P. Fennelly Funeral Rites Set A requiem mass was celebrated this morning in Our Lady of Victory R. C. Church for William P. Fennelly, who was killed by an elevated train at the Troy Ave.

station. Mr. Fennelly was born in Brooklyn 62 years ago and for more than 30 years had been a member of Our Lady of Victory Church and its Holy Name Society. He was a former officer of Columbus Council, K. of and was active in Democratic circles.

Since retiring from the butcher business he had made his home with a sister, Mrs. James T. Carroll, at 279 Argyle Road. In addition to Mrs. Carroll he leaves his widow, Mrs.

Lillian Wilde Fennelly; a daughter, Dorothy; two sons, John and William; two other sisters, Mrs. Margaret Dunn and Mrs. John F. Donnelly, and five brothers, Timothy, John, Philip, Dennis and Peter. Interment followed in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Father Gilmartin Rites Tomorrow The Divine Office will be chanted tomorrow night and a requiem mass celebrated Monday morning in the R. C. Church of SS. Peter and Paul, The Bronx, for the Rev. Terence E.

Gilmartin, pastor there for 15 years, who died of a heart attack in the rectory. Father Gilmartin was known as the "baseball priest" and a familiar to members was, the New York Giants. Surviving are a brother, Francis and a sister, Katherine. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Miss Sarah B.

Smith East Rockaway, July services were conducted this afternoon for Miss Sarah B. Smith at the residence of a niece, Mrs. John W. Davison of 30 Ocean with whom she had made her home for 20 years. She died there Thursday after a long illness at the age of 76.

Born in New York City, Miss Smith lived with her family the greater part of her life in up-state New York, and came here 20 years ago. She leaves three other nieces and two nephews: Mrs. William L. Kitchell of Garden City, Mrs. Harold Towse of Rockville Centre, Miss Ether Schiffmacher of Garden City, Frank M.

Schiffmacher and Clarence E. Smith, both of Cambridge, Mass. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. George Wilson, pastor Bethany Congregational church, of which Miss Smith was a member. Burial was private.

Dr. John A. Cousens Brookline, July 3, (P) Funeral services for Dr. John Albert Cousens, 62, for 18 years president of Tufts College at Medford, who died at his home late yesterday after a heart attack. will be held Tuesday at 2 P.

M. at Goodard Chapel of the college. Cousens expanded Tufts' plant, enlarged its faculty, doubled its enrollment and virtually rebuilt its campus. Temple B'nai Israel, tomorrow for Morris Kaplan, active civic worker and leader of Bay Ridge. Mr.

Kaplan, who was 66. died in his home, 125 88th yesterday after a lingering illness. Born in Russia, he had been a resident of Bay Ridge 45 years. Prior to prohibition. Mr.

Kaplan was engaged in the liquor business. When this was banned, he entered the real estate field and was head of Morris Kaplan until about 10 years ago when he retired. Mr. Kaplan also was active in the annual drives of the Federation for the support Jewish charities and headed the campaign in his section. In one campaign he was associate chairman for Brooklyn.

A member of Israel Zion Hospital, he also aided in the campaign for the erection of that institution. He was a member of Brooklyn Lodge, No. 22, B. P. O.

Elks; Adytum Lodge of Masons and the 7th A. D. Democratic Club. A leader in the social and civic life of Bay Ridge, he served for two years as president of Temple B'nai Israel until ill health forced him to withdraw. He is survived by his widow, Marie Chetkin Kaplan, and three sons, James, Sigmund and Harold.

Following religious rites in the temple, burial will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Splain Denies Slate Decided "No official consideration has been given to date for any candidate for any office in Queens and no unof- ficial decision along that line has been made," Deputy County Clerk John Splain of Flushing, chief lieutenant of James Roe, State committeeman of the 4th A. leader of the forces seeking to oust James C. Sheridan as county leader, asserted today.

This apparently leaves the field in the Roe rants open tor any one who might like to run for Borough President. Alderman James A. Burke, however, because of his known dislike of Sheridan policies sO far seems to have the best in with the Roe workers. However, the Roe organization will open its headquarters at 60-19 Roosevelt Woodside, next week and then it is expected the real fireworks will start. Slogan Adopted The slogan of the forces aligned against Sheridan will be "Democracy against Autocracy." They claim an indorsement by approximately 00 workers in the 1st A.

D. and the same number in the 3d A. D. The Pulaski Democratic Club of the 4th A. of which John Szarzynski is the executive member, has unanimously voted to follow the leadership of Daniel J.

Corcoran, leader the club bearing his name and former leader of the 1st zone of the 4th A. D. Corcoran has been a consistent foe of Sheridan since the latter was made county leader and is a staunch supporter of Roe. battle is anticipated when the county executives of the party meet at the call of Sheridan some time this month. A definite lineup of the forces on both sides of the fence is expected as a result of the meet- ing.

Ellen Coxon Estate Appraisal $16,611 The late Ellen Coxon, who died Jan.

30, 1937, left a gross estate of $16.611.97 and a net estate of 852.09, according to a report by State Transfer Tax Appraiser David F. Soden on file with the Surrogate today. Most of her assets were in cash and stocks. Her home at 1537 E. 12th St.

was appraised at $4,250. The estate went to her four children, Francis George Coxon of Summit, N. Charles Alfred Coxon of Fargo, N. Doris Noel Beechley Coxon of 1537 E. 12th and Ellen Irene Smith of 1715 E.

More than 1,000 witnessed the production, and the crowd is expected to be larger at the concluding performance tonight. The well-paced, tuneful, amusing revue in 23 scenes was well received by the audience. Mrs. Nicholas R. Jones, general chairman, as in former years, was assisted by a large committee.

Most popular, apparently, with the first night's audience, was the socially prominent, Mrs. Eugene Maxwell the two solo skits on the program. Her number was entitled "Gypsy Rose Maxwell, the Last of the Strip Teasers," and was presented in a manner evoked convulsed roars of laughter. On the list of patrons and patronesses were: Mr. and Mrs.

Winthrop W. Aldrich. Mr. John Gunther, 76, Ex-Alderman, Dies Former Leader of 12th A. D.

Served 4 TermsWas Calder's Sponsor Former Alderman John D. Gunther, lifelong friend and political sponsor of former Senator William M. Calder, died last night in his home, 1490 E. 57th after a lingering illness. He was 76 years old, and City, came although to born Brooklyn in as New a youth.

York Leader of the old 12th A. D. G. O. Mr.

Gunther served four terms as representative of the 47th Aldermanic District. He resigned from the board to become clerk of the 6th Municipal Court. Later he served as auditor for the Shipping Board. When running for Alderman in 1905, he carried the district by 4,500, the largest majority given any Alcandidate in the city at dermanic, He was minority leader of the Board of Aldermen in 1908 and 1909. When Mr.

Gunther withdrew to join the court staff, he was feted by several hundred and neighbors at a dinner in which political foes joined in paying him tribute. With Mrs. Gunther, the former Alderman was again feted on Feb. 20, 1934. when the couple marked their golden wedding anniversary.

Mr. Gunther was a member of Minerva Lodge, 792 F. A. M. and Damascus Commandery, K.

T. Masonic services will be held on Monday night in the chapel, 187 So. Ox-ford St. and followed by religious rites at which the Rev. William Brown, pastor of St.

Matthew's Lutheran Church will officiate. Interment on Tuesday will be in Lutheran Cemetery. Mr. Gunther is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Gunther and two sisters, Mrs.

Anna Michenfelder and Mrs. Louise McGookin. Ex-Lt. Gallagher, Police Aide, Dead Old City of Brooklyn Roundsman, 75, Joined Department in 1888 Former Police Lt. Dennis F.

Gallagher died in his home, 118 8th in his 75th year. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Lt. Gallagher was named to the department in 1888 as a member of the old City of Brooklyn roundsmen. He became a sergeant July 2, 1894, and a lieutenant on May 9, 1898, his status in the department having been retained after cansolidation. For some time Lt.

Gallagher served as acting captain. He retired on March 8, 1921. Lt. Gallagher was assigned to the old Butler St. station in 1917 when Police Commissioner Arthur Woods investigated reports that racial feeling had developed among the members of the staff.

Gallagher was a long -time parishioner of St. John's R. C. Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and also the Lieutenants Benevolent Association.

A requiem mass will be celebrated in St. Francis Xavier's R. C. Church on Monday, with interment following in Holy Cross Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, M.

Elizabeth Gallagher; a son, D. Joseph, credit manager of the New York Telephone Company; another son, William also connected with this company, and a daughter, Mrs. Harry Staley. Noted Horseman Lieutenant Gallagher was one of the two mounted sergeants to be appointed in Brooklyn. With Isaac Frank, later Alderman, he received his "yellow chevrans." His first appointment was to the old precinct at Vanderbilt and Myrtle Aves.

Later he was assigned to Fort Hamilton, Bergen St. and Butler and for a time was acting captain at Flushing Ave. station. In his younger days Lieutenant Gallagher was ano ted horseman and represented the department at riding and driving competitions, winning several prizes. Eugene V.

Connett Services Today Amagansett July 3-Funeral services for Eugene V. Connett, retired hat manufacturer who died of a heart attack in his Sommer home, home of his son, William B. Conwere to be held this afternoon at the nett, at New Vernon, N. J. Burial will be private.

Mr. Connett, who was 75, had been firm of E. V. Connett Manassociated for many years with the hattan. He had long been a member of the Union League Club and in recent years had served as chairman of its art committee.

Mrs. Mary Hafner Dies in Hospital Woodhaven Woman Was Active in PolitiesRan Boro Jewelry Store Mrs. Mary E. Hafner, active in Republican circles in Woodhaven, died last night in a local hospital after a brief illness. She was born in New York City 60 years ago, but had been a resident of Woodhaven for 33 years.

Mrs. Hafner formerly conducted the ewelry business known as Webster's, on Fulton this borough. Later she had an office at 154 Montague St. She was treasurer of the Brooklyn Business and Professional Women's Club, a member of Women's Downtown Club and the Zonta Club, both of Brooklyn, and Hillside Chapter, O. E.

S. A former county committeeman of the Queens G. O. P. organization, Mrs.

Hafner for a time was secretary to the Queens County Clerk. She also was a former president of the Women's G. O. P. Club of Woodhaven and a member of Republican units in Queens.

Eastern Star services will be held on Monday night in the home followed by religious rites. Interment on Tuesday will be in Evergreens Cemetery. Surviving are a son, Herbert, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Conry. MRS.

T.F. Ryan Believe Service Will Be Held Here for Widow of Noted Financier Special to The Eagle Lynchburg, July 3-Funeral arrangements were being made today for Mrs. Thomas F. Ryan, widow of the financier, who died in her home, Oak Ridge, in Nelson County. She was born in Bayside, L.

78 years ago, the daughter of Solomon Townsend Nicoll and Mrs. Charlotte Nicoll. She was first married to James Brown Lord, who died in 1902, and later to Cornelius C. Cuyler. When Mr.

Ryan died in 1928, leaving a fortune estimated in vicinity of $500,000,000, Mrs. Ryan retired to their estate near here. Her only son, James Cooper Lord of Southampton, L. was at her bedside when she died. Besides her son, she leaves a sister, Mrs.

William Hoes; two grandchildren and three stepsons, John Barry Ryan, Allan A. Ryan and Clendenin J. Ryan. Her brother was De Lancey Nicoll, It is believed the funeral service will be held in St. George's Church, New York City, and that the body will rest in the family mausoleum at Oak Ridge.
