BROOKLYN Just Between Us Acquiring Summer Tan Slowly For Best and Safest Results EAGLE, MAY 20, 1952 WARMER day by topic of conversation is Who are you to be left every friend you have Acquiring For By NANCY MOTTRAM THE SUN'S GETTING day and already a big the seasonal suntan. behind, when almost snatches any available moment to go out and begin toasting herself? It's almost like a race to see who can start looking browner first, and even by the time regular Summer rolls around you intend to have a big head start. Nothing looks prettier with a cotton dress, clear makeup or the new fad for white jewelry than a tan. And nothing looks worse or is more uncomfortable than a lobNancy Mottram ster-red shade and a tight skin caused by too much enthusiasm in the sun. Some say that a definite sunburn is the forerunner of a wonderful tan, and if you want to count in discomfort, unattractive peeling skin and a burned look to turn a shade browner, they might be right.

But it's not the clever way to go about it and, above all, it's risking your health. There's a safer and saner method to go about getting that lovely, even color, so follow a tried and true method and you'll have results without regrets. DON'T TRY TO DO IT all at once. In the first place, you can't, Skin just doesn't work that way. And remember, you've spent the Winter and most of the Spring under wraps, so be careful of that complexion.

It's a big part of your prettiness- -don't tale chances with it. Stay out just 15 minutes the first few times, very gradually lengthening the time. And stock up on suntan oil to protect your skin from drying out. Keep in mind, too, that although small doses of sun may be good for your hair, such as drying it after a shampoo, a steady diet of heat isn't good for anything. And if you want to keep your crowning glory smooth and soft while toasting, wrap a towel around your head and for further safety, as you stay out longer, protect your eyes with cotton pads.

You'll be wearing several styles of Summer dresses, too, so keep in mind that bane of a beautiful tan, strap marks. Then, when you definitely show the transformation, pick summery makeup. Clear red lipstick accentuates your color and you won't need more than a dash of powder. And, for a real pickup, try a different cologne and maybe even a new hair style. Summer is a marvelous time to start looking and feeling prettier, and you'll be surprised and happy at the change--and the compliments it brings.
