Williams, a veteran of World 1 and a well-known insurance man, was among the first five men selected to repre sent the X.C.C.S. at U. S. centers din ing the early days of World War II. He was a mem ber of the American Legion and the Catholic War Veterans.

The blast, which sounded like the heavy rumbling of a munitions explosion and shook buildings over a wide area, came shortly after 2 p.m. Two ol the injured are in critical condition at Norwegian Hospital.

The main building of the company, which normally supplies gas to I.Vj.000 residents in Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Bath Beach and part of was a mass of debris, but the customers continued to get their gas supplies as usual. These came from the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, as well as from still undamaged tanks of the Kings County Lighting Company on 63th between 8th and 9th Aves. Ralph E. Titus, vice presi dent of the Kings County firm, said today: "We have been manufacturing gas since o'clock this morning. There is no change in our service, and our customers have not iif-fered." The dead were Kdward Hehir.

The explosion occurred three hours after gas production in, ihe main building, a brick: structure, had been shut ofl to permit installation of a new meter on the first floor. The meter was to be ued to reenter the amount of gas transmitted to storage tanks.

Knudsen, Ex-GM Head, Dies Continued from Page 1 tor Company in 1911 and Mr. Knudsen's driving energies soon raised him to command of Ford's 27 plants. Mr. Knudsen broke with Ford in 1919 and became General Motors Corporation consultant. His genius chiefly was responsible for Chevrolet's late dominance in the light car field.

Knudsen became president of G. M. in 1937 when Alfred P. Sloan moved up to chairmanship of the board, and served four years. President Roosevelt named him director of the office of production management Jan.

7, 1911, but the job lasted only 11 month's because of mounting criticism. The President commissioned Mr. Knudsen as a lieutenant general in charge of war production for the army and he worked long hours and traveled more than 250,000 miles to break production bottlenecks.
