But these matters did not obscure those qualities which make her a singer of exceptional promise.

The program opened with works of Handel and Galuppl, sung In Italian. These were followed by Brahms' Vier ernste Gesange, which were the high point of the recital. A group of Debussy was somewhat out of line with the na-. ture of her voice. Some Schubert and Schumann only confirmed the fine impression she had made.

The program closed with a miscellaneous group of arranged folk songs. Felix Wolfes was the accompanist. Stokowski Conducts Concert Dividend Those who attended the NBC Symphony conoert at the Cosmopolitan Opera House last night neard Stokowski lead a discerning performance of the Shostakovich Sixth Symphony, a work not yet well known here, after the regular broadcast part of the program had been given. This is music which needs to be heard several times to appreciate and understand, for it Is less obvious in many respects than the composer's better-known Fifth Symphony which has gained considerable favor. Stokowski described the three movements in the mood3 of introspection, fantastic mockery, and gay holiday spirit and his interpretation bore out this classification.

But again, this hearing was that of an informal rehearsal, so that further comment on the work may be reserved until it is ready for more popular consumption. The orchestra had been arranged differently again, quite an expected phenomenon under the circumstances. at NOSTRA) Avt I.RX FUTBUSH 1INE TO STEIU.IH6 ST. i Stooklyn Film at Albee No matter what you heard before, Belle Starr was a Southern patriot. She loved old Missouri, Its fine homes, its culture and its people, and she finally died for them so bravely that today old Negroes doff their hats before the stumps of her burned home and tell their grandchildren what a noble woman she was. Lamar Trottl tells the story of her nobility In "Belle Starr," today's arrival at the RKO Albee. Oene Tlerney plays Belle, Randolph Scott Is her husband, Sam Starr and Dana Andrews was the damnyankee major she could have loved lf he had come from south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

History books don't agree with Mr. Trotti on Belle Starr, though. They have it on good authority that Belle was a tough one, not noble at all. They say that she Joined up with Sam Starr to do some professional soldiering and that after their Job was through they put their heads together and planned a series of robberies so efficiently that they were never caught for anything more than horse stealing. The Albee's Bel Starr Is mortified when she discovers that her husband is raiding Missouri land to pay the guerrilla band he employs to defend it against the Northerners.

If Belle had been less mortified and more historical "Belle Starr" would have been a less noble but a more exciting film. At the Albee it is a pretty but placid film about a smug Southerner whose best quality is that she's played by beautiful Miss Tlerney at the head of a nice cast, including Louise Beavers, Elizabeth Patterson and Chill Wills. "Moon Over Her Shoulder," with Lynn Bart and John Sutton, is co-featured at the Albee. H. O.

Credit her with one of the Important debuts of the season. Her recital in Town Hall last night introduced her not only as the possessor of a fine voice but also as a singer with real potentialities. She gave a great deal of pleasure to critics and audience alike. Hers la an outstanding rolce, rich, full and sure in tone, heroic in character, and operatic in calibre. Add to this fundamental asset that the singer is attractive, that she has temperament and that she has an instinctive dramatic sense, and.

it would appear that she has about everything with which to go places. Lf she is well advised and the irregularities noted in her production are corrected, Jean Watson may win an enviable place in the world of singers. The temptation presented itself last night to speculate on what operatic roles she might do successfully. There Is one matter, however, that reeds immediate attention. It is an old story: breath control.

She cut some of her notes short for want of breath last night and the full possibilities of her organ were ieft unrevealed because of her breathing. Some of her tones were By LENNY SANFORD when it stages its last performance here. In addition to the galaxy of stars, with the cast, Empire's own skating wizards, the 1940 senior pair champions, Bill and Dot Opatrny, will again thrill the crowds with their daring roller antics. With these offerings, skating interest promises to reach a new high, not only in quality of entertainment but in quantity attendance as well. Incidentally, Empire is the only rink In town that has a midnight session every Saturday night.

Figure Eight Coaches Terry Pul-vermiller and Jerry Griffin of the Bay Ridge Roller Rink staff are developing new talent at the Bay Ridge figure eight and dance club sessions.
