Pull-blooded Mandans of the present time live In North Dakota, but they are few in number. A century ago the Mandans were a powerful tribe, with about 1,600 members. They were friendly to Americans, and their good will was due largely to the visit which had been paid to them by the party of Lewis and Clark. The Mandan villages were made up of rounded huts. The huts were made of logs, matting and branches, with clay plastered on the outside.

In each roof was a hole from which smoke from a bonfire poured out. An old record tell us about the beds which were used inside the huts. It says: "The beds stand aizainst the wall of the hut. They consist of a square case made of skins, with a square entrance." 4 P.M. TO 7 P.M.

Several young men were chosen to help the medicine men bring rain. Each young man would take a turn standing on the top of a hut, and asking that rain should fall. Meanwhile, on the ground, one or more medicine men would bum incense and offer prayers. When this was kept up long enough, the rain would fall and the tribesmen would believe that it came because of the prayers (For history section of your scrap- BROOKLYN EAGLE ON WNBC Make a note to tune in "Metropolitan News Roundup" every Monday through Friday at 12:15 P.M. 660 on the dial 12 M.
