Air Force. Margaret A. McCarthy -Just Between It's a Mistake to Dictate To Friend About Her Dates By NANCY MOTTRAM (Q.) Dear Nancy quite a problem. quiet and intelligent life-of-the-party type. To invited out if I didn't arrange dates for her, I've done just that.

Recently, my steady and I fixed up a double date wi'h one of his friends, who's just as quiet as she. They went out with us several times and he told us he liked her a lot, but now she's begun to be asked out by a fellow that this boy introduced her to, and she won't even look at him now that she's seeing someone I have a friend who is She's not shy, but she's and definitely not the Since she'd never be Nancy Mottram Nancy Mottram else. I've tried to show her that she's wrong, but she won't listen to me and we've argued. What can I do to convince her that she'd be better off dating our buddy? (A.) You can take credit for starting her on the dating whirl, but you'd better realize right now that you can't plan her nights for her from now on. You wouldn't appreciate her telling you the people you could, and couldn't date.

And even though she may be the silent type, and not as popular as you, she has a mind of her own, too. Isn't it time she started handling her own problems? True, you helped her on the first step, but now that she's asked out on her own and can decide whether or not to go out, and with -whom, it's up to her to give her answer and excuses to her ex-date, your friend. And it's his male privilege to try to win her back, himself, instead of having his closest friends do it for him. THERE'S NO POINT in putting your old friendship in danger over this, either. No doubt she's grateful to you for arranging dates when she wasn't going out at all, but since she's found she can be sought after without someone pushing the lad to see her, she's gained confidence and wants to prove herself.

Forget your role of Cupid. Insisting on managing her affairs will only cause trouble, and if you accept the facts, keep on double dating with her and the other boy, there'll be better feeling all around. Tell the lad who's been left out of the picture that you're sorry, but she's making her own decisions and let him develop some assurance by picking and choosing his own dates in the future, too. If you have a school, family or friend problem, Nancy can help you. Letters are answered in this column.
