He renamed himself after his hair. His first jobs were as a mechanic and waiter. He entered sports as trainer to Barney Oldfield, then a bicycle rider. At the turn of the century, Curley began sports promotion in Chicago. He staged the match between Frank Gotch, then world's champion.

Go out and wrestle a livelihood from the same time he heard the violinist Max Rosen give a recital at school. This started him on this musical career. He had several teachers in the next few years, until he met Charles Hambitzer, who is credited with having "discovered Gershwin." Wrote 'Scandals' Music When he was 20 he received his first musical comedy commission from Alex Aarons. He was then introduced to George White, with the result that Gershwin wrote the music for the "Scandals" for five successive years, beginning in 1920.

His renown spread rapidly. In the next decade he turned out such musical cal comedy hits as "Of Thee I Sing," "Lady Be Good." "Tip Toes," "Oh, Kay," "Strike Up the "Funny "Shake Your "Pardon My English" and "Let 'Em Eat Cake." His "Rhapsody in Blue" was suggested by Paul Whiteman. It was first performed in the first concert of jazz given by Mr. Whiteman's in 1924 in Aeolian Hall. Mr.

Gershwin played the solo part. Mr. Gershwin often appeared at Lewisohn Stadium concerts of the Philharmonic Symphony as SOloist, composer and conductor. One program devoted entirely to his own works, given Aug. 16, 1932, attracted a record audience.

Perhaps his most ambitious work WAS the opera, "Porgy and Bess," based on the dramatized novel of Dubose Heyward. Gershwin's first motion picture contract with Fox on the production of "Delicious," earned him $100,000. Last he turned out the music for the year, -Rogers picture "Shall We Dance." About a year later, the promoter started suit to get custody of their boy, Jack, who, he alleged, had been "kidnaped" from a private school. His first wife was married to Hobart P. Swanton, Yale graduate, clubman and son of a Rochester banker.

Curley's second wife was his secretary. Mrs. Swanton sued Curley for $20,000 in 1935, claiming she had received nothing for the support of their daughter. Counsel for Curley said the promoter had taken care of the son and would have paid for the daughter's support he had been permitted to see her. The daughter had been living with Curley since 1931, it was stated in court.

Annette Kellerman was an obscure performer in the Sherman Hotel in Chicago when Curley met her. She Introduced the one-piece bathing suit at his suggestion. The suit netted a fortune for a manufacturer who cashed in on the idea. Ed Hughes, Eagle sports writer, once asked Curley: "What's the biggest thing you ever did in your life?" Curley replied: "Once I was with Harry men's circus. A young fellow began to 'pan' Yakima, where we were playing.

Mr. Tammen told him the thing he was in should always be greatest thing in the world to him." Some 700 friends of Curly gave him a testimonial dinner at the Hotel Astor on April 23. 1934, to mark his 40th anniversary as a sports promoter. Charges that couples were permitted to dance 24 hours continuously in violation of the law dura "silver slipper' dance marathon at Coney Island staged by Curley landed him in the seaside court in 1932.
