Talking about show business brought another thing to his confidential state of mind: Pet Prrve "A pet peeve of mine is the so-called new look in eye makeup.

Maybe the reason is due to the fact that I am around heavily-made-up people all day and most of the night. But when I go out I want to feel that 1 am with a natural, down-to-earth sort of girl, who doesn't have to rely on artificial methods to make herself attractive. I don't like my girl to look like she is ready to step out on a stage to give a performance when she goes out with me." "I also like a girl that is more or less on the quiet side," he continued, "because I am like that myself. A who is a complete extrovert usually is a little frightening. Besides I always have the feeling that a girl who tries to be the life of the party and to gain everyone's attention lacks something in herself." Well, there you have it girls.

A fiRartr? ms Design Students Chinese silks of the Manchu Dynasty, arranged in special displays to show their influence on Occidental design, make up the new exhibition at the Scala- mandre Museum of Textile 20 W. 55th Manhattan.

The exhibit is a comprehensive review assembled with the object of showing the various phases of Chinese textile designs. Printed charts with complete resumes of the history of Chinese silk, together with the significance of the symbolic meanings of the floral, animal and geometric motifs comprising the intricate patterns, enlighten and add to their interest. Rich and colorful lampases, velvets, damasks and embroidered textiles comprise the exhibit. Then, too, these are the beautiful European silks inspired from them and the reproductions which have been woven and printed by Seala-mandre. The- printed toiles showing the Chinese influence are another feature of the presentation.

The lure of Chinese textiles to the Western world extends back before the Christian era. The demand for them has ex tended up to the present time The memorable journey of Marco Polo in the late 13th century and the fabulous tales he told upon his return from old Cathay aroused a new inter est in the Chinese and their arts. Thev were the inspiration of the European artists and de signers. In Italv the Venetians incorporated Chinese motifs with those of the late Gothic and early Renaissance of the 14th century into composite patterns peculiarly their own. When the sailing vessels of Portugal, Holland, England and France established direct trade with China in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries a new impetus was given to the demand for textiles and treasures from the Far East.

It was during the Louis XV period that the flare for chinoiseries reached its zenith in France. Famous French designers and artists, such as Pillement, Ma-rot, Boucher and Wattcau, cre- a ted beautiful and whimsical designs depicting Chinese life as, they imagined it. Ober-kampf's printed chinoiserie toiles de Jouy became the vogue. English Interpretation The eighteenth century per iod of Chinese Chippendale in the mid-Georgian period of the English Interpretation of Chi nese design comprises another interesting section. These are the textiles that blend so beautifully with the mahogany furniture of the Colonial days of America.

During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centurieso of our republic, known as the Federal period, American mer chant ships sailed the "Seven Seas." The advent of the clipper ship era saw the rise of wealthy merchants. Thev built their beautiful mansions along uie r.ngianu toasi. 11 uik furnishings of their homes, Chi- nese silks and art treasures taken from their returning cargoes were proudly displayed and used in combination with the mahogany furniture. The Eastern and Western arts blend beautifully together in interior decoration and are as popular today as they were in the time of our forefathers. The modern trend has not been overlooked in the exhibition.

Textiles with designs derived from the Chinese geometric forms are also shown. The mo tifs of the swastika, fret and intricate all-over meander de signs are given a modern feel ing by being woven w-ith the heavily knotted boucla yarns ftfiiom si nan ttimcti uit umms BROOKLYN HURRY TO NAMM'S FOR THE Holiday Fashion Show for SEnb-tceners 1 THE OBLIQUE LOOK of new Paris fashions inspires a new scarf tie-way: a lustrous silk-satin scarf by Glentex is worn swept across one shoulder.
