BEST GOLDEN VEIN. Bowie, Md Nov. 13 Golden Vein looks like the worthwhile wager of Bowie's card on Monday. He combines all the essentials speed, staying qualities and mud-running ability. It's likely the track will be heavy, for it wrs thoroughly soaked for 12 hours Friday night.

His keenest opponent in ths seventh is Braving Danger. Stocks is another that on recent form promises to make his admirers happy by winning the Eden Handicap, one mile and a sixteenth, the feature of the card. Stocks, however, will not be able to make any mis'takes. If he does, Teddy Haslam and High Velocity are likely to beat him. Dark Beau has been racing agalast better company than he meet in the sixth.

In addition he drops oft weight. He has White Sand to beat to land the money. Star Porter moves up many pounds in soft footing. That gives him a royal chance to land the fourth. Cycle's last racevfor him was very poor.

He has dropped several thousand dollar in value since Spring. Nevertheless he may beat Acautaw, a noted mudder, for the place. On the Dot looks like the best in the first; Venetian, a good soft-track runner, is fancied for the second, and Jolly Jack looks best on figures for the third. Successful Jockeys To Get Gold Watches Jockeys in the Bowie meeting, the Eastern racing finale, will have added Inducements in two gold watches offered by General Manager Joe Boyle of Bowie. And Merry Lassie is all that a Hashing, dashing, sparkling, whimsical equine miss whose toes fairly twinkle as she skims over the dirt traok and whose heels sound a rat-a-tat-tat to her rivals.

Merry La.ssie Is the leading winning Juvenile miss of the year seven victories out of nine starts, one second, one third, for approximately $28,000. THE FLIRTS OF THE TURF In all probability It would have a cl Deen a clean score for the bay filly, 2, by Stimulus Iseult, If the current of life had run along smoothly with racing conditions. In one race at Saratoga, her first defeat, she was knocked about during the running and finished third. Then Ogden Mills, her part owner, died, and that changed the campaign mapped out for her and helped in part to bring about her final defeat at the Empire City track. Merry Lassie was eligible to start for the Selima Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, during the Laurel meeting, a test of one mile.

That's some route for the flirts of the turf, because of their temperamental moods. They like to wriggle and all but dance, flick their tails and be on their merry way kicking up their heels. Merry Lassie was sent down to Laurel from Aqueduct, L. I. The weather at the time was none too good rain and more rain.

And the track became soggy. It was a case of must for Sunny Jim Fitzsim-mons, her trainer, and Tom Drlscoll, his able asistant. Time pressed, for there was only a short time to get ready to fashion and tighten her muscles so that she could go a route. A LOSS TO THE Tl'RF OGDEN MILLS That work in all probability robbed her of her flashing speed. But it had to be.

There was no dodging the Issue. And then when the fill's muscles were tightened up in preparation for the struggle the grim reaper came along. Ogden Mills, an able man, of charming personality, who had a deep and lasting affection for a thoroughbred, went the way of all flesh. The death of Mr. Mills interrupted, caused a bad break in the mapped out campaign of the Wheatley Stable race horse.

It was so sudden that for a time the routine of the string was like a broken thread. And then when the transfer was made so that the horses wdtld race in the name of Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons. their trainer, this for the period of mourning, it sort of knocked a hole into the training operations. It was during that period that Merry Lassie had one more stake event to go, this at Empire City. It was the short six furlongs, a sprinting distance that was Just to her fancy.

It measured well with her hiRh flight of speed. But that period of training for the Selima Stakes, at one mile through heavy-mud, her shipment back to New York and the layoff during the period of the sudde ndeath of Mr. Mills, left a ehavy mark, so to speak, on the speed of the daughter of Stimulus. And as a result Miyako, the gray filly that had been a rival but never a menace to Merry Lassie, beat her home In the final stages of the race. What is the future for Merry Lassie? Will she go on and will stake events in '38? Will she go a route? Who can say? Merry Lassie wasn't born with that high flight of speed.

She had It, of course, but it was hidden away. It had to be brought out through process of training and developing. As Sunny Jim and Tom nriscoll explained to the writer, she snoed no high flight of speed as a nnH wig iiixt nnp nf mnnv minus. J- in the big string of youngsters that had to be broken and trained. This season, Goshen, Columbus, Ohio, and Reading, presented the events. The Village Farm stake for two-vear-old pacers, sponsored by the breeding farm of the same name at Langhorne, boasts 54 entries, while the three-year-old division of the same stake lists 24 candidates, a gain of four over last year. The petitioners asked that the stream be closed in the interest of the promotion of sport fishing.

There is a general movement for the conservation of salmon, striped bass and other species along the Maine coast. Last Spring Commis sioner Feyler closed the Denny i River, and the Leg ature closed the Penobscot to commercial fishing ot salmon. The commissioner also closed the Mousam and Kennebunk rivers to bass fishing except with hook and line. Furthermore, according to Feyler, there is now some talk of closing the Kennebec River to seining of bass and placing a bag limit on these fish in the Penobscot. Commissioner Feyler declared that he he was entirely in sympathy with the movement to promote sport fishing when It did not seriously interfere with the commercial fishery, Commending the services rendered bv District Forest Ranger Elmer Cole of Northville, Commissioner Commissioner Lithgow Osborne of the New York Conservation Department, drew attention to the fact that Forest Rangers are often called upon to erform other than official duties.
