Former President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers of America has declared himself out of the running for political office. It was recently assertad that he would be a Democratic candidate for Governor of Illinois, and some of his friends urged that he would be a fit running mate for the Presidential output of the Denver convention, but he himself says: "I am not now, and shall not be. a candidate for any political office whatsoever." It is thought, however, that Mr.

Mitchell may accept a posiiion in the National Civic Federation's trades agreement department. Carpenters Aggressive Campaign. A joint committee was recently appointed by Local Unions Nos. 32, 3UJ and 4T6, United Botherhood of Carpen- frame coal bin wood shed. lux42.

the Church of the Redeemer says, among other things, respecting the labor problem: The labor question was brought before our diocesan convention In a communication from a labor union, which was listened to with attention and accorded respeclful consideration. The church showed herself in keen sympathy with the worklngnian and fully alive to the grave issues involved. Indeed, it would be difficult for the church to lurn her back on labor. The Master of men chose the lot of a worklngman. St.

Paul belonged to labor's ranks and earned his livelihood as a tent-maker. We sometimes hear that the workingman is hostile to the church, but 1 doubt if a careful analysis would confirm the statement. The right of labor to organize be questioned and many of the aims of the union apiieai forcefully to all. The increased wage, the shorter working day, th 'improvement of shop conditions, the abolition of child labor are objects for which every one ought to raise his voice, and we of the church say heartily: "God prosper you," to men who are striving toward these things.

The church stands for brotherhood, which Is vertical, not horizontal, which knows no privileged class, which labors unselfishly tor the good of all. which guarantees freedom to each individual and justice to the humblest. The church has a splendid vantage ground as mediator in industrial disputes because of her position as the common meeting ground of capital and labor. Her large conception embraces every man within its sympathy, overleaping all distinctions. The recent decision of the Supreme Court places capital and labor on the same footing before the law.
