JIMMY WW lJJ MURPHY'S COLUMN Erasmus Eleven In Quest of Title Flatbush Combine Plays Host To Far Rockaway Tomorrow By JAMES J. MURPHY 7 Coach Joe Monahan's Buff and Blue clad warriors of Eras mus Hall High School will make an attempt to move one step nearer the P. S. A. L.

football championship of New York City when they square off in the arena at Boys High Field tomorrow with Far Rockaway High School of Queens County. The open VJ Allen Sulkis, left, and Dom which opposes Far Rockaway ing kickoff is down for 2 p.m. In the other game that graces the schoolboy grid calendar tomorrow, Adelphi Academy will hie out to Nassau County to get its action against Friends Academy at Locust Valley. That battle of punts, passes and runs will come off at 3 p.m. There are onlv six public high schools playing football in Pappy Knickerbocker's confines this season and the Flvine Dutchmen from Flatbush have already knocked off three of them, De Witt Clinton, John Adams and Curtis.

If the Big uray scnooi, over which Dr. John McNeill presides as princi pal, can hurdle the Seahorses from the seashore resort all that will stand between it and the title is the Stuyvesant Peglegs, whom Monahan once mentored to a city championship. Unbeaten Eleven Erasmus Hall, with its three straight, is one of the unbeaten teams in the city. Far Rockaway has won but once in five at- temps, the triumph being a big Ujpset over John Adams by a more substantial score than the Buff and Blue won. The last time out, the invaders from Queens, ably coached by Irving Resnick, for mer James Madison All-Scholas- Geller Sets Poly Harrier Record Henri Geller of Poly Prep finally broke his school record in cross-country as he led the Blue and Gray to a 2134 decision In a dual meet with Trinity School of Manhattan yesterday over the Dyker Heights institution's trail.

Geller wad clocked 11:29 as compared to the old mar kof 11:45 made by EXCELLING AGAIN Bob Bello of the Bay Ridge Imps, leading the 170-pound division in the Bay Ridge Football League with a record of three triumphs without defeat and one tie, is playing another bang up offensive and defensive game this season. His sterling efforts a year ago won him the most valuable player award. Al Lubisco, coach of the Imps, played with the Bay Ridge Phantoms when they won the championship of the Farade Grounds League in 1939-40. He engaged in independent ball with success for a couple of years thereafter. Lubisco's assistant is George Cicero, erstwhile All-Scholastic star of Lafayette High School in 1941-42.

In addition to schooling the line, Cicero doubles in brass as the' trainer. The Abraham Lincoln fencing team has been offered the use of the X. Y. U. facilities to keep in shape in the event the coaches' stoppage of extracurricular activities until a SG00 raise is granted, is settled.

The presence of many Honest Abes op the Violet's fencing team no doubt prompted the generous offer. They are Captain Xorman Lerner, Ike Sanders, ex-leader, and Sheldon (Shorty) Taylor, former captain at Lincoln for two years. The mainstays of the current Lincoln team are Captain Stanley Zinberg and Assistant Captain Gerald Goldstein. STRONG NET FORCE If the coaches mixup is over lv Spring, Abraham Lincoln High will be able to put out strong contender for the Brooklyn P. S.

A. L. tennis championship. Available for action are Co-Captains Tony Holtz-man. Murray Vogel and Eddie Lebow.

Martin Pearl, ex-captain of the Coney Islanders, who was invited to play with the Metropolitan Junior Davis Cup team last Summer, is now attending Lehigh University. One of the most disappointed men in Brooklyn this Fall is Jackie Kerchman, former grid great of Abraham Lincoln and Syracuse University. He returned to Brooklyn after coaching in the West to assist Henry Kahan with the Honest Abes, oniy to have the teachers' strike prevent the fielding of a team. PLAYING FOR ITHACA One Brooklyn and two Long Islanders will be in the lineup when Ithaca College tackles Champlain College at home tomorrow afternoon. They are Calvin YVedderburn, son of Mrs.

Marion R. Wedderburn of 7P.2 Hancock Martin H. Albert of Babylon, and Edward F. Herman of YVoodside. Two of the stellar players of the Xavier High School football team of a year ago are studying to be Jesuits at St.

Andrew's-on-the-Hudson, Poughkeepsie. They are John McGowan and Nicholas Cushner, guard and end, respectively. Cushner was also a crack basketball performer. The Cadets' grid luminaries of a year ago are pretty well scattered. Charley Pickney and Joe Babinski, tackles; John Schneider and Jim Cunneen, ends, and Gerry Bowers, fullback, are on the Freshman team at Fordham University.

Harry Fletcher, center, and Joe Burgstresser, who captained the Xavier forces in 1949, are at Marianapolis Prep in Connecticut. Joe is co-captain of the prep eleven. PERFORMING IN COLLEGE Former Cadets Jimmy Butler and Henry Lavery, tackle and quarterback, are at Niagara and Villanova, respectively. Vic Stronski, a center, matriculated at Queens College, where they have no football team. Jack Lynch, a halfback hailing from Flushing, is at St.

Peter's College in Jersey City along with Jack Conway of Jackson Heights and Bob Tormey of Richmond Hill, who is taking pre-med. Three more of Xavier's grid operatives are on the yearling outfit at Holy Cross College. They are Tom McGovern. Paul Rollinsright, a halfback from Valley Stream, and Tommy Muss, a fullback hailing from Great Neck. COACH IS CONFIDENT Coach Murtha Lawrence entertains a sneaky feeling that his Brooklyn Prep crosscountry team will march off with the Class title in the Fordham University interscholastic hill and dale run Saturday morning over the Van Cortlandt Park two and a half mile layout.

Of course, it all depends on whether his two ailing harriers, Don Rooney and Joe Leahy, feel up to snuff. The other standard bearers of the Crown Heights Eagle will be Captain Warren Ring, Ray Di Napoli, Bill Callahan, Frank Caton and Vinnv Bowen. Red Cross Lists Free Evening Swim Courses Continuing its campaign to "waterproof" Brooklyn against drownings and accidents in the water, the Brooklyn Red Cross Chapter's Water Safety Service today announced a new series of free evening courses for Brooklynites who would like to learn to swim. The courses are given in co-operation with the Board of Education. The classes, conducted at the Board of Education Community Centers in six high schools, are scheduled as follows: Beginning Monday, Nov.

Bob Needham of Trinity was second in 13:37. Geller has been making a reg ular practice of fracturing course standards this season. He lowered the Lawrenceville record by 14 seconds beating Hamill home, and also set a new target for the hill and dalers of the future to shoot at, in Peddle School in Highstown, N. J.

He also won in the recent N. Y. U. interscholastic run. While Geller was doing his stuff, the Poly Prep soccer eleven was bowing to Pingry School in Elizabeth, N.

2 to 0. It was Pingry's second win against three losses and a tie. Poly Prep's record is 32. It was the first shutout of the season for goalie Ron Dreesen of the victorious side. With 10 minutes of the second quarter gone, Pete Jasper toed to Gordon Lenci, who in turn, passed to Al Fyfe, but the latter's boot hit one of the uprights and rebounded to Miller Buglari, who kicked the first goal.

I In former years the public high schools of the borough have had the home of the Dodgers to themselves as far as bar gain bills are concerned. However, that is all out this season with the public high school grid coaches' stoppage of extracurricular activities until a SGOO raise is forthcoming.

The double attraction should go over big as this borough is really football hungry. Only one high school game has been played in Ebbets Field thus far this campaign and that a nocturnal fracas in which Rrook- yn Prep took a fine thrashing from its arch foe, Xavier High of Manhattan. Every time St. John's Prep and the Gaels from New Jersey tangle they always manage to put on a thriller diller. Their meetings have been replete with action from the opening to the closing whistle.

Evenly Matched A year ago St. Francis Prep and lona battled to a sensational 6 tie in New Rochelle. Their setto this Fall should develop an encore of excitement, as the rivals are pretty evenly matched. As tuneups for the double-header, St. Francis Trep will collide with a powerful Cardinal Hayes Memorial High aggrega tion at Tnborough Stadium on Randalls Island, Sunday after noon, and St.

John's Prep will engage in its annual Election Day fixture with John Adams High at Dexter Park. Monahan is sticking pat with the lineup that has been so successful thus far. Of the 32 points scored by the Flatbush seat of secondary education, George (Lucky) Lawrence has contributed 21.
