EDVARD GRIEG Is one of the latent of the World's Great Composers to express his admiration and enthusiasm for The MeirosSylc Pianola WOMAN DEAD FROM GAS. With eight gas Jets turned on in her apartment, Holcka Bay Schmitt, 35 years old, a Swedish woman, was found dead yesterday afternoon at 16 West Sixty-fifth street, Manhattan. No motive for the woman committing suicide could be learned by the police and detectives are making a rigid investigation of the woman's death. "Oh, you would like a public muss," Roach replied, "would you." That much of the row was overheard. It is said that with the approach of pedestrians Roach and his friends jumped into their automobile and rode off.

Mr. Glegerieh is very indignant at the assault, which he admitted last night to an Eagle reporter. He would not say what the story was which Roach accused him of circulating. Mr. Roach has been subjected to criticism during the campaign In a Btory published in a local newspaper.

He replied to It by producing letters of recommendation which he claimed were given to him by the law Arm of Marshall, In Manhattan. It was claimed in the original story that Roach was hardly a competent candidate, and that he had been discharged in eDcember, 19)2, from employ-. mentis a telephone boy for cause, Lau'isl'Marshall, the well known corporation lawyer, who Is a member of the firm, replied in a public statement in which he said that no responsible member of the Arm had ever, written the alleged letters of recommendation for Roach. Ihe following letter, received by the Aeolian Company from the great Norwegian composer, has been pronounced the most important tribute ever paid by a musician to a musical instrument: BERGEN, NORWAY.

July 28, 1904. I have heard the Metrostyle Pianola and consider it most admirable and interesting. Before hearing the Metrostyle I had thought that all such instruments were only machines, but it is indeed surprising what can be done with the Metrostyle in reproducing Musical works in the way of giving the intentions of the composer. that the latter had never been a manager of the office, but had only been in charge of the telephone switchboard In the office at a salary of J14 a week. The firm is one which is counsel for many Targe stoek brokers, and soon afterward Roach entered the employ of Ennis and Stoppanl, with whom he is now connected. An effort was made to find out what the complaint Is that, seems to be causing so much annoyance to Mr. Roach, and which is said to have caused the misunderstanding. Mr.

Marshall was asked by reporter to explain. "I have already made a statement," he said, "and I think the people of Brooklyn will know from It that Mr. Roach is hardly the representative they want. The facts are as I have stated. He wsb never a manager In our office as I understand he claims, but only in charge of our telephones.

In his five or six years employment here I never saw him a half dozen times because he was in a booth. If at any time there is a necessity for me to speak more plainly I will tell what I know about him on the witness stand." Mr. Roach Is running against George E. Waldo, and is said to have been rather apprehensive that Mr. Waldo would circulate the newspaper story.

He has been reassured on that point, Mr. Waldo, having told him that no person.) Iltleo would be countenanced by him. That occurred some time ago. Mr. Roach is popular in Manhattan, along Broadway, and Brooklyn, and in Brooklyn, where lively young cjan congregate.

He is said to h.ive made a fortune with Ennis Stoppanl in the last two years. That is the most that is known about Mr. Roach, who has been making a personal rather than a speaking canvasrc. $3.00 Shoes for Women at $2.25 Perhaps you know the 'high character of the Saks three dollar shoes. Grieg's interest in the Pianola and his approval of its artistic qualities did not end with the writing of this letter. He has also "specially interpreted for the Metrostyle his best-known piano-forte5 works, thus evidencing by his cooperation with the manufacturers of the Pianola, the absolute sincerity of his convictions as expressed in writing. American impresarios have in vain held out substantial inducements to Dr. Grieg to visit this country and give a series of concerts. Even in Europe his appearances in concert are exceedingly rare, and then usually as an orchestral conductor only.

Owing to his advanced age and ill-health there is little likelihood of Dr. Grieg ever visiting the United States. He has, however, recognized his American admirers by metrostyling for the Pianola his representative works. To lovers of Grieg, in this country at least, the Metrostyle is the sole means 0 learning the exact manner in which the master intends his compositions to be rendered. The Pianola has in the Metrostyle an exclusive feature which is not even approximated in any other form of Piano Player.
