She may not have found life quite so merry as that first unforgettable season In London, but it was still good. And not every woman can remember that a famous portrait painter once said of her to a friend whom he had Just introduced: 'Of course, you knew Mrs.

Lang try?" No," said the friend, "I had never Men her," "Then," said Whistler, "you had never seen the loveliest thing that ever was. Don't tell me that you don't think her perfect. It doesn't matter what you think. She is perfect." And that seems to have been the sentiment of crowned and uncrowned heads the world over on the subject of Lily Langtry. It) UKE TO.

Women Who Ruled Hearts, of Rulers Continued from 1st Page, Id Section try's large and expensive production of "A You Like It" was held up for a month while Its social star cave in to this particularly disagreeable disease. Not only those who ruled nations, but those who ruled the world of politics, finance, literature, art and every other phase of livlng.thought Lily Langtry had everything It takes. There was the time Oscar Wilde fell asleep on her doorstep, and was only awakened by Mr.

Langtry tripping over him as he attempted to enter his own home. There were the many occasions when Mr. Gladstone felt called upon to read Shakespeare to her and offer her a little fatherly advice. There were all the painters who ever painted her and she spent quite a uttie time at tnis pleasant indoor sport although some of the paintings were never finished. Mil- lais told her she was beautiful for 85 out of 60 minutes and amazing the other fivel Watts painted her several times the last one didn't get finished.

Burne-Jones, Frank and Whistler (to whom she was "My most beautiful used up many canvases for her sake as well. Ode to Lily Oscar Wilde, when he was awake, wrote her a long, impassioned poem, visioning her as Helen of Troy. But it was a little too, too as Lily herself probably recognized. At any rate, the poet of the Sierras. Joa quin Miller, said it very neatly In much fewer words.

It Is the poem which became attached to her at once, and was remembered and quoted often. There are few who ever heard of the Jersey Lily who haven't also heard these lines: "1 all God' world a garden were, And women were but flowers, If men were bees that butted there Through endless Summer hours, 01 would hum God garden through For honey till I came to you." That was telling 'em especially when Mr. Miller had seen his inspiration only 10 minutes before he wrote the poem. But that was Lily's effect on the opposite sex. They took one look and were ready and eager to Join the crowd of her admirers.

Toasted Coast to Coast Even the ocean was no barrier to that admiration. When Lily came to America, as she did soon after she went on the stage, the welcome that greeted her rang from coast to coast. Undoubtedly a little smart press-agentlng helped it along, but she managed pretty well on her own. The town of Langtry, Texas, was named after her; whole towns turned out to witness her arrival, and to appear at the box office afterward; she was invited to meet General and Mrs. Grant.

When she went to South America, the same success was repeated, and her London seasons continued to be sell-outs to royalty and the "carriage trade" in general. In fact, she did much to break down the Victorian prejudice against the theater and Its people. Having known her then, and knowing her as an actress, conservative British society found she was little changed. No doubt many ladies remarked that the stage was where she belonged, but they nevertheless invited her to their balls and tea parties. It wasn't as If Lily claimed to be a great actress.

No, indeed. She told every one frankly Just how Uttie money she had, and how she had to go on the stage to keep the wolf from the door. Her creditors were among those who were rather insensible to her charm. So Lily continued to bask in the social spotlight, as well as the one from the wings, and enjoyed life as much as ever. Hardly any one claimed that she was a great actress, either.

They were as frank as Lily in showing that they came to see the woman who was the talk of the world. But Lily didn't mind. She liked the theater fairly well. Assemblyman Robert J. Crews declared last night at a meet lng of the 8th A. D. Regular Republican Club, 44 Sumner Ave.

"Any one ot the potential candidates now mentioned for the Repub- 1 1 a gubernatorial nomination could defeat Governor Lehman, Assemblyman Crews asserted. With Governor Lehman In retirement, he declared the Republican candidate will walk away with the victory. "Whoever the Democrats put up," he said, "their party Is going to be split wide open. A united O. O.

P. will take full advantage of the split In their ranks and will capitalize to the full on the reduction of the gasoline tax, and the reduction of the old age pension limit from 70 to 65, achieved by the Republican assembly." See New Deal Hit The Republicans, Crews said, also would profit from the increase in low bracket income taxes voted by the Democratic legislature In 1934, the failure of the Democrats to reapportion the State when they controlled both houses of the legislature, reported unrest and disunity In the Democratic Party and expected public disapproval of most of the New Deal. Among the candidates he predicted could carry the State were Senator George R. Fearon of Syracuse; Mayor Marvin of Syracuse; Supreme Court Justice Charles Lockwood and Borough President Harvey of Queens. "Harvey," he said, "was not hurt one bit by his Uff with Rldder.

In fact, It may have done his candidacy a lot of good." Both for Landon Mortimer Michaels and Benjamin Grinrod, who will represent the 10th Congressional district at the Cleveland convention, also were present at the meeting with County Leader John R. Crews, a delegate at large, Mr. Grinrod leaped aboard the Landon bandwagon, announcing he would support the Kansas governor to the hilt. Leader Crews and Michaels reaffirmed their backing ot Landon, which had 'been announced earlier this week. Mrs.

Marguerite Bergen Kuhn, who will attend the Cleveland convention as a representative of the women's auxiliary of the 8th A. D. club, said a four-foot miniature elephant, which she has displayed at two State conventions, would accompany her to the conclave. "It's going to have a big Landon streamer attached to It," she said, and I'm going to wave it for all I'm worth in the galleries."
