Carey cratlc leader of the 10th AD. for 17 years and under his leadership the district, which was formerly predominantly Republican, became a Democratic stronghold. For many years his Brooklyn home was at 632 Carlton Ave. He retired in February of last year. Services Are Held For Frank Gerard Patchogue, May 13 Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for Frank Louis Gerard, 53, of Circle Court, who died Friday, The Rev.

William J. Weeks of the Blue Point Baptist Church, officiated and burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mr. Gerard, who was born here, was employed by the American Express Company for 35 years before he retired last January. He Is survived by his widow, Emma L.

Gerard; two daughters, Miss Marguerite Gerard and Mrs. Ella Zegel; two sons, Sidney and Robert Gerard two brothers, Joseph A. and Arthur Gerard, and three sisters, Mrs. Laving Kordes, Mrs. Anna Stokem and Miss Jessie Gerard.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Gerard. Henry W. Thayer La Jolla, May 13 U.R Henry W.

Thayer, 73, architect of the original Madison Square Garden in New York City, died yesterday. He came here eight years ago from Brooklyn. His wife, Elizabeth, and daughter, Mrs. William R. Smith, survive.

WHEN OUT OF TOWN REGISTER FROM BROOKLYN I VI VI I lUIIUyUllf VI Ex-Court Attendant Served Under 4 Judges Saved 60 Drowning Persons From Surf Peter Flanagan, who served as a court attendant at the Brooklyn Surrogate's Court for 45 years under four Surrogates, died Saturday at his home, 844 70th St. He was 84. Mr. Flanagan retired In 1935. He Was a native of Manhattan and for many years spent his Summers at Rockaway Beach.

A powerful swimmer, it is estimated that he had made more than 60 rescues from the surf. He was presented with a gold medal for one of these acts. Saved Four In One Day One day in 1910 he brought four people ashore and the previous day rescued two others. Mr. Flanagan was born in Manhattan and lived the greater part of his life in Brooklyn.

He was a member of Morning Star Council, K. of C. Philadelpos Council, R. and the Knights of Columbus Veterans. Surviving are his widow, Mrs.

Julia V. Flanagan, and four children. Joseph, Peter Gerard and Mrs. Hilbert Nelson of Amityville. The funeral will be held from the chapel at 187 S.

Oxford with a solemn mass of requiem at St. Ephrem's R. C. Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be In Holy Cross Cemetery. J. Mitchell Burns, Father of Banker Riverhead, May 13 Funeral services will be held at the home Tuesday at 2 p.m. for J. Mitchell Burns, 91, pioneer resident, who died last right at his home on Osborne Ave.

His death was attributed, indirectly, to a fall in his home Wednesday night, when he suffered a fractured arm. Surviving are his wife, Catherine; a daughter, Mary, and four sons, George president of the River-head Savings Bank; Milton former Riverhead Township supervisor; Harold E. and William, all of Riverhead. Burial will be In Riverhead Cemetery. Mr.

Burns and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last November. Sir Ralph S. Paget London, May 13 (IP) Sir Ralph Spencer Paget, 75, first British Ambassador to Brazil, died at St. Raphael, France, last Saturday, it became known today. Day, poet and writer, and one of the oldest graduates of Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, who died Saturday. She was 80. Miss Day, who was graduated from Packer In 1879, was a member of the Associate Alumnae of Packer Collegiate Institute. A native of Ohio, she moved with her family to Brooklyn In 1872. Her father, Timothy Day, was a Representative In Congress during the Civil War and owner of the Cincinnati Enquirer, in which he wrote the famous column "Letter From the Man on the Hilltop." In 1913 Miss Day received the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Science's medal for her poem, "The Battle of Long Island." Her principal poetic works are "From May Robert P.

McGee, Ex-Coal Merchant Prominent Mason Retired 4 Years Ago Funeral services for Robert Patterson Magee. 59, formerly of Bay-s'de, who died Friday at Miami Beach, will be held tomorrow afternoon at Baltimore. Mr. Magee was sales manager of the firm of Madeira, Hill in coal merchants of Manhattan, before he retired about four years ngo. A native of Baltimore.

Mr. Magee at one time was associated with the Baltimore Si Ohio Railroad In Baltimore arid Pittsburgh. He was with the coal concern for about 20 ears. Active in Masonry, he was past master of Bayside Lodge, F. A.

Murphy, Of Boro Water Firm Freeport, May 13 A requiem mass will be sung Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Our Holy Redeemer for Daniel J. Murphy of 5 Nassau who died at his home Saturday night of pneumonia. He was born In Ireland 66 years ago, but had lived In this country for 52 years. Mr.

Murphy had been in the employ of the Brooklyn Water Works for 25 years and was to have retired soon. He was a member of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus; the Holy Name Society of his church and other Catholic organizations. His wife died several years ago. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Schott; a son, William M.

Murphy, and several grandchildren. Burial will be in Holy Rood Cemetery. Showers Threaten, Says Weatherman Blue Monday justified its gloomy self today with dull skies and threats of rain after a Mother's Day that was bright with sunshine but chilled by a northerly breeze. He was admitted to the hospital yesterday. Although Mr. Carey's home was at he had been living recently with relatives at 89-73 312th Mace, Queens Village. Mr. Carey had been failing In health since the death of his wife, Frances Bates Bannc-.

Carey, who died on March 20 from the effects of a heart attack which she suffered while driving an automobile. Funeral to Be Held Here Arrangements are being made to hold the funeral from the William A. Martin Funeral Chapel at Clas-son Ave. and Sterling Place, In St. Teresa's parish, where Mr.

Carey lived for many years before establishing his residence at Lynbrook after his retirement from active public life. John F. Lantry, the Democratic leader of the 10th A. who succeeded Mr. Carey In the party leadership Jan.

20, 1938, said the funeral would be held probably on, Thursday. Mr. Lantry was deeply moved when word of his predecessor's death reached him. He said he was informed yesterday of Mr. Carey's illness and planned to visit him in the hospital today.

Frank V. Kelly, the Democratic county loader, expressed his sorrow when word of Mr. Carey's death was communicated to him at 'the county headquarters. "He was a loyal official who rose from humble beginnings to high station in the government of this borough," Mr. Kelly said.

"He served also ior years as the leader of the 10th Assembly District. His among the older generation will mis3 him." Mr. Carey became Borough President Dec. 13, 1933, when Mr. Hesterberg was appointed a member of the Board of Water Supply.

Mr. Carey remained in that office until the late Borough President Ingersoll took office on Jan. 1, 1934. He later became Deputy Clerk of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. In Politics 30 Years During his long political career In Brooklyn, which covered a period of more than 30 years, Mr.

Carey had held a number of important posts in this borough. He was chosen as Transfer Tax Appraiser under State Commissioner Gilchrist In 1913 and previously had been in charge of all asphalt repair work In this borough. In 1925 he was appointed Superintendent of Public Buildings. He was named Superintendent of Bewers in 1926 and in 1930 was ap-k pointed as Commissioner of Public Works. It was in this position that he succeeded Hesterberg.
