Howard Hofer Rites Wednesday Howard Hofer of 8808 Colonial Road died yesterday at the Norwegian Hospital, 4th Ave. and 46th St. He had been ill for three months. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a resident of Brooklyn for the last 60 years, Mr.

Hofer was formerly connected with the Chase National Bank. He was retired. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the E. C.

Salembier Jr. Harry S. Williams, Wireless Operator Patchogue, Dec. 12-Harry S. Williams, 72, former manager of the Western Union office in Patchogue, died yesterday in Southside Hospital, Bay Shore.

He lived at 26 Avery this village. He was a member of the Veterans of Wireless. Operatortimers of organ- his industry. Edward T. Leech, Crusading Editor Pittsburgh, Dec. 12 -Edward T.

Leech, editor of the Pittsburgh Press died in Mercy Hospital yesterday after a short illness. The 57-year-old editor, twice jailed for contempt of court for his forthright editorials, was stricken while at work Dec. 6. Hospitalized the ing day, he underwent an emergency operation for an abdominal ailment. Known "newspaperman's to his staff newspaper- as a man," Leech began his 37-yearnewspaper career as an $8-a- week cub reporter on the Denver Express and worked his way up until he became editor.

He then was only 23. Named publisher of the Birmingham Post in 1924 at 32, Leech later took over editorial direction of the Scripps-Howard morning, evening and Sunday papers in Denver, and in 1931 joined the Pittsburgh Press of which he was editor and president when he died. Capt. V. Slocum, Retired Skipper Funeral services for Capt.

Victor Slocum, 77, retired merchant marine captain who was born and reared at sea, will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Fairchild Chapel, 951 Atlantic Ave. He died Saturday at his home, 203 Lexington Manhattan. Captain Slocum was a son of Joshua Slocum, famous master land owner of clipper ships, and was born on one of his father's vessels in San Francisco harbor. His mother was a school teacher and he received most of his education aboard ship.

He became a mate of a Slocum ship when he was 15. During World War I he served in the Navy as navigating officer of the transport Monongahela. He retired shortly before World War II. He was the author of several books bearing on the sea. His wife, Mrs.

Walter Vanderveer, 75; Retired Queens Farmer Walter Vanderveer, a retired farmer and member of an 'old Brooklyn and Long Island family, died yesterday in Mary Immaculate Hospital, Jamaica, after a brief illness. He was 75 and lived in old family homestead at Metropolitan Ave. and Woodhaven Boulevard, Forest Hills Mr.

Vanderveer, a son of Jeromus Vanderveer, who died 1918, was born June 14, 1874, in the Town of New Lots, and two years later was taken to what is now known as Forest Hills, where his father operated a large farm for years. The son with his brother, the late John H. Vanderveer, also engaged in farming there for a number of years. Ireton was graduated from the Royal University of that city, and then finished his educaItion at Oxford, England and at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a naturalized American citizen and in World War I served with the army overseas as a captain. Following the armistice he was made a judge advocate of the Army and was stationed in Berlin. He served as American legal adviser to the Inter-Allied Rhineland High Commission at Coblenz. After returning to the United States he became a teacher in the law school of the University of Detroit and also in the New York Law School.

He also was un instructor in law in Boston and Chicago. He lectured extensively over the Chautauqua circuit and was the writer of various articles dealing in law. Mr. Ireton was a member of the American Society of International Law, the International Law Association of London, the Societe de Legislation Comparee, Paris, and the Delta Phi Delta law fraternity.
