The blast, which sounded like the heavy rumbling of a munitions explosion and shook buildings over a wide area, came shortly after 2 p.m. Two of the injured are in critical condition at Norwegian Hospital. The main building of the company, which normally supplies gas to 155.000 residents in Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Bath Beach and part of Flatbush, was a mass of debris, but the customers continued to get their gas supplies as usual. These came from the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, as well as from still undamaged tanks of the Kings County Lighting Company on 65th between 8th and 9th Aves.

Ralph E. Titus, vice president of the Kings County firm, said today: "We have been manufacturing gas since o'clock this morning. There no change in our service, and our customers have not suffered." The dead were Edward Hehir. 28, a watchman, of 515 59th and Michael Gillen, 46, pipefitter's helper, of 668 79th St. Critically' injured and under treatment in Norwegian Hospital were Patrick, Kelleher, 40, paint foreman, 10 Monroe and John Costello.
