LACK OF GRAVE DIGGERS LEVES 23 UNBURIED The labor shortage became so serious for a Staten Island cemetery that it couldn't hire grave diggers and 23 pine coffins containing bodies were piled up in the cemetery awaiting burial, a spokesman for the park said today. Operators of the park had been summoned to court to explain and answer charges of violation of public health laws. The spokesman, a woman secretary of the company, said the "bodies came in so fast we couldn't get labor to dig the graves." She also blamed the freezing weather and said digging in the earth was "like trying to dig through cement." "With this rushing business, we had to stop taking orders for five days," she said.

"We haven't taken any orders until today we wanted the men to get caught up and get three or four graves ahead." Harry M.
