FRI MAY 16, 1947 10 Brooklyn and Broadway NIGHT LIFE By LEW SHEAIfER It JP" 1 The alr-esBdllloned ASTOR HOOF A SHOW TO MATCH THE VIEW Bill Miller has done right by his Riviera words that sound offhand like flat, grudging approval, but actually are high praise. Fine HOTEL ASTOR TIMES SQUARE I THE QUEENS JESTER Wing dwarfed by the sweep, lav ish beauty and colorful site of the famed waterfront club. And that challenge successfully met.

Mr. Miller, with a prodigal hand, lined up a big splash of a show to reopen the club. For laugh, Jackie I Miles; lor songs. Gracie Barrie; for exotic novelty, Beatrice Kraft; for excitement, the Stuart Morgan adagio troupe, and a.s other specialists, a round dozen of dancing beau Jackie Miles ties and half-a-dozen luscious show girls all staged by Donn Arden at a slick pace with vivid production values. On opening night a good slice of Broadway and show business helped Jam the place to overflow, palm-pound their approval of the hour-and-a-haU show and crowd the dance floor, especially when Ralph Font's Band gave out with superio' and spirited Latin-American rhythms.

Getting back to the show, Jackie Miles displayed the easy-does-it form that has made him one of. the outstanding comics to emerge in recent years. He's a slight little fellow with a big talent and plenty of chaim. Underneath his casual, laugh-ot-don't-laugh approach is a splendid sense of timing. At the midnight show he was a little too casual in getting started, but soon had the laughs snowballing along, not to mention the noisy crowd in the palm of his hand, when he hit his true stride in his classic Gene Autry routine.

Telling about his Miami Beach experiences last Winter he pulled out a line that'll get wide circulation: "What prices! My hotel charged S35 a day. Who could sleep so good!" It's a toss-up naming the featured act drawing the biggest hand, but this column takes Miss Kraft for its favorite. Her finished dance technique, sly humor and individualistic style all get full play in fast-footed numbers to jazzed-up Oriental tunes. Miss Barrie, while lacking the final spark that makes a star, does a handsome job on widely contrasting songs, matching her personality to their various moods with easy showmanship. And, finally, the Stuart Morgan girl and I three men give as breath-taking a 'display of adagio daring as you'll find anywhere.

Tony Bavaar, a good-looking chap of mellow voice, sings the production numbers, and Ray Ma- lone, a breezy youngster, is the specialty dancer. Joel Herron cuts the show and supplies straight dance music to alternate with Ralph Font's rhumbas. MOTEL BOSSERT Busy at choies of scrubbing the deck, painting and getting the hurricane lamps in ship-shape are landlubbers at the hotel's Marine Roof, which reopens next Tuesday.
