of the Second Squad, Syosset, Nassau County police.

Police said the husband and wife had been arguing in the tavern day night, with the wife carrying the fight, it is alleged, against her husband's wishes. When Anderson left the tavern she followed him and, according to the police, knifed him. Acting Coroner Arthur Buxenbaum ordered the body to Meadowbrook Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Huntington Driver Is Hurt in Crash Langdon W. Wyman, 39 Cedar Huntington, is in Mather Memorial Hospital, Port Jefferson, today, suffering possible rib fractures and lacerations of both legs.

The smashed car was discovered by Smithtown Officers George Baade and Robert Hesse, who were driving along the road. It is believed that Wyman. who was driving west on the highway, fell asleep. Collingwood, 68. Ship Yard Worker James Collingwood, a native of Scotland, yesterday after a lingering illness Kings County Hospital. Born in Port Glasgow, Scotland, 68 years ago, Mr. Collingwood came to Brooklyn about 20 years ago after having lived for a time on Staten Island. He was employed by several ship building companies in the Greater City but retired about four years ago when he first became ill.

A member of Neptune Lodge, No. 49, F. A. in Glasgow, Mr. Collingwood had never transferred his membership to a local unit.

His home was at 351 Fifth where funeral services, both and Masonic, will be conducted morrow night. Interment day will be in Evergreens Cemetery. Surviving are two sons, James Jr. and Andrew, and a daughter, Mrs. Susan Goetz.

FrederickBierhoff: Doctor and Author Dr. Frederick Bierhoff of 88 Central Park West. Manhattan, died 1 in Blue Hill, Me. He was 69 and was urologist and former consulting cystoscopist at Gouverneur Hospital. He was born in New York City and was a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University.

Dr. Lierhoff was an assistant in the pediatrics department in the Vanderbilt Clinic and attending surgeon in the German Dispensary. He was for ten years of the 8th N. Y. N.

serving as sergeant major and quartermaster. An author and specialist, he was a member of several medical sociaties and also of the Lambs. His widow and a nephew, Dr. Alan Bierhof, survive. Mrs.

A. Shouldice Rites Tomorrow Special to The Eagle Bardonia, N. Aug. 2-Funeral services will be held in the Presbyterian Church here at noon tomorrow for Mrs. Anna M.

Shouldice of 193-17 109th Road, Hollis, L. I. Mrs. Shouldice died yesterday in her home. She was born at Rockland Lake 53 years ago but for the past 20 years had resided in Queens.

Surviving are her husband. J. B. Shouldice, a brother Oscar Reimer, a retired captain in the New York Police Department, and her mother, Mrs. Eva Reimer.

Interment will be in the cemetery here. Frederick Hulsmann Knoxville, Aug. 2 (P)- Frederick Hulsmann, 61, former physical director athletic clubs in New York, died suddenly yesterday at the home of a son-in-law. At one time he was trainer for the Rockefeller famiry. He is survived by his widow, a son, Frederick Jr.

of Brooklyn; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Dreiscer of Brooklyn and Mrs. Frank Ledgerwood of Knoxville; three. sisters and five brothers. Jeremiah Harrington Jeremiah Harrington, a retired coal and ice merchant, who was born in New York City 70 years ago, died on Friday after a brief illness in his home, 1712 Gates Ave.

Mr. 'Salganik was born in Kiev, Russia, 50 years ago. He painted portraits of William Howard Taft, Cardinals Haves and Mundelein and former Vice President Charles Curtis. Portraits of 12 past presidents of the American Bible Society, hanging in its headquarters, were his work. His widow.

Mrs. Sarah Salganik; two sons, Jules and Joseph, and a daughter, Gilda, survive. Anton C. G. Hupfel.

Head of Brewery Anton O. G. Hupfel, 88, president of the Hupfel Brewing Corporation, died yesterday in his home, 148 E. 37th St. 1.1 for more than a year.

Mr. Hupfel died in the 1 home in which hits father, John C. G. Hupfel, had lived 79 vears. His father, born John C.

Glaser, assumed the name of Hupfel when his mother married Anton Hupfel, who married the founder of the brewery business in 1854. Mr. Hupfel was vice president. manager and a trustee of the compart owning the realty of the brewery organization. He also was secretary of the Hup Realty Ho was a member of the Lambs and the New York Athletic Club.

Two brothers, Adolph G. and Chris G. survive. Morris Jacklowitz. Ex-Silk Firm Head Morris Jacklowitz, retired head of the firm of M.

Jacklowitz, silk merchants of 234 W. 39th Manhattan, died yesterday in his home, 437 Kingston Ave. Born in Latvia 71 years ago. Mr. Jacklowitz came to this country 31 years ago.

After living in Manhattan and the Bronx he moved to Brooklyn about 15 years ago. He had retired about five years ago. Mr. Jacklowitz had been a member of Temple Shaari Zedek. He was also a member of the Courland Benevolent Society and the Dunja Society.

Funeral will be tomorrow in the chapel at cervices, he 4515 Fort Hamilton Parkway. Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Clara Jacklowitz. Hold W. H.

Foster Funeral Services Funeral services were held today at C. Ray Daily's Funeral Home at 14 5th Bay Shore, for William F. Foster, 68, a retired builder of 9 Park Bay Shore, who died in the Southside Hospital on Friday morning after a short illness. The Rev. William R.

Watson of St. Petor's Episcopal Church officiated. Burial followed in the Bellport Cemetery. Mr. Foster was born in Water Mill and had spent the last 45 years of his life in Bay Shore.

He retired as a building contractor ten years ago. He was a member of the Oddfelows Lodge of Bay Shore, He leaves his widow, the former Emma Selover; a stepson, Allan Ritch of Rockville Center, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Charles E. Pfeiffle of ylon. Arrange Court Funeral Rites Funeral arrangements were being completed today for former Justice of the Peace William Court of Lake Grove, who committed suicide Saturday by shooting himself in the head with a revolver.

The former justice of the peace. whose large chicken farm is located in Lake Grove, near Lake Ronkonkoma, was found dead in a corn field on the property. The body was discovered by his wife, Mrs. Emma Court. The revolver was found beside the body.

She notified Dr. Guy M. McLean of Lake Ronkonkoma, who notified Brookhaven Town Officer Jacob Baczensky. Coroner Grover A. Silliman of Savville, called to the scene, declared Court a suicide.

Mr. Court was born in Brooklyn 52 years ago and resided there for 35 years before moving to Suffolk County. For 14 years he served as a member of the town board in Brookhaven and as a justice of the peace for the same period of time. Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Marion: and a son, William two sisters and a brother. F.

Henry Nothel Dies: Ex-Restaurateur Was Friend of Many Political Leaders and Held High Office in Masonry Masonic and religious rites will tomorrow night for Henry Nothel, Masonic leader and former proprietor of Nothel's Restaurant, known to many politicians and leaders in downtown Manhattan. He died yesterday in his home, 448 75th St. Mr. Nothel conducted the restaurant at Read and Elm Sts. and numbered among his friends and acquaintances many city officials.

Born in Germany 71 years ago, he had been resilent of Brooklyn about 33 years. When Prohibition started he left the restaurant business and retired for a time. For the last ten years he had been an official of the Paradise Pie Baking Company. A past master of Herrmann Lodge 268, F. A.

Mr. Nothel was also a past district deputy grand master in Manhattan. He was a member of the Teutonic Club of Manhattan, the New York Schutzen and the Arnt Hagner Society, composed of former residents of his home village In Germany. Mr. Nothel was also a member of St.

Retired City Clerk Special to The Eagle Lynbrook, Aug. 2-Funeral services for Edward Nevill Dalton, 79. of 284 Rocklyn who died in his sleep, will be held Wednesday morning at the home followed by a requiem mass at St. Raymond's Church. Mr.

Lalton was a retir edemploye of the City of New York. He was a clerk in the civil service commission of the old city of Brooklyn and, at the time of consolidation in 1898 was transferred to the finance department in New York where he worked, under controller. Edward Dalton M. Groat, served until 1934 when he retired. The Dalton family has lived in Brooklyn for almost 100 years, Mr.

Dalton was born in the old Sixth Ward. His father, William was a Sandy Hook pilot. He is survived by a wife. Mary J. Colgan; three sons and two daughters.

Two of the sons, William E. and Edward are employed in the Board of Transportation. The other son is John C. The two daughters are Miss Sara G. and Mrs.
