In the summing up, the most obvious fact about the season is balancing of the repertory. Total figures on the number of times a single opera was performed are somewhat deceiving.

The overall figuring would place "Carmen" at ten, 'Barber of Seville" at seven, nd "Gioeonda" and "La Boheme" at six performances each. In the case of "Carmen" and "Barber of Seville" the totals are swelled Dy special performances for school children. Otherwise the figures or the various operas show an unusual stability, thus making a successful attempt to concentrate less on the number of operas per-lormed and more on the quality of the performances. This is an achievement deserving further comment. The presence of five performances each for "The Magic Flute," 'Die Meistersinger," 'The Masked Ball" and "Don Giovanni" among others is enough to disclose a definite policy of encouraging wider acceptance of several works such as these.

But probably the major artistic accomplishment is the fact that it was possible to have five performances of "The Masked Ball" and four performances of Fidelio a record which will reqime considerable investigation to natch. Nothing could bt more gratifying than to find public response to these works appear as strong as those far more familiar. The nine revivals included "Tannhaeuser," "Tales of Hoffmann," "Romeo and Juliet," "Th Masked Ball" and "Otello" of Verdi, "Tosca," "II Tabarro" and "Madame Butterfly" of Puccini, and "Don Pasquale." The emphasis on strengthening the Italian ving with the majority of these revivals becomes more interesting the light of only three performances for "Tristan and Isolde" and only two for "Walkure." both of which have usually held the ooards for at least five performances during the season. Eleven new singers appeared during the season: the sopranos, Pierrette Alarie, Mary Henderson, Dorothy Kirsten and Fiorenza Quartararo; the tenors Thomas Hayward, Torsten Ralf and Ramon the baritones, Joel Berglund and Robert Merrill; the basses, Wellington Ezekiel and Giacomo Vaghi Of these, Torsten Ralf, Joel Berglund and Robert Merrill won immediate favor, while the others showed varying degrees of promise. Other members returning to the company included: Jussi Bjoerling, Julius Huehn and Arthur Kent.

So much for statistics. Comment on the general character of the season must be reserved for an opportunity when space and time allow.
