What buying took place was attributed to the usual evenlng up of traders for the weekend. American Telephone gained a point at the opening, selling at 159; Allied chemical sold at 171, up 1 U. S. Steel dropped point to 56, and Bethlehem opened at 68 Vt, up from the previous close. General Motors appeared on the tape with a sale of 47, up General Electric sold at 38 up and Anaconda sold at 27 down Vi on a block of 1,000 shares.

Metal Stocks Weak Most metal stocks were weak at the opening, while small advances were recorded for rails, motors, air crafts, and some Industrials. Fractional losses were found in H. L. Green, Johns Manville, Public service of New Jersey, and Electric Auto Lite, as well as in certain bulldlnt materials and equipment shares. Mid morning stock averages showed that utilities were doing better In the quiet market than rails or utilities, but movements were negligible In any case and trading remained at an extremely dull pace throughout the early trading session.

Movements were fractional and receded from slight gains made at the morning's opening.

Metal (hares showed weakness, and rails dropped under yesterday's prices. Trading was weak and spotty, but certain shares such as American Telephone held up well throughout the brief session. Ferro Enamel Corporation reported for the year 1938 net profit of $111,257, equal to 57 cents share on common, compared with net profit of $625,520, or $3.26 a common share, in 1937. UNITED GAS IMPROVEMENT COMPANY 1938 consolidated net Income $26,832,668, or 99 cents a common share, against $29,105,379, or $1.09 on common, in 1937.

Series A and Series due 1969. The Series A issue will be payable in United States funds and the Series issue in Canadian funds, the respeotive amounts of each series to be determined later. President G. Gordon Gale stated that proceeds from the sale of these bonds and 35,000 shares of the company's bVt percent preferred stock, together with a bank loan in the amount of $7,300,000, will provide funds for the calling on May 1 for payment on June 1 of the company's presently outstanding $68,014,000 first mortgage 5s, due 1956, at 104. It is expected that a group of American underwriting houses, headed by the First Boston Corporation, will underwrite the new issue.

The American group will have associated with them a group of Canadian underwriting houses who will underwrite the proposed Canadian series. Forwardings totaled 210,000 bales this week against 232, 000 last year.

Total forwardings during the season to date are 7,559, 000 bales against 8,073,000 in the corresponding period of last season. T.ie movement of American cotton Into sight totaled 97.000 bales this week against 112,000 last year. The total into sight for the season to date is 8,283,000 bales against 12, 467,000 for the corresponding period of last season. Exports of American cotton were 83.000 bales this week against 72.000 last year. Total exports for the season to date are 2, 753,000 bales against 4,631,000 for the same period of last season.

The world visible supply of American cotton is now 6,359,000 bales against 6.472,000 a week ago and 7, 275.000 at this date last year. McKesson Claims Filing Date Set Further progress In the reorganization of McKesson Robbins, was made yesterday when an order, signed by Judge Alfred C. Coxe, was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, providing that creditors' proofs of claims, other than claims for indebtedness represented by the company's debentures and proofs of stock interest, shall be filed with William J.

Wardall, trustee, on or before May 15. In accordance with the order such proofs of claim are to be filed with the tmstee at the company's offices. 155 E. 44th Manhattan. Printed proofs of claim were mailed today to all creditors, other than debenture holders.

Mr. Wardall said that it will be Impassible to publish an Income account until the auditor's report is received. The report is expected some time during the month of May.
