"One fellow," Commissioner Reimer said, "developed quite a sweater business on the island. He stole wool from the D. A. R.

and then knitted about a dozen sweaters which he sold to other aliens. Made quite a profit from lt, too." The aliens, the commissioner said, are not treated as "unwanted nobodies" on Ellis Island. "We treat them as human beings," he said, "and we want them to know that if they are deported it Isn't the end of their life. They may yet become much more successful in their mother country than they ever could be in the United States." "Funny thing about that," said Commander Moritz, smiling, "is that I learned that in the schools they started years later, my pupils became the teachers of English." On the walla in his library hang the commander's commissions bearing signatures of four different Presidents Cleveland, McKlnley, obverse of the Tercentenary half dollar and about a dozen reverses. The reason for fewer reverses was that some of the reverse designs were paired off with one or more front faces. Historic Items Consulted This array of modeling wax didnt come Into being until the sculptor consulted pages upon pages of pictures and historical information to make sure his representations were accurate. A lifetime at sea can't be left behind. Commander Albert Moritz, TJ. S.

who retired in 1905 (only to return to service for the duration of the World War), and who this week celebrated his 76th birthday, will attest to that. Sitting in the living-room of his comfortable home at 723 E. 18th surrounded by mementoes from the far-flung lands he has visited, he said yesterday: "Do I miss the sea? Oh, my, yes! I even dream of it. Sometimes I'll have a crowd of people about me, yet I'll be on shipboard receiving and giving orders." Even birthdays bring sea echoes. The Algonquin Indian who appears on the coin came out of Mr. Weinman's extensive library and from the sculpture of Adolphe A.

An Interesting sidelight was Mr. Weinman's observation that the Long Island Indian was a peaceful chap who had a long narrow face as differentiated from his Western brother who had high cheekbones and often acquired a schnozzola in profile. 44 Sketches Rejected After the 46 sketched were ready for Inspection, the art commission, the mint authorities and the Tercentenary committee were given their opportunity to pick and decide on the ultimate design. The perfection of this design has to be almost microscopic. Down to the last wisp of hair this master model and its plaster cast have to be exact.

This master model and cast get final approval, proofreading and artistic certification by the authorities. Then, Mr. Weinman said, "they take it all away from me plaster and clay lock stock and barrel." Needle Cuts Design The next step takes place In what Is described as pantographic reduction. Roughly described, a needle starts at the center of the sculptor's design. Then much in the manner of a needle on a phonograph record it moves in a paracentric motion out to the edge.

As the needle moves over every rise and depression in the sculptor's design a cutting device follows a similar path over a soft-steel surface the size of a half dollar. The astonishing part of this process is that the artist or sculptor has made his bas relief model with a maximum "depth" of one-quarter of an Inch. That Is, If one were to place a ruler across the diameter of the design from edge to edge, the deepest spot on the plaque would never be more than one-quarter of an Inch. The impression will give some notion as to what a case-hardened steel die looks like. The die then is ready to pound out one side of the coin.
