Y. He retired in 1912. for many year's in civic philanthropic organActive, izations in Brooklyn, he served for a quarter century as chairman of the governing committee of the Brooklyn Museum. He was a director of the Brooklyn Children's Aid Society, the Brooklyn Music School Settlement. the Italian Settlement of Brooklyn the Brooklyn Public Library.

He also was a trustee of Storm King School lat Cornwall. During World War I Mr. Crittenden served as a member of Draft Board 26 here. He also served as Government appeal agent to the board. Mr.

Crittenden was born in Cleveland. Ohio, the son of Seth Whittemore Crittenden and Cornelia Goldthwaite Crittenden, and was a descendant of William Bradford, first Governor of Plymouth Colony. He attended Utica Free Academy in Utica. N. and was 1 graduated from Amherst College in 1881.

Two years later he received his law degree from Columbia University, Law School and then law Walter H. Crittenden From painting by Wilford S. Conrow. offices in New York City, where he practiced for nearly 60 years. From 1918 to 1920 Mr.

Crittenden was president of the Rembrandt Club of Brooklyn. His other club affiliations included the Twentieth Century Club. the Hardware Club, the Hamilton Club and the Century Association of New York. He also was active in many Brooklyn charitable institutions. His wife, the former Lillian Haines, died several years ago.

John's Place, died 011 Wednesday. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1900, and from 1905 to 1907 was assistant librarian at Amherst College. Coming to Brooklyn in 1908, he served first as assistant reference librarian of the Brooklyn Public Library, and in 1911 became reference librarian, a post he held until 1929. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi. He retired a number of years ago.

Surviving are his widow. Mrs. Agnes Drake Foss; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph S. Bender and Christine Foss: two sisters, Mrs.

Newman H. Seldon and Mrs. Mark A. Davis, and two brothers, George and Ervin H. Foss.

515 Rockaway rom which place the funeral wil be held tomorrow. Burial will be in the National Cemetery at Pinelawn. Colonel Lawrence. who lived at 165 Cochrane Place. died Tuesday in Mount Alto Veterans Administration Hospital, Washington.

He was a student at the University of Dayton when he enlisted as A private in World War He was wounded in the Argonne offensive and was discharged with the rank lieutenant. In 1928 he moved to Valley Stream where he became active in the State Veterans Foreign Wars organization. He was elected Nassau County Commander in 1934, and in 1938 was elected New York State com' mander. At the start of World War I Colonel Lawrence, who at first was denied combat duty because of his age, resigned as veterans' representative of the 2d Civilian Defense Region, and became commander of the combat engineer battalion of the newly developed "ducks." that capacity he took part in amphibious landings in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and southern France. He received his discharge from the army as lieutenant colonel.

He was the holder of the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Invasion Ar. rowhead and eight battle stars. Besides the widow, Mrs. Mary Lawrence, he is survived by a son, Paul S. Lawrence and a daughter, Mary Anne Lawrence.

Emma L. Feeney, Nutrition Expert Reprinted From Yesterday's Late Editions Professor Emma L. Feeney, head nutrition department of the School of Home Economics at Pratt Institute, died yesterday (Wednesday) in her home at Ballston Lake, N. it was learned here today. Miss Feeney was a member of the faculty of the borough institute since 1923 and has been professor of nutrition since 1913.

Born in Ballston Lake, a daughter of Mrs. Walter C. Feeney and the late Mr. Feeney, she attended Ballston Lake High School and was graduated from Middlebury College. Later she received the degree of Master of Science from Teachers College, Columbia University.
