former Controller of the City of New York and for many years one of the first citizens of Brooklyn, left a gross estate of $927.247.81 reduced by debts to a net $493,342.16, it was disclosed in a transfer tax appraisal filed yesterday in Surrogate's Court, Manhattan. Mr. Metz died in New Rochelle, N. on May 17, 1934. Debts listed included notes totaling $82.242 due the State Banking Department in connection with the liquidation of the Bank of United States.

Mr. Metz was a director of the bank. A stockholders' assessment of $4,225 also was included. Among the other debts were $69,756.62 to H. A.

Metz $65.168.82 to the Empire Trust Company on a promissory to Eugene Widman on a promissory note, $36,130.54 to the Consolidated Color Chemical Company and $30,482.63 to the Bank of Manhat- tan Trust Company, $5,000,000 Suit Listed Listed as a contingent liability was an action for $5.000,000 brought by the State Superintendent of Insurance against Mr. Metz and other directors of the Geenral Surety Company. The suit is now being contested. Securities aggregat.ng $559.429 and mortgages, notes, cash and taxable insurance totaling $249,631 comprised the bulk of the gross estate. Among the security holdings were 2,000 shares of Consolidated Color Chemical Company, worth 369 shares of Advance Solvents Chemical Corporation, valued at 1,560 shares of American I.

G. Chemical Company, worth $50,700, together with $51.547 in the company's, bonds; valued 2,500 at shares of 805 shares of New York Hanseatic Company, worth 563 shares of Sterling Products, worth $32,372, and 500 shares of Seaman Brothers, valued at $22,750. A fund of $170.300 set up for Mr. Metz' four sons was not included in taxable assets. Listed among the transfers was an $80,740 fund, representing securities in a German firm, created in 1930 for Laura A.

K. Metz, a former wife. The income from the net estate goes to the widow, Mrs. Alice M. Metz of 38 W.

Smart Niece to Inherit $38,000 Estate Of Ellen Ryder Mrs. Rose Bernstein Will Gives $30.500 to Her Sons and Daughters Ellen Ryder, who died Jan. 3 at her home, 1878 Coney Island left her entire estate of not more than $38.000 personal property to her niece, Maria Voorhees of the same address, according to the will filed today with Surrogate George Albert Wingate. The will of Mrs. Rose Bernstein of 1723 48th who died Dec.

28 in the Manhattan General Hospital, disposed of an estate of $500 real and not more than $30,000 personal property. She left her home and jewelry, as well as 30 percent of the residuary estate, to two daughters, Aida Kalmanson of 8635 14th Ave. and Dorothy Bernstein the 48th St. address. Smart, retired Standard Oil Company of New York executive, who had been in charge of the company's plants in Brooklyn and Long Island City for a number of years, were to be held here this afternoon at 2:30 in the T. Davis Memorial Home. Mr. Smart died here yesterday at his home, 34 Beechmont Drive.

He was 70. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Aimee M. Smart; a daughter, Mrs. Frank Roos; two sisters, Mrs.

Phillips and Mrs. J. F. Harris, and a brother, Gerald H. Smart.

Resided in Brooklyn After being in charge of the Pratt Works of the Standard Oil Company in New York for 20 years, Mr. Smart was transferred in 1915 to the Kings County Oil Works as superintendent. Laters he placed in charge of Sone Flemwand ing Works of the Standard Oil Company, Brooklyn, leaving in 1919 to become general manager of manufacturing at 26 Broadway, Manhattan. While serving in the Brooklyn area his home was at 389 Lafayette Ave. Smart was born in Hampton County, South Carolina, and started his career with the Standard Oil Company in 1890.

At one time he was superintendent of plants in Parkersburg, W. Va. For about five years he was chairman of the manufacturing committee of the company. He retired in 1930. Rev.

Dr. D. S. Colt Dies in Baltimore Special to The Eagle Baltimore, Jan. 15-The Rev.

Dr. Don S. Colt, formerly pastor of the old Sumner Avenue M. E. Church in Brooklyn, N.

died here yesterday at the age of 75.0 Dr. Colt -went to the Brooklyn church in April, 1909. from the First M. E. Church at Rochester, N.

Y. He succeeded the Rev. Dr. Gardner S. Eldridge, who accepted a call to the Rochester church.

For some 50 years Dr. Colt served in the Methodist ministry. He was an ardent prohibitionist and frequently spoke on the evils of liquor. A native of Wisconsin, he WAS graduated from Baker University in Kansas. He was admitted to the Kansas Conference of Methodist Episcopal Church 1886.

then Later he was a member of the St. Louis, Southwest Kansas. Pittsburgh and Tennessee Conferences. Dr. Colt held pastorates here from 1901 to 1905, returning in 1911, and was made superintendent of the Baltimore district of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1918.

He retired last year. Surviving are his widow, to whom he was married more than 50 years; two sons. Don E. and John M. Colt, and a daughter, Mrs.

He was born in Washington, N. and lived in Brooklyn for 50 years. He retired in 1924 after 29 years' service. Surviving are his widow. Louise J.

Peyton; a son, Dr. T. Roy Peyton. Harlem physician; a daughet. Mrs.

Mildred Peyton Dodson. art teacher in P. S. 29. and a sister.

Dr. Emory died here yesterday at his home, 1 Franklin Place. He was 57. Surviving widow, Mrs. May Mercer Emory; three sons, George Theodore M.

and Thomas M. Emory: a daughter, Miss Josephine Emory, and a brother, Percy F. Emory. Born in Syracuse, he was a graduate of Harvard and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. He came here following the World War and became a member of the Morristown General Hospital staff.

William B. Lester dentist, of 1405 E. 15th who had practiced for the last 37 years at 15 Park Row, Manhattan, died yesterday of heart disease at his home after a brief illness. Dr. Lester was born in Tennessee and lived in Brooklyn for years.

He was a graduate of the New York College of Dental and Oral Surgery and taught at the college for several years after his graduation. He was a member of the 1st District Dental Society, the American Dental Association and of the Royal Arcanum. Surviving are his widow, Edith S. Lester, and a son, William Braeme Lester former Manual Training High School athlete, who is now division flight superintendent of the American Air Lines at Chicago. Services will be held at 8 p.m.

He was head of the Amsov Artists Bureau of New York, An organization through which all contracts were placed by Gomez, entertainment syndicate of the viet Union. Mr. 'Basy's job was to furnish the Soviet stage with American artists, especially pantomimists and clowns whose specialty was so-called "dumb" acts which Russiens could understand without the aid of lan.

Mr. Basy went to Russia to in arranging the Ameri. can acts and was reputed to be the only American made a full member of the Russian organization's staff. He also sent many popular American musical groups to Russia and was said to be responsible for in. troducing American jazz in that country.

Two years ago he booked Cleveland Orpheus Choir for a Russian tour.
