The vivacious Brooklynlte, who has turned out more than 400 paintings at his home, 1570 E. 14th said it all began while he was recuperating from an operation.

"The doctor told me to do something with my hands," he said, "so I tried painting." A former facial specialist who treated skin conditions, Sommer said he painted for quite some time before he was "dis covered." I finally took $5." Works Widely Exhibited Since then, however, business and reputation has grown. Sommer has exhibited his work in various galleries and is even going international, having been invited to show his works at the Canadian National Exhibit next Fall. His brilliant color technique and "naive" flair for detail have prompted critics to acclaim him one of the top "young" con temporary primitivists. His subjects, mostly landscapes, are drawn "strictly from memory," he said no models." Born in Roumania in 1881, Sommer came to this country when he was 16.

Since then he has been a pocketbook manufacturer, a real estate agent, a hotel owner, an insurance agent, a farmer and a skin specialist.
