J. S. Mattimore Dies in 63d Year Walworth Co. Official Was St. Francis College Athlete--Rites Monday James S.

Mattimore, vice president of the Walworth Company of 60 E. 42d Manhattan, and a well known college athlete more than 40 years yesterday in Long Island Hospital. Collecte Mr. Mattimore had been ill for seven weeks. Born 62 years ago, he was a life resident of Brooklyn.

He entered the employ of the KellyJones Company as an office boy and the office of vice president. When the company was absorbed about 15. years ago by the Walworth Company, manufacturers of pipe fitting and valves, Mr. Mattimore became vice president of that organization. Mr.

Mattimore, who was treasurer of the Manufacturers Standardization Society, was a member of the Uptown Club and a director in both the Valve and Fitting Institute and the Eastern Supply Association. was in graduate of St. Francis Prep and St. Francis College. While attending the latter he became noted for his work on the baseball and football teams.

Mr. Mattimore was a charter member of Columbus Council. K. of and a member of the St. Albans Golf Club, and a former member of the Crescent Athletic Club.

He also was a member of the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Refuge R. C. Church, Foster and Ocean where a requiem mass will be celebrated Monday morning. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Mr.

Mattimore, who lived at 1098 Elmore Place, survived by his widow, Mrs. 'Anne Dalton Mattimore; four sons, John Thomas James S. and William and four daughters, Margaret Anne Cecily and Mrs. Adam B. McClatchy.

Mayor at Services Of Detective Astel Mayor LaGuardia, who weekly visited Detective Isadore Astel, of 764 45th who was shot Dec. 23 by a Negro holding up a Manhattan store, today attended Astel's funeral services in Manhattan. The detective died Wednesday in the Hospital for Joint Diseases, Manhattan, where he had received 24 blood transfusions and had been operated on 10 times. Police Commissioner Valentine. who also visited him regularly, had promoted Astel to a third -grade detective and presented the gold police combat Astel was buried in Montefiore Cemetery, Springfield, with full department honors.

Smith, 69, Governor of Vermont, 1934-36, died yesterday at his home here. He was president of the Marble Savings Bank of Rutland at his death. His early life was devoted to farming and the manufacture of brick. The former Governor had a wide legislative experience through three terms in the upper and lower houses of the General Assembly. In 1932 he became Lieutenant Governor and Governor two years later.

He is survived by two daughters and a brother. Lord Runciman, Dean of Shipping London, Aug. 13 (A)-Lord Runciman, 90, father of Walter Runciman, former president of the board of trade, died today in his home at Newcastle. The aged peer, often called "the grand old man of shipping," taken ill aboard his yacht, Sunbeam II, was removed to his home. Only last night doctors reported an improvement in his condition.

Lord Runciman, who went to sea in sail as a youth, was made chairman of the Anchor Line two years ago. He wrote sea books during the last 30 years of his life. William J. Fitzgerald William J. Fitzgerald, an insurance agent, died Wednesday of injuries received when he fell down A flight of stairs at his residence, 1137 Jefferson Ave.

He was 65 and resided in Brooklyn for almost half a century. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lauretta M. Kunsman and Mrs. Helen Mark, and a son, Dr.

William Fitzgerald Jr. The funeral will be on Saturday morning from his home, followed by requiem mass at Fourteen Holy Martyrs R. C. Church. Obituaries HARRY HANSEN died on Wednesday after a long illness in the Veterans Hospital, Kingsbridge.

Caroline Henderson Griffiths, widow of John Lewis Griffiths, former American Counsel General in London, were to be held this afternoon at her home, 132 Montague St. Burial was to be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Griffiths, who was 73, died Tuesday at her home. After the death of Mr.

Griffiths in 1914. Mrs. Griffiths published a collection of his speeches entitled "Greater Patriotism." In 1917 she published a book containing articles by representative men and women of the United States and of the United States' allies in the World War under the title of "Defenders of Democracy." The proceeds of the sale were used to help needy families of United States naval militia, and 1919. to found two children's libraries, known as "Les Heures Joyeuses" in Paris and Brussels. Surviving is her sister, Mrs.
