Walter t'ronktie, I was informed, had leen handed the pfuin of lncxleratinn these discussion sessions as a reward for so capably carrying out his assignments as a newscaster and commentator during the telecasting of the recently concluded national political conventions. Mr. Cronkite's abilities as a moderator were fairly well hidden on the! initial performance of "Pick the Winner." He intro-' tiuced Senator A. S. Mike Monroney, chief of the Speakers' Hureau of the Democratic National Committee, and Cov.

Sherman Adams of New Hampshire, Gen. Dwight D. Kisen-'hower's. "Chief of Staff." and proceeded to permit these two gentlemen to how and scrape before one another for the next 30 minutes. Frankly, I was terribly disappointed.

Any youngster knows that there are issues in the national campaign now -muter way that are ilally important to all Americans. 'Certainly (iovernor Adams and Senator Monroney know what these Issues are, and are well qualified to debate them. Instead of doing so, the Senator and Governor srenird to go out'of their way to agree with one another on all counts, and as far as 1 was concerned, I felt like looking around for a third national party. To my way of thinking a TV moderator's job is not "that of a at a fraternal dinner. He can't afford to permit his guests to engage in social amenities to the point where interest In what they have to say lags.

But he can, and should, by judiciously poking and prodding his guests, awaken a tremendous interest in his viewers. No moderator is earning his keep when his duty toward his viewers become secondary. lm fully aware that the political stature of Senator Monnoney and Governor Adams is considerable. I also know that politics makes strange bedfellows. But gosh, no moderator should permit his guests to become THAT chummy.

And right in front of all those people, too! The basic idea behind, "Pick the Winner" is to get out tht -vote this Fall. A good idea, but unless subsequent sessions are more controversial, methinks a large proportion of the viewers will remain at home come Election Day. 'Starring the Kditors," WABD, Wednesdays, p.m., continues in its interesting way to present the news-, paper editors' views on current events. What I especially like about this program is the able way in which Erwin D. Canham, editor of the Christian Science Monitor, handles his -chores as moderator.

Sir. Canham never hesitates to take issue with any of hi -panelists when he finds their idea to be at variance with his. This occur quite frequently and never fails 1o arouse an awareness In the viewer that he Is not merely a viewer, hut part of the show, Mr. Canham has that un- knack of asking question that the viewers would 'I Jikfc itf'ask the panelists if they could. III VABD "Quick on the Draw" had its y.

liveliest session in its merry, young life last Tuesday, p.m., when disc jockeys Ted Brown, Bill Silbert, Don -RivsseSl- and Bea Kalmus literally astounded hostess Robin and cartoonist-host Bob Dunn with their erudi-'tion. The deejays were sharp as phonograph needles, and Xfor rojj money, they should comprise the panel on this a permanent basis. Celeste Holm, who so fetcJilnKly. subbed for the vacationing Arthur Godfrey on "Godfrey and Friends" show, narrowly escaped i ill-owning at Point Lookout, X. recently.
