Presented at the Brooklyn Strand Theater with a cast Including Charles Btckford, Owen Davis Doris Day, Paul GuiIIoylp and Emmett Vogan. "Five Steps to the Chair" has much about it that reminds you of Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy." Moreover, the film, which came to the Brooklyn Strand Theater yesterday, also reminds you of "Thou Shalt Not Kill." The first reminder furnishes the production with a more solid foundation than it could have gathered without dipping into the Dreiser technique. And so the film has gained. The second reminder is merely a natural one.

For "Five Steps to the Chair" was titled "Thou Shalt Not Kill" until recently. The trouble Is that certain portions couldn't have been changed, that some of the obvious melodrama couldn't have been eliminated. At any rate, the film play of Robert Presnell Is certainly capably acted. Charles Bickford, Paul Guil-foyle and Emmett Vogan are particularly Impressive while there is a liberal share of mortality highlighted by the murder of a young woman out on a midnight rowing date. For the delectable Ilona has i.ot only improved her Bnglish; she us added stability to her acting end even developed the range of her singing since her American bow in "Rosalie" two years ago. What is more, Miss Massey possesses a Uuider understanding of dramatics and the means of warmly and faithfully nourishing that comprehension until it flares to life.

She is even sufficient, of an asset to atone for some of Nelson Eddy's deficiencies. Nelson, as the Russian prinpe who trades his inspiring Co.Mack uniform for a student's cap and sack-coat that he may woo a cabaret singer, still reveals evidences of being stilted and uncomfortable. There Is little doubt, however, that his voice is more eloquent than it ever was, particularly when he is offering such Russian melodies as "The Song of the Volga Boatmen." The trouble with "Balalaika" is that it dawdles too long on the border of uncertainty. Finally it. decides to concentrate less on its Cinderella setting and more upon casting sympathy toward those members of the Russian nobility who have been demoted on life's scale to Parisian doormen, winc-steward and maitres d'hotel.

Charles Ruggles Is effective as a romantic aide of Eddy's. Frank as a blustering impresario it. a Russian opera, provides further flourishes of a wholesome it ure. The accompanying feature, "The ecret of Dr. Kildare," Is the third this medical series featuring ew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore.
