der Vender that the Bethesda W. C. U. was formed. The then head the Kings County W.

C. T. Mrs. M. Annabelle, came to Bay Ridge and formally opened the unit for active work.

The name Bethesda was given it in remembrance of the Holy Land pool which the angel "troubleo," as told in the gospel of St. John, Chapter 5, beginning with the second verse. The motto, suggested by Romans 5:1, is, "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves." Bethesda gets much inspiration also out of the slogan of the national body, "For God and Home and Every Land." Mrs. Van der Vender was elected the first president of Bethesda. She was an indefatigable worker for temperance and prayer was foremost in her activities.

She held a prayer service on each Monday during her incumbency as presi- dent, besides insisting on the daily noontime prayer period prescribed by the national organization. Mr. Mary Wood followed her president, and she in turn was sue ceeded by Mrs. Schmocker. The i fourth president was Mrs.

Frederick A. Drake, who held the office for nine years. During her term Bethesda v.sited the Norwegian Hospital, distributing magazines and flowers, and made hundreds of comfort kits for soldiers who went abroad Ur fight with the Allies. It also i i I J. 1 ja copal Church, 11th Ave.
