12 BROOKLYN EAGLE, JULY 13, 1946 SCREEN By Herbert Cohn Bette Davis Drama Now at the Fox; Brooklyn Strand Shows 'Runaround' Bette Davis is trying her of two twin sisters, a film comeback vehicle in 1939. It to with an emotional actress but highspots not a very, scores an exciting melodramatic climax, but it fails utterly to convincing. Miss Davis is no more successful in making it persuasive than Miss Bergner was seven years ago. It's not the fault of the players, but of novelist Karel J. Benes, that "A Stolen Life" has twice failed to click.

The twins in this Benes story are Katie, a prim and considerate woman, and Patricia, alluring, selfish and flighty. Then appearances are identical; their characters are direct opposites. But the young lighthouse inspector, Bill Emerson, whom Katie loves, one day mistakes her flirtatious sister for the demure young woman he met while she was sketching at Walter Brennan's light off Massachusetts coast. How he could have been misled for more than two minutes is the first of the film's several weaknesses. But he was.

And he didn't mind. because he discovered, finally, he liked Pat Katie, and he married her. After a while, Katie and Pat are caught in a storm while sailing skiff. Pat is drowned and Katie, the good sister, is mistaken by her rescuers for Emerson's wife. She tries to go through with the mix-up, impersonating her pethe sister and trying to patch marriage which was headed for the rocks.

Emerson didn't see through her for a while, was even hopeful about her That is the second time that "A Stolen Life" doesn't make sense. Miss Davis makes Patricia hard and cynical, but with a winning charm to which even Kate succumbs at times. Her good girl is tender and naive, a rational person who tries to find solace in painting. Individually, Miss Davis' characterizations are good. They're more subtle than Miss Bergner's.

But, set in the Benes story, they count for littie. Glenn Ford is agreeable as Emerson, Dane Clark draws a sharp but exaggerated portrait of a fanatical artist who tries to make Kate a more dominant personality, and Charlie Ruggles adds an occasional and welcome dash of comedy as the sisters' quippy uncle. But "A Stolen Life" needs a more-serious operation, than Fox' they can co-feature perform. "Sing While You Dance," with Ellen Drew and Robert Stanton. At the Brooklyn Strand The idea for "The Runaround" came from the old Gable-Colbert hit, "It Happened One Night." But there's more than enough origiinality in the nw Arthur HormanSam Hellman screenplay, which started its second metropolitan run this morning at the Brooklyn Strand Theater, to make it a bub- "SUPERB, CINEMATIC SPECTACLE" N.

It is fast, cute and funny. The Strand's associate feature is "God's Country," with Robert Lowery, Helen Gilbert, William Farnum and Buster Keaton. "Runaround" hops by air, rail and a broken-down jalopy while its smart "private eye" looks for a pretty New York socialite who has flown her cozy family coop to keep a San Francisco rendezvous with an itinerant sailor. And the smart detective, played by Rod Cameron in the style of Randolph Scott, gets plenty of action in his assignment for one of his competitors, tricky Broderick Crawford, quick to throw a right-handed haymaker, is also on the trail of the elusive young lady, planning to be the man to take her home and collect the reward. While "Runaround" has its moments of excitement and suspense, Cameron plays it for laughs.

He makes it pleasant. Ella Raines, the pouting heiress, isn't quite so suchow to as usual, is cessful. Occasionally, she forgets blustery and despite his role. And a supporting cast is full of nice actors who add bits of winning humor at stop-over cities from; coast to See "Runaround" from the beginning. It has trick ending you wouldn't want to know about in advance.

The Stage Relief Fund has completed its 14th season, in which eight benefit performances of Broadway hits grossed $27,984 for a record average of $3,498 per play.
