BROOKLYN EAGLE; FEB. 18, 1948 11 SCREEN By Ltw Sheaffer Brooklyn and Broadway NIGHT LIFE (rt By AL SALERNO Steinbeck's 'Pearl' Is Rich Fare; 'T-Men' Packs Excitement at the Fox In his best "The Pearl," John Steinletk's mupatron-lzing affection and respect for the 'disinherited found its slm-et, most poetic form. The story of a poor Mexican pearl iliver who found the largest pearl in the world, thereby raising CHINESE AHEAD IN FOOD DERBY Include me among those who believe the Chinese do more with and get more out of food than any other race. I will admit I recently switched my allegiance, and this was done after a visit to the uptown establishment of that eminent Can lounge and renamed them Newspaper Nook. There are nine booths, each bearing plaque with a reproduction of the masthead of one of the following: Brooklyn Eagle, Times, Tribune, News, Mirror, World-Telegram, Post, Journal-American and Sun.

I suggest one addition that each booth be supplied with a ropy of the paper after which it is named. Changed daily, of course. Another new band makes Hta New York debut tonight when Claudia Carroll and her all male orchestra open at the Green Room In Hotel Edison on W. 46th St. Irwin -youthful operator of the hostelry, claims credit for having discovered her, and brought her on from the West Coast' for a short run at the Edison.

FASHION PLATES, DEAR ME Basil Rathbone, "best dressed" stage star in "The Heiress," takes time out to discuss fashion with Helen Fraser, director of Barbizon models. Miss Fraser is a Bay Ridge girl. a storm, of greed and evil in his village, was made to order for hi sympathies and talent. The utory was also made to order for the screen, evidently. It has inspired a powerful, haunt-Ingly beautiful movie.

Original credit for "The Pearl," which opened yesterday at the Sutton, goes to Mr. Steinbeck, of course, but a large part belongs to our friends across the border. The film was made in the only way that it could be made right in Mexico, with an all-Mexican rant. And it was directed by Mexico's Emilio Fernandez, who "also collaborated on the screen play with Mr. Steinbeck.

The dialogue, let It be noted at this point, is in English. "The Pearl" is based on an actual legend that has been handed down for generations among the natives of California, the legend of Kino, his wife Juana and their baby son and how they lived to regret that Kino ever found the pearl. Kino and Juana lived, that is; the baby was -killed as a result of the evil stirred up by the discovery. SPECIAL PREVIEW TODAY Set special showing of "JASSY" 3:30, 6:50, 10:05 PM or 1:20 AM plus regular showinj ol "A WOMAN'S VENGEANCE" Dinner Includes soup, egg roll or breaded shrimps, dessert and tea, and with chicken chow costs $1.25. Other entrees, which determine price of the dinner, are shrimp fried rice, roast pork with vegetables, or tender beef chop suey, spare ribs, shrimps with lobster sauce, braised cluck and Subitum chicken chow 1 excellent or lobster, Canton style, at $2.35.

One can also order a la carte, The genial Oriental has ca tered to many prominent per sons in all walks of life in Lum Fong's (the place) two decade of food dispensing. Lum Fong (the person) introduced to the American eating public a number of dishes now to be found on every Chinese menu, and concocted numerous exotic sounding cocktails. Manager of the uptown branch is James Lee, head- waiter Is Tippy Wong. Both es timable gentlemen have, in ad' dition, private callings which may or may not be profitable-it isn't polite to ask but which for purposes of ending this tale, are reasonably valuable. Wong, of the retentive mem ory, is also noted for th Chinese lyrics he has composed HOLLYWOOD Well, Sam Goldwyn went and done It again.

His recent statement about cutting salaries at his studio was a bit more elegantly worded than the usual specimen of Goldwynism (such as, "I want my workers to say what they really think, even If Extra hours to as I shocking as I was i beautiful Tn the end, after they had been hunted through swampland like animals, after Kino had killed three men in self-defense, after the baby had died, they gave the pearl back to the sea. Kino was too unworldly to meet the problems it brought. There was no peace or joy in the pearl. In outline, the story is grim and yet this is not a grim picture. The outline cannot suggest the pictorial magnificence with which it is handled, the way the camera caresses the Mexican countryside and Mexican face for some memorable photography.

It cannot suggest the unselfish joy of Kino's friends over his good fortune and the joyous fiesta they threw to celebrate. It leaves out such homey, tenderly humorous things as Kino and Juana laughing like children when they look through a magnifying glass for the first time or the peddler's sign at the fiesta: "Shoes four cents per dance." Most of all. it leaves out the warmth and vitality of the people, qualities that give the picture depth and make it more than just a parade of pictorial splendor Pedro Armendariz and Maria Elena Marques, as Kino and Juana. are perfect. They seem I to live the roles, rather than i play them.

The same goes for the entire cast. At the Fox To say that "T-Men" opened at the. Fox today is the prize understatement of the week, rt didn't "open." It exploded. This Eagle-Lion thriller about Treasury Department sleuths is strong meat and just what the doc ordered for action fans with healthy nerves. The other feature is ''Love From a Stranger," an obvious and heavy handed psychological melodrama.

Made with the department's co-operation and based on its own, true-life skirmishes with the underworld, "T-Men whips up no end of excitement and suspense In its fight to smash a counterfeiting ring. Dennis O'Keefe and Alfred Ryder, Treasury agents, impersonate racketeers, worm their way in as members of the suspected gang, ana the cnase is on, a chase that piles action upon ac tion and runs smack into one climax after another until the breathless end. Every once In a while "T-Men" remembers its official sponsorship and pauses to give the story a documentary flavor, but this doesn't happen often. It is more interested in thrills and tension, and it gets them. O'Keefe and Rvder turn in good, realistic jobs, with able support from Wally Ford, Mary Meade, Charles McGraw and others.

They don't come any rougher or tougher than "T- Men." "Love From a co- starring Sylvia Sidney and John Hodiak. concerns a de mure English, girl who wins $200,000 on a sweepstake ticket and marries a strange chaR after a whirlwind courtship. I have been steadily moving toward the opinion expressed above, as a result of dining sessions at some of the town's well-known and not-too-well-known Chinese restaurants.

The affable Lum Fong, wise in his own way, probably realized what was happening perhaps from the eagerness with which I prepared for the meal. He must have said to him self: "I'm gonna convert this fellow, now." We started with a Lotus Blossom cocktail raised more steam with Won Ton soup, and got under way with the famous egg roll, crisp and hot. For main courses we sampled the Wor Shew Opp, or braised, duck. The Long Island fowl never showed to better advantage. There was also Lung-Ha-Gai-Kew, a com bination of lobster meat, chicken, beef, chicken livers, selected vegetables, baked kreplach, all floating In a delicious sauce.

On the side we had pork fried wke. I am raising- no great, or new, question by placing the Chinese to the fore in the food derby any persons, ages ago reached that same conclusion Nor have I made any sort of discovery in Lum Fong's newer place. He was discovered more than 20 years ago when his four-storied landmark on Canal St. opened its doors, a move that was to bring national prominence to Mr. Fong.

Eight years ago he branched out to j2nd below 7th and the modern room has become a mecca for chow mein enthus iasts.
