HA1I, AND KAREWFJ.I,: NBC-TV's "The Doctor." which premiered last Sunday at 10 p.m., was related to the medical profession in name only. It's true that the opening scene was a doctor's office, and what could have passed for a patient was seated at his desk. Now, if you will keep in mind that this is television. 1952, perhaps it will help you to understand what follows. The doctor is a doctor sure enough, but the patient is a sort of political refugee from.

Czechoslovakia with a yen to help out mentally-afflicted children in the doctor's small private clinic. Her qualifications? Well, as a matter of fact, this secret is so well kept that neither you. nor. I. nor the doctor ever does learn what they are, but in the end, she gets th job.

The doctor, played by Brooklyn-born Warner Ander- ton, is not exactly a fool, however, and he does ask his applicant at th outset hy she believes she can help his small patients. Perhaps he should have kept his mouth shut, because, like many women, she proceeds to tell him the tory of her life. As she does, the scene shifts from the doctor'i office, to the office of the Public Prosecutor, Dis-: trk-t Seven, in Communist-dominated Prague. The Public Frosecutor fellow is her husband. Life in Prague, for a Public Prosecutor and his wife, she explains to th doctor, is no bowl of cherries.

Seems that i when the P. P. does not send off enough innocent Czechs to the Commy slave camps, Colonel lllich, or someone, be- comes annoyed and makes life miserable for the official so remiss. He, in turn, can do one of two things: Hit the bottle or his wife. Her husband, she informs the doctor, did both.

But he only did so because he had a CONSCIENCE. He loved all Czechs, and especially his wife. Finally, he evolves a plan whereby he can, 1: Get even with the nasty Communists, and, 2: Get his wife safely out of the country. Actually, the story was an interesting one, and it was exceptionally well played by a very capable cast. I don't think that because the title was 100 percent misleading as to dramatic content, or because the feminine lead changed her accent for unaccountable reasons, I should criticize it.

No sir, the doctor helped me lately, so why should I say anything against "The Doctor" (NBC-TV, Sunday, 10 p.m.) FAREWELL "The Masquerade Party" threw iu last gala Monday on NBC-TV and I shall miss it. The: panel, consisting of Peter Donald, Ilka Chase, John S. Young and Madge Evans, was a charming, alert and pleasant group. Emcee Bud Collyer kept the festivities rolling nicely, and as he said, if you want this one back, write to NBC and sav so. You're the.
